Restaure un ancien couvent - Restore an old convent

The Convent of the Annonciades Célestes was purchased by heritage enthusiasts who are dedicated to restoring it and bringing it back to life. Since 2022, they have been hosting volunteer projects. Beyond the restoration work, the goal of the project for the locals is to introduce volunteers to the treasures of local heritage and French gastronomy, while sharing their love for beauty and their town. The work at the Convent focuses on various stone structures that are in great need of care, as some are at risk of collapsing, endangering the building and its gardens. This year, the project will involve dismantling and rebuilding an exterior garden wall that is threatening to collapse, disrupting the aesthetic harmony of the renovated site, as well as repairing the lime plaster in the kitchen, which protects the stones from water infiltration. With the guidance of a traditional masonry professional, volunteers will learn to prepare lime mortar, dismantle and reassemble stones, and apply plasters, joints, and coverings while respecting traditional techniques. Be prepared for occasionally physical work. Some tasks will take place at height. During periods of intense heat, work will be limited to mornings.

It is also supported by a local association that works year-round on restoration projects to advance the renovations as much as possible and prepare for summer events!

Work

The aim of this project is both to improve the quality of the residents' stay in the centre and to encourage exchanges between volunteers and residents, but also between residents. The residents are not a homogeneous group: they have different ages, nationalities, religions, lifestyles and life stories; there are sometimes major cultural differences between them. The volunteers will contribute to improving the quality of the residents' stay, on the one hand, by participating in manual work, maintenance, painting, tidying up and gardening which will improve the living environment and, on the other hand, by proposing and participating in activities with the residents (sports, crafts, games, theme evenings, culinary activities, etc.), particularly with the children. As the project takes place during the school holidays, the children will indeed be present at the centre.

Partner

The Fedasil reception centre for asylum-seekers of Sugny hosts people who have applied for asylum in Belgium. They have fled situations of war, persecution, discrimination or environmental disasters and hope, with this application, to get a refugee status that will allow them to reside legally in the country. Before being able to settle in Belgium and build their future there, they must therefore wait for their refugee status to be proven and granted through a long administrative process. During this time, they are hosted in this centre. Always waiting, the residents of the centre live in uncertainty about the future and are sometimes subject to significant stress. Individual situations are multiple and complex, but never easy. Life at the Fedasil centre of Rixensart reflects these individual dramas and the hopes of the residents. More information: https://www.facebook.com/FedasilSugny/?locale=fr_FR

Location

The Fedasil centre of Sugny is located in the Ardennes region, in the south of Belgium, close to the French border. The centre is very isolated; the region is sparsely populated and the nearest villages are 2 and 5 km away. It is surrounded by fields and woods; this site will therefore appeal to nature lovers. In addition, the centre has several sports fields and volunteers will have more than enough opportunities to enjoy leisure time and meetings with the residents. On the first evening, a drink or a dance evening will be organised, in order to welcome the volunteers and get to know the residents. During the weekend, depending on what you decide, it will be possible to organise cultural visits and travel to the largest Belgian cities.

Accomodation

The volunteers will be accommodated at the centre, in a common room or in rooms of 4, with all amenities (showers, toilets, etc.). They will share the same living conditions as the residents, which are very basic. They will cook their own meals at set times.

Requirements

Camp language is english, but some notions of French will be useful. And also you can find here a lot of people from all over the world, you can discover numerous other languages! Facial expression, sign language and emotional interjections may help you in any situation! Feel free! We warn the volunteers that the consumption of alcohol is strictly forbidden inside the centre. It is necessary be able to listen to others. This kind of workcamp is a very rich personal and human experience. It makes people aware of the complexity of certain social conditions related to the great inequalities on our planet. In order to demonstrate this, we ask the candidate volunteers: - to answer our specific questionnaire (if you do not have it yet, please ask it to your sending organization) - to send us a criminal record related to work with children

Meeting point

Saturday the 12th of July at Gedinne train station at 3.00pm.

Notes:

This project is a volunteering team, supported by the European Solidarity Corps program of the European Union. Compared to the usual workcamp participation scheme, some main financial and administrative differences must be underlined:  The participation to the ESC volunteering teams is subjects to several principles and conditions, presented on the ESC webpage: https://europa.eu/youth/solidarity/mission_en  The volunteers do not have to pay any fee (not sending, nor participation fee) to attend the project  The volunteers will receive pocket money, calculated on basis of 5€/day, once they arrive on the project in Belgium  The volunteers will receive a financial support for their travel, according to a maximum amount established in accordance with their travel distance  The volunteers need to register on the European Solidarity Corps Portal; CBB will organize their matching, on the online system, with the volunteering project  The volunteers will have to complete a participation report, submitted online by the ESC portal

Bring nature back to Nellschütz

Code:IBG 07

Where:Nellschütz

Number of volunteers:12

Language:English

Extra-Fee:0

Age:18+

13/07/2025 - 26/07/2025

Work

Bring nature back to an old gravel mine! You will support the transformation of an abandoned gravel pit into an ecologically valuable habitat and thus give back to nature what humans have taken from it. The Nellschütz gravel company is creating a habitat with a pond, deadwood, rocks and steep slopes on an area of 4 hectares, providing a new habitat for amphibians, insects and various plants. All these tasks are done in close cooperation with the local authorities for nature protection. The site will also be used for environmental education work with children and young people in the future. Specific tasks will include the construction of a circular path and a green classroom, the creation of a pond, deadwood areas, etc. You will be digging, straightening, planting, sawing and nailing. There will be a wide variety of work with different levels of difficulty. If necessary, workers from the gravel company will support you with heavy machines. A landscape gardener will provide professional guidance.

Partner

With your commitment, you will make an important contribution to the biodiversity and the transformation of former industrial brownfield sites. There are many places in the area south-west of Leipzig where gravel is extracted. This is done in open-cast mining. As soon as a site is exhausted, large desolate-looking holes are left in the landscape. In cooperation with the local nature conservation authorities and the Nellschütz gravel company, we will support the revitalisation of such a gravel pit with this volunteering project. Many people in the region are looking forward to this renaturation and to you. They will support you at work, in your free time, with food etc. and they are looking forward to meeting you. The site will also be used for environmental education by school classes and kindergartens, so a circular route through the site and an outdoor classroom will be build.

Location

Nellschütz is located in the south-west of Leipzig. The nearest larger town is Weißenfels, the meeting point on arrival. Weißenfels is worth a visit, there is a historic old town with various baroque-style buildings, a castle, but also nice shops, bars and cafés... but also many lost places due to the structural change in the region. We will try to offer various excursions. Due to the poor public transport most activities and excursions will be realised with the support of locals. They are already exited in showing you their highlights of the region.

Accomodation

The living conditions will be very basic and sustainable. You will live right next to the gravel pit, about 1km away from the small hamlet of Nellschütz. Specifically, there will be several sleeping tents with camping beds and a pavilion with tables and benches as a common room. Cooking will take place in an improvised outdoor kitchen on an open fire. Instead of a fridge, there will be a dug-out earth cellar. There is a compost toilet and solar showers. Of course there is no wifi. You can also use the showers in the public swimming pool from time to time or swim in the lake. Please bring your sleeping bag. Your group of volunteers will be responsible for grocery shopping and cooking together. The food will be bought with the camp budget and everybody will take turns for cooking, washing the dishes and cleaning. In order to reduce our carbon footprint on the planet, we encourage volunteers to reduce meat and try more sustainable dishes.

Requirements

The project is only suitable for people who are comfortable with living and working in the simplest of conditions and want to try out this way of living for a fortnight without too many comforts.

Meeting point

Meeting point will be at Weißenfels train station. Here you will be picked up by your campleaders. We will arrange several pick-up times in the afternoon and early evening. Please arrange your journey in a way that you arrive between 3 pm and 9 pm in Weißenfels. You can check for connections from anywhere to on: www.bahn.com/en.

Work

The commune of Aillon-le-Jeune offers a discreet but remarkable heritage, including the Chapelle de la Correrie and a cemetery cross dating back to the 13th century. Unfortunately, this precious heritage today suffers from a lack of emphasis: the surrounding wall that protects them is in ruins. 127919; Your mission: to bring it back to life and preserve this place full of history To do this, you ll work five hours a day, every morning from Monday to Friday. The afternoons will be devoted to group activities. 128736;65039; The work to be carried outThe wall extends over 65 metres, but the work will concentrate on the first 15 metres, which are the most fragile and pose a direct threat to neighbouring tombs. Supervised by specialists - including a former wall-climber - you will learn step-by-step the traditional techniques of dry stone masonry. From dismantling the wall to selecting the stones and levelling the ground, each step will immerse you in the rigour and beauty of this age-old technique. You ll then take part in the painstaking reconstruction of the wall, stone by stone, right up to the final fitting of the coverings... using exceptional materials and 129521;It s a great opportunity to combine learning, heritage and practical action in the service of the region, all in a relaxed, intercultural atmosphere
