The work will take place at Oosterhouw in Leens (province Groningen). It is a beautiful monumental manor house surrounded by a garden divided into four different styles. Many parts of these gardens have been neglected over the past decades. Volunteers will be cleaning up and helping restore the gardens to their former glory. Activities range from groundwork like digging and levelling to gardening such as weeding and pruning to wood shredding and splitting. The volunteers will work in the gardens five days a week. This excludes the weekends.
The mansion Oosterhouw in Leens is located in the north of the Netherlands in the province of Groningen. The estate is surrounded by a flat agricultural landscape approximately 10 km from the Wadden Sea UNESCO heritage. Oosterhouw was built in 1868. The last time the building was renovated was in 1912-1913. After that, there weren’t any significant developments. The former owners of the mansion were C.o Jellema and Klaas Noordhuis. Co. Jellema is a semi-known poet in the Netherlands, and his current library is still in the house. Klaas Noordhuis was a garden architect and has added essential aspects to the garden. The current owners bought the house a few years ago and want to open the house more to the public. The house, the garden and the surrounding landscape are unique in this area and must be protected and taken care of.
You will have leisure time after work (work ends at 4 p.m.). The Oosterhouw area mainly consists of small villages with Leens as the main village. You will have bikes at your disposal to explore the surrounding area. During the weekend you can enjoy your free time. There are plenty of nice places to visit, for example the beautiful and vibrant city of Groningen or take a ferry boat and visit the island of Schiermonnikoog.
During the two weeks, the volunteers will be staying at Wongema. It’s a working café located in the small village of Hornhuizen. The whole group will be staying in the residential barn besides the main building. There’s a dorm where everybody will be staying. Clean towels will be provided. Sheets for the beds won’t be provided. (Make sure you bring a sleeping bag or your own sheets!) Downstairs is a kitchen which we can use. Bicycles will be provided for transportation between the accommodation and the gardens of Oosterhouw. The bike ride from and to the accommodation is approximately 15 minutes. You will cook together in teams, taking turns and having the opportunity to cook meals from your home countries. You have a kitchen at your disposal. Self-organisation is also a vital point during your daily camp routines. Cooking and cleaning are planned and done independently within the group. Each participant is expected to take part in the CCC (cooking-cleaning-crew)
This project will be realised as an European Volunteering Teams (EVT) project. This means that the project is co-funded by the European Union through the European Solidarity Corps subsidy program. The project is eligible for people between 18 and 30 years who are legally residing in an EU member state, Iceland, Liechenstein, Republic of North Macedonia, Turkey or Norway and have registered in the European Solidarity Corps Portal. Volunteers travel costs will be compensated by this program and volunteers will receive €5,- pocketmoney per day. The conservation of the heritage railway and its steam trains requires proper maintenance. Foreseen activities are conservation of the nature and green environment along the railway trajectory, cleaning and painting railway bridges and maintenance of historic railway stations.
The Zuid-Limburgse Stoomtrein Maatschappij (South Limburg Steam Train Company) or ZLSM is a heritage railway operating from its main station of Simpelveld to Schin op Geul and Kerkrade in the south of the Netherlands. It also runs across the border from Simpelveld to Aachen-Vetschau and has an extensive collection of stock. The construction of the original Miljoenenlijn, as a part of the total railway trajectory in the south of Limburg, started in 1925 and was carried out by the Spoorwegbouwbedrijf from Utrecht, a subsidiary of the NS. Construction was difficult and expensive. For example, there is a constant threat of subsidence due to mining. To keep the height differences as small as possible, a lot of earth is moved in the hilly area. While the railway embankment in the Anselerbeek valley in Kerkrade will be raised 32 meters, the railway line between Kerkrade and Simpelveld will be 18 meters below ground level - so as not to have to rise and fall too much. To this day, the Miljoenenlijn is a railway monument of great cultural-historical value that still appeals to the imagination. For old and young! Everyone is always amazed.
Several options for leisure time: - Evening traveling by steam train, - Tribute to Fleedwood Mac, music festival (July 20th, 2024, Brunsum), - visit to summer market, - visit a very good restored castle Hoensbroek, - visit marl caves in Valkenburg, - disco party end fest at scouting area.
"The Scouting St. Lucia club building consists of 3 rooms of which 2 of them will used as bedrooms. We organize separate bedrooms for ladies and for men and we provide the rooms with field beds. If you bring your airbed, you can sleep comfortable. During the camp we will have to cook by ourselves. We have a kitchen of our own. Also a barbeque (camp fire pit) for use is available, located under a porch. The possibility of a barbecue can be arranged. All the food supply will be bought from the supermarket. The building also consist of a kitchen, two toilet rooms (with 3 toilets each) and a shower. Outside, we will install 3 extra showers with warm water. A washing machine is not available in the building. A WIFI network is available at the building. https://www.scoutingsimpelveld.nl/"

The project takes place in the refugee centre in Emmen which is a location for families with children. The children you will be working with are between 4 and 12 years. These children participate in a school program, but during the months of July and August, there is the summer holiday break. The volunteers organise activities for and with the children. This type of work calls for creative people who can make up all sorts of games from scratch to play with the children: music, sports, arts, language sessions, creativity, etc. Therefore the content of this project is up to you and the other participants. The games are scheduled throughout the week.
The location of the project is the Refugee Centre Emmen. Emmen is a city of about 60.000 inhabitants in the province of Drenthe in the northern part of the Netherlands. This refugee centre (in Dutch: ‘AZC Emmen’) has a capacity for about 400 refugees. This particular place is a location for families with under age children whose application for asylum has been denied by the Dutch government. These families will in time return to their homeland. Our partner is the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (in Dutch: COA). The COA provides accommodation during the asylum procedure and prepares asylum seekers for staying in the Netherlands, returning to their country of origin or transmigration. At the moment COA manages about 100 centres in the Netherlands. COA is an independent administrative body funded by the Dutch Ministry of Justice. The COA works together with a partner named ‘De Vrolijkheid’: the National Foundation for the Promotion of Happiness. The Happiness is a multicultural, not-for-profit network of artists, play writers, actors, musicians and volunteers who invest in children and teenagers in asylum-seeking centres. The Happiness organises creative activities on a regular basis in 30 asylum-seeking centres in the Netherlands. Please note that it is not allowed to take pictures and/or make videos in the refugee centre.
Of course there will be sufficient free time. Together with your camp leaders you will discuss the recreational program. Emmen is an attractive city with lots of activities in the summertime. You can visit places nearby and explore the surroundings. The area is declared a UNESCO-Geopark by the United Nations. Emmen is very well accessible by train and bus. Biggest attraction is the theme park Wildlands Adventure Zoo. Near the campingsite is also a earthwork from the Amercan artist Robert Smitson, Broken Circle and Spiral Hill(1971)
The accommodation will be in a tent. You can either bring your own tent or use on of ours. In that case you will share a tent with one other volunteer. It's necessary to bring your own sleeping bag and sleeping math. There are cooking facilities in a cooking tent and the group will cook for themselves. The centre will provide bikes for every volunteer to ride between the campsite and the Refugee Centre (including bike ride lessons). Volunteers will bring a packed lunch to the worksite.

This project will take place in cooperation with Emmaus Haarzuilens where the volunteers will live and work together with the residents of Emmaus. Because of the summer market, which will take place at the end of the project, this period of year will be extra busy for the Emmaus residents. The volunteers will help out where necessary, which can mean some days can be busier and others can be less so. The work will include picking up second hand goods together with the Emmaus residents, sorting them and placing them in the shop. Also, the volunteers will help with gardening and other maintenance work on the grounds of the community and help in the kitchen as well. At the end of the project the volunteers will help with the set-up and dismantling of the festival and they will also organize a fashion show in which they will present some of the second-hand clothes that are for sale.
Emmaus Communities around the world enable people to move on from homelessness, providing work and a home in a supportive, family environment. Companions, as residents are known, work full time collecting, renovating and reselling donated furniture. This work supports the community financially and enables residents to develop skills, rebuild their self-respect and help others in greater need. Companions receive accommodation, food, clothing and a small weekly allowance, but for many, the greatest benefit is a fresh start. To join a community, they sign off unemployment benefits and agree to participate in the life and work of the community and abide by its rules, for example not bringing drugs or alcohol into the community. Emmaus is a secular movement, spanning 36 countries. Our partner, Emmaus Haarzuilens, is a live/work community for former homeless people and others who strongly feel related to Emmaus ideology. Volunteers will not only work, but also live together with the inhabitants of Emmaus Haarzuilens. Living together also means preparing and eating meals together and do some cleaning and light house work. It also means that volunteers are expected to live by the rules of Emmaus Haarzuilens, for example not bringing alcohol and/or drugs into Emmaus communities.
Haarzuilens is a small village in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is part of the municipality of Utrecht, and is situated about 8 km west of Utrecht. The village of Haarzuilens is famous for De Haar Castle, which is surrounded by gardens. The nearby city of Utrecht is the fourth largest city of the Netherlands. Utrecht's ancient city centre features many buildings and structures from the Early Middle Ages. It has been the religious centre of the Netherlands since the eighth century. Until the Dutch Golden Age, Utrecht was the most important city of the Netherlands until Amsterdam became its cultural and most populous centre. Together with your camp leaders you will discuss the recreational program. For example, you can explore the beautiful historical city centre of Utrecht by bike, climb the Dom tower, go canoeing on the canals, visit a museum or other places in the Netherlands. Your camp leaders will have some ideas, but of course it is possible for the volunteers to put forward their own ideas for this program!
You will stay in a comfortable accommodation at the Emmaus terrain. -Beds and pillows are provided for, but you need to bring a sleeping bag. There is a common bedroom (so men and women combined). -You will cook and eat together with the residents of Emmaus. -The volunteers can make use of the (sanitary) facilities of the Emmaus building. -There is a separate shower and toilet available for the group. Towels and toiletries must be brought by the participants. -The participants can make use of the washing machine of the Emmaus group. -Wi-Fi is available in the building where the participants stay.
