Kpalimé, around 1h30 from Lomé, is a veritable jewel of nature. In south-west Togo, the region surrounding the town is both lush and fertile, lined with wooded hills, deep valleys and farming villages. Kpalimé is also the country's main craft centre, home to numerous artists and artisans: wood sculptors, batikeurs, potters, weavers and calabash makers. Nature walks and hikes allow you to discover the daily life of the inhabitants, who are mainly engaged in agriculture.
Housing conditions are simple and adapted to each project site. Volunteers are housed in rooms of three or four, with the mix depending on the organization of the groups. Depending on the location, dry toilets and waterless showers may be used. The association provides plastic or foam mats, and volunteers can bring their own sleeping bags if necessary. Drinking water is available on site, but access to electricity and the Internet may be limited due to power cuts and difficulties accessing the network. During the work, volunteers will prepare their own meals. An internal organization will distribute domestic tasks, including cooking, alternating between the groups. The food products used will be a mixture of local, imported and sometimes organic products. Each volunteer's diet will be considered when preparing meals. The work will take place at Oosterhouw in Leens (province Groningen). It is a beautiful monumental manor house surrounded by a garden divided into four different styles. Many parts of these gardens have been neglected over the past decades. Volunteers will be cleaning up and helping restore the gardens to their former glory. Activities range from groundwork like digging and levelling to gardening such as weeding and pruning to wood shredding and splitting. The volunteers will work in the gardens five days a week. This excludes the weekends. We will provide participants access to online training modules provided by the European Solidarity Corps and/ or SIW.
The mansion Oosterhouw in Leens is located in the north of the Netherlands in the province of Groningen. The estate is surrounded by a flat agricultural landscape approximately 10 km from the Wadden Sea UNESCO heritage. Oosterhouw was built in 1868. The last time the building was renovated was in 1912-1913. After that, there weren’t any significant developments. The former owners of the mansion were C.o Jellema and Klaas Noordhuis. Co. Jellema is a semi-known poet in the Netherlands, and his current library is still in the house. Klaas Noordhuis was a garden architect and has added essential aspects to the garden. The current owners bought the house a few years ago and want to open the house more to the public. The house, the garden and the surrounding landscape are unique in this area and must be protected and taken care of.
You will have leisure time after work (work ends at 4 p.m.). The Oosterhouw area mainly consists of small villages with Leens as the main village. You will have bikes at your disposal to explore the surrounding area. During the weekend you can enjoy your free time. There are plenty of nice places to visit, for example the beautiful and vibrant city of Groningen or take a ferry boat and visit the island of Schiermonnikoog.
During the two weeks, the volunteers will be staying at Camping "De Horizon" Molenrij near by Kloosterburen. The whole group will be staying in tents provided by SIW. There is also a large tent for group activities during freetime Two tiny houses are on the campground with all cooking facilities. Make sure you bring a sleeping matrass/mat and your own sheets! Bicycles will be provided for transportation between the accommodation and the gardens of Oosterhouw. The bike ride from and to the accommodation is approximately 15 minutes. You will cook together in teams, taking turns and having the opportunity to cook meals from your home countries. You have a kitchen at your disposal. Self-organisation is also a vital point during your daily camp routines. Cooking and cleaning are planned and done independently within the group. Each participant is expected to take part in the CCC (cooking-cleaning-crew).

Lohra Castle, with its centuries-old architecture and vast natural surroundings, is not only a site of historical significance but also a living, functioning place that requires continuous care and attention. This workcamp offers volunteers the opportunity to actively contribute to the sustainable management of the castle, ensuring that its grounds remain accessible, welcoming, and well preserved. While this workcamp does not involve hands-on heritage conservation interventions, it plays an equally essential role in the long-term care of the site, allowing future visitors and guests to experience and appreciate Lohra Castle as a harmoniously maintained historic and natural space. Beyond the practical tasks, the workcamp offers a unique and immersive experience. When the castle closes its doors to the public in the evenings, it becomes the volunteers' home, a place where they can experience the privilege of inhabiting a medieval site. In this way, they take on the role of stewards, caring for the space as if it were their own. The experience encourages a sense of responsibility, ownership, and connection to heritage, reinforcing the idea that heritage sites thrive not only through large-scale restoration projects but also through the daily care and attention given to them by those who value their existence.
The volunteers will engage in seasonal maintenance tasks, including mowing and collecting overgrown grass, clearing organic material from public areas, and ensuring that the castle’s open spaces remain well-kept. These tasks are crucial for the aesthetic and functional upkeep of the historic ensemble, preserving the visual integrity of the castle and its surroundings. The work also extends to the general maintenance of communal spaces and halls, contributing to the overall experience of visitors who use the castle for cultural events, educational programmes, and retreats. The income generated from these activities is directly reinvested into the castle’s conservation and educational projects, meaning that the work of volunteers directly supports heritage preservation efforts, even if not through conservation itself.
Despite its historical significance, Lohra Castle was abandoned for several decades, leading to neglect and structural deterioration. In the 1990s, the site was rediscovered and revitalised through the efforts of Open Houses, which has since used the castle as a base for heritage conservation, cultural initiatives, and international collaboration. Today, it serves as a centre for hands-on restoration projects organised by Open Houses ́ daughter organisation European Heritage Volunteers, as well as training courses organised by partner educational institutions, and volunteer-driven maintenance efforts such as this workcamp, welcoming participants from across the world to engage with its unique built heritage.
Lohra Castle, located in northern Thuringia, Germany, stands as one of the region’s most representative medieval fortifications located in the vicinity of important trade routes that connected the medieval world of central Europe. Though its present form is modest, the castle continues to command a striking position within the hilly landscape near a natural reserve. With a history spanning over a thousand years, the site reflects multiple layers of architectural evolution, shaped by shifting political, economic, and social contexts over the centuries. The architectural ensemble of Lohra Castle presents a rich assortment of historical styles, with elements dating back to the 11th century. Among its most remarkable features is a Romanesque double-floored chapel from the 12th century, an exceptional structure that highlights early medieval religious architecture. Traces of medieval fortifications and towers, as well as a Renaissance-era manor house, further illustrate the site’s transformation from a medieval defensive stronghold into a more residential and agricultural complex. The projects of Open Houses are based on sustainable principles, ensuring that Lohra Castle is maintained not just as a historical monument but as a living environment where culture and nature coexist. The castle is surrounded by a vast natural protected area, making its preservation an effort that combines aspects of cultural and natural heritage conservation. Through their contributions, volunteers help safeguard the balance between history and nature, keeping Lohra Castle a welcoming place for future generations of visitors, researchers, and heritage enthusiasts.

VIN’s Environmental and Conservation Programs raise community awareness of critical environmental issues and develop effective solutions. VIN runs various ecological projects that aim to conserve, promote, and protect the environment and culture while preventing, mitigating, and controlling water, land, and air pollution to enhance the health, safety, and welfare of current and future generations. We utilize permaculture for sustainable farming and have been teaching and implementing it since 2018. We believe that permaculture plays a vital role in restoring the entire ecosystem! Agriculture provides subsistence and employment for 80% of Nepal's population, accounting for approximately 39% of the total GDP. The sector's development is crucial for empowering those who rely on it and for the national economy. Since Nepal is in the Himalayan region, climate change has significantly impacted the country. Water sources are drying up, new types of moths and insects have emerged, and the timing of crop cultivation has shifted. Unexpected climate changes, unpredictable rainfall, droughts, and more are the consequences of global warming that Nepalese farmers are facing.
As a volunteer, you will collaborate with the farmer’s VIN, which specializes in permaculture. The work is typically hands-on, and you’ll design the farm according to permaculture principles, including cultivating crops, weeding, irrigating, gathering materials, digging, and creating beds. Support farmers in making organic fertilizers like compost. Observe, interact, learn and implement.

Enjoy being outdoors! The main task of the project will be to improve the outdoor infrastructure so that even more people enjoy spending their leisure time outdoors and in nature. • You will be installing benches at various points along the edge of paths or forests - in some places this will first require clearing work and the construction of a foundation, while in other places existing wooden benches or picnic areas will simply be renovated. • You will renovate a wooden shelter for hikers. This includes woodwork and painting as well as wood and roof maintenance. • To motivate children in particular to spend their free time outdoors, you will maintain an existing playground in the middle of the forest and add some new play equipment. • To complete all these small tasks you will also improve the surrounding of your accommodation. This will include landscape gardening and renovation work. The group of volunteers will be split up in the two different tasks every day. You are also invited to support the local festival team during their village party.
Schwarzerden is a small village with 430 inhabitants and already experienced in welcoming international volunteers. After six successful international IBG workcamps they again invite a group of volunteers to support them to improve the local infrastructure and to enrich the village festival on July 12th to 14th. The previous camps have always been a big fun for the volunteers and the locals.
The workcamp will take place in the small village Schwarzerden, which belongs to the community of Freisen. Freisen is situated in the north of Saarland in a rural area. You can find many interesting places in Freisen: a historical railway, cultural and natural sights, a small zoo, a spa bath (but only few of them in Schwarzerden). The local villagers are already looking forward to getting to know you and to welcoming you at the local village festival. We will do our best to arrange excursions with the support of locals but due to the poot public transport they will for sure be limited. The project is perfect for volunteers who enjoy being outside and in nature.
The accommodation provided is the former centre of the sports club of Schwarzerden. It is now in public use for bigger events in this village. All necessary facilities are a hall for sleeping, a kitchen, toilettes, showers… Camping beds are provided but please bring your sleeping bag! If the weather is fine, you have the opportunity to eat and chill outside. Attention: This place is quite isolated; the village of Schwarzerden is 1km away. Next to the accommodation you can find the sports ground, you can use it whenever you want. You will have a beautiful view over the valley; you will be surrounded by forests and meadows. Just make a campfire and enjoy nature. Please bring your own sleeping bag and pillow (if required). Your group of volunteers will be responsible for grocery shopping and cooking together. The food will be bought with the camp budget and everybody will take turns for cooking, washing the dishes and cleaning. In order to reduce our carbon footprint on the planet, we encourage volunteers to reduce meat and try more sustainable dishes.
Please check www.bahn.com for a connection from anywhere in Germany to “Schwarzerden Bahnhof, Freisen”. This bus stop is only 300m from your accommodation. You will travel by train to St. Wendel and change to the bus No. 604. Please make sure to arrive in St. Wendel before 20.25 p.m. to reach the last bus of the day to Schwarzerden

Help restore a hut at the heart of the “hunters' site” in the south of France! The commune of Puy-Sanière would like to restore the “hunters' hut”, a structure overlooking the Lac de Serre-Ponçon, and through which many hikers pass. Once used as a base for hunters, this structure is part of the commune's rural heritage and could also become a shelter for walkers. You'll be taking part in the restoration of the hut's enclosure during a 3-week international work camp. You'll work on cleaning up the site, deconstructing it before starting to build, and finally constructing a low wall. At the end of your work, the walls will extend over 24 linear meters, allowing the hut to become a used shelter again! This is a high-mountain project, so you'll need to read the description carefully before signing up. You'll be asked to provide a cover letter before you can register!
Together with the Parc des Ecrins, Concordia has decided to set up a project in the Puy-Sanières mountain area. This is part of an overall project by the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur delegation to work in the transalpine and Franco-Italian zones. Our aim is to highlight the need to restore dry-stone huts for workcamps.
Puy-Sanières is a commune in southern France, located on the southern flank of Mont Guillaume (2,552 m), at the southernmost tip of the Écrins massif. It lies in the Hautes-Alpes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, near the Serre-Ponçon lake. The site of the “hunters' hut” is located a few kilometers away from the center of the village of Puy-Sanières, on land mainly devoted to pastoralism and soft tourism activities. The site will be punctuated by leisure activities, such as discovering the region and its specialities, hiking and other sporting activities, as well as opportunities to meet the local population.
You'll be accommodated outside the hut, in a large shady area where tents (supplied by CONCORDIA) will be pitched to provide shelter from the elements. A party room is also available, with access to WCs and a covered kitchen. Telephone reception, but no WIFI. Meals are prepared either in an outdoor kitchen or in the covered kitchen. You'll share the various collective tasks and prepare meals together. A budget will be allocated to the animators and you will participate in the shopping and preparation of meals, giving priority to healthy, vegetarian and local products.
Please not that you will need to provide a cover letter to participate to this project. Foreigners belonging to the European Union must bring with them a personal EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), and everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate. If health issues happen on the project, volunteers will have to pay for it, and will then be reimbursed once back in their home country.
The meeting point is at EMBRUN train station at 6PM on 10/07. Please consider using low-carbon transportation (train or bus, rather than airplane) for a sustainable international workcamp. Train reservations are possible about 4 months before departure on the SNCF website, link below: https://www.sncf-connect.com/. If you are coming first by plane, remember that you will need some time to commute from the airport to the train station, therefore we recommend that you arrive early enough for you not to rush and have a stress-free journey.
Remember to bring gloves, work clothes and shoes. Nights can be chilly, so bring a good comforter and warm clothes. Don't forget to bring sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, etc.). You can also take along recipes from your country/region, music instruments and games. The last day is for departure, usually in the morning.
