Project: Come and join us in the heart of Lyon Metropole to take part in the project promoting intercultural exchanges and the development of social bonds in a working-class neighbourhood!
After the first workcamp accomplished in 2018 in partnership with East Metropole Habitat, a social landlord in the agglomeration of Lyon, a new project is launched in 2019 in Vaulx-en-Velin. After the first edition in Amsterdam in 2017, the International Social Housing Festival will be held in France, in Lyon, from the 4th to 8th June 2019. This year there are three main topics for the exchanges: “A planet for tomorrow, a city for all, a house for everyone”. It is in this context that you will organise a great Neighbours’ Day that will bring together everyone in a friendly atmosphere for cultural entertainment and games. You will also be encouraged to promote exchanges with residents around the issue of housing to make the connection with the festival.
Work: project aims to promote cultural intermixing in a disadvantaged neighborhood of the city. It aims to reinforce social ties between different publics. You will be working with the residents and the involved associations of the neighbourhood in order to propose the activities and organise the closing of the festival.
Accommodation and food: You will be hosted individually in rooms of the student residence in Vaulx-en-Velin. This accommodation is provided by East Metropole Habitat and offers you all the facilities (toilets, showers…). Don’t forget to bring bedclothes AND (!) a sleeping bag.
The group will be accompanied by two camp leaders, one group leader and one technical leader. Together you will participate in the organization of collective life (cleaning, activities, etc.), you will prepare meals in turns using the products bought nearby. We will favour local products and short supply circuits. Tastings of local specialties may also be organised with local producers.
Location and leisure activities: The town of Vaulx-en-Velin is one of the 59 towns that make up the Lyon Metropole. With more than 50 000 residents, it’s the 4th largest town of the agglomeration. It is located in the east of Lyon and has all the amenities related to life in urban area. It is connected with Lyon by tram and offers a dense and varied transport network (buses, bicycle lanes…).
The town of Vaulx-en-Velin is made up of many working-class districts, each of them has its own history and specificities. It is located near the Grand Park Miribel Jonage. Residents of Lyon truly appreciate this natural area with a lot of possibilities for walking and swimming.
The workcamp will be from 22nd May to 12th June 2019. You will be able to take part in activities during the festival that will be held from 4th to 8th June 2019. During this event for 2 or 3 nights you will be accommodated in the tents (the other nights you will sleep in the student residence). Don’t forget to bring a sleeping bag. The tents and floor mats will be provided by Concordia.
A lot of cultural and leisure activities will be possible around town and the whole agglomeration. You can also visit Lyon, world capital of gastronomy, whose historical centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Special requirements and remarks: This project takes place in the middle of a very tourist metropolis. You will move by using different modes of transport, including cycling. In addition, basic knowledge of French is recommended for being able to communicate with local people.
