Your mission on the international volunteer workcamp: to take care of these two local heritage features. Accompanied by a professional in traditional masonry, you and your team will help the oven to get back to its former glory: cleaning the inside of the building, rebuilding pretty stone benches and re-pointing the walls. You'll soon get the hang of it! As for the spring, you'll be needed for a complete clean-up: emptying the bottom of the basin, cleaning the stones in the washhouse, disbursing and covering with pebbles the small square in front of the washhouse to make it pleasant and accessible to all. In addition to this work, you'll reflect together on sustainable development through the use of traditional techniques in the restoration of the oven and the basin, but also in the daily life of the group. You'll have the opportunity to present the progress you've made to the local population and tourists. It's a chance to meet young people your own age from all over the world, and to take part in a meaningful project!
The small village of Fontanges lies at the heart of the Auvergne Volcanoes Natural Park. In this unspoilt valley, hikers come to explore the trails around Puy Mary, Europe's largest volcano, and to take part in the many events that the village offers in summer: local producers' markets, village balls, concerts, traditional dance demonstrations, bread festival.... The hamlet of Chastrade lies on the plateau above the village; along one of its streets, a traditional bread oven tells the story of a long tradition of festivities, evening gatherings and storytelling by the fireside, and good bread baked over a wood fire for locals and passing walkers. A little further on, the hamlet's spring provides water for hikers and refreshment for cattle. Le petit village de Fontanges se situe au cœur du parc naturel des volcans d'Auvergne. Town hall of Riaño
The town of Riaño is located in the heart of the Cantabrian Mountains in the historic Montaña de Riaño region. A fairly extensive space that has been protected under the figure of the Montaña de Riaño y Mampodre Regional Park, the prelude to the well-known Picos de Europa National Park. An impressive natural space covered by the dammed waters of the Esla and Yuso rivers. Riaño has been a municipality marked by the great environmental catastrophe caused by the construction of the reservoir. Although Riaño did not completely disappear, a large part of the old town remains submerged. In spite of everything, it has many incentives to dedicate an in-depth visit to it to see the uniqueness and beauty of the area. There is a Hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Rosario next to which rests the so-called most beautiful bench in León because of this natural viewpoint. The visit will then take us along the so-called Paseo del Recuerdo. A one kilometer long pedestrian path that runs along the edge of the swamp. The most beautiful viewpoint are outside the village: Las Hazas viewpoint and the Valcayo viewpoint. It is a very short and spectacular road. One of the best panoramic views in the area. There are many hiking trails that can be done in the area, but one of the most emblematic is the ascent to Pico Gilbo (1679 meters). It´s also recommended the ascent to Pico Yordás. The views are also wonderful but the slope is somewhat greater. And, finally, you have another of the most mythical ascents at the top of Peñas Pintas. Same, although it lacks great technical difficulties, the route requires quite a bit of effort. The privileged situation of Riaño makes it a fantastic point from which to make wonderful excursions in the surrounding area: Macizo de Mampodre y Valle de Valdeburón, Lois y la catedral de la Montaña, Valle de Sajambre y otros.
The accommodation will be done in the public school with several rooms. There will be bathrooms facilities and a kitchen where the volunteers can cook in team. The accommodation will be very basic. Sleeping bag is required.

Participants will have time to put the theory about photography into practice, walking around and exploring the city. At the end of the camp, the best photographs from each participant are selected for an online exhibition on SEEDS' social media. Participants should bring their own digital cameras, lenses, tripods and laptops if possible. While learning about photography, the participants have the opportunity to explore Icelandic culture by taking part in it, capturing it and also by displaying their work during the camp. One of our objectives is to empower young people to use photography to draw attention to environmental and cultural subjects and issues. Participants should be ready to spend time outdoors walking medium distances during activities and working within a flexible time schedule. Participants will be photographing in their free time outside of workshop hours with images to be discussed at group feedback sessions.
This is the eighteenth year (since 2008) that SEEDS organises a series of International Photo marathons, while we started organising camps open for teenagers in the year 2010. Throughout the year, participants from all over the world come to Iceland for an immersive photography-related learning camp. SEEDS coordinators help the participants to develop their unique photographic skills through workshops and feedback sessions on technical settings, compositional considerations, as well as to create conceptual frameworks highlighting the participants’ individual style.
Reykjavík is a dynamic, modern city which lives in harmony with nature, using renewable energy sources. The world’s northernmost capital bridges the Atlantic, between Europe and North America. Reykjavík is spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains and the Atlantic. It is an international city with a lively cosmopolitan cultural scene surrounded by beautiful nature.
SEEDS participants will stay in a house in Reykjavík. The facilities are basic with a kitchen, showers, and a washing machine. Everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions. Participants will sleep in shared rooms/dorms of up to 6 people. Please bring your own towel. Participants will receive food supplies and be in charge of the cooking and cleaning activities. Please note the food SEEDS provides will be vegetarian. Do not forget to bring some traditional/typical food, drinks, recipes, music or games from your country for the intercultural evening. Please be aware some items or ingredients may be expensive in Iceland and you will need to buy them yourselves or bring them from your country.
Participation fee EUR 650 (Euros), which needs to be transferred to SEEDS the latest one month before the camp starts to confirm the placement. It includes transportation from the meeting point to the camp (on the first day), the Golden Circle and Reykjanes excursions. We will visit spectacular waterfalls, geysers, impressive coastline, a volcano crater, the Thingvellir National Park and much more. Meeting time will be 18:00 (6:00 pm) in the afternoon of August 5 at the SEEDS office. Participants that cannot arrive on time (later flights) will be sent information on how to reach the camp location. Those arriving earlier the same day are welcome from 10:00 am to the office to drop their bags/luggage and wait for the meeting time. Additional excursions (eg. Hot River Hike, the South Shore or Snæfellsnes Peninsula) can be arranged at discount fares in case there is additional free time after the workshops and sessions of the camp. Weather may be cold or rainy, so we recommend bringing warm and/or waterproof clothes.
