Work

Volunteers will share their time between animation of the children living in the center and maintaining the center's outside areas, including its vegetable garden. They may also be asked to do some other little tasks, such as helping to sort clothes donated to the center. Animation: Half of the time, volunteers will propose and plan activities for children aged 3 to 10 who live in the center. Some examples could be: creative and artistic workshops, board games, walking excursions, going to the swimming pool, sports and games, movies, cultural visits, … If they wish, the center would be delighted if they also offer activities to the center's teenagers (12-18 years old). Some of the teenagers are also mothers. It is also possible for the volunteers to offer some activities for adults living in the center, but the children have priority. The volunteers will receive the support of the center’s animation team, who’s used to work with volunteers every summer. Outdoor maintenance and vegetable garden : The other half of the time, volunteers will take care of the center's vegetable garden and help the technical team maintain the center's outdoor areas. The vegetable garden was set up a few years ago and is usually maintained by a few residents and a staff member. It allows residents to benefit from fresh, seasonal vegetables. In summer, the vegetable garden requires constant attention: volunteers will therefore help with its maintenance and harvesting. The center also has a park, a children's playground, a volleyball court, etc. Volunteers will help ensure that these areas remain pleasant for residents to use, among other tasks by pulling out weeds.

Partner

The Fedasil reception center for asylum-seekers of Rixensart hosts individuals or families who have requested asylum in Belgium. They hope, with this request, to get refugee status which will allow them to stay legally in the country. These people come, for example, from Palestine, Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea, etc. and have fled situations of war, persecution, discrimination or environmental disasters. Before they can settle in Belgium and build their future there, their refugee status must be proven and granted through a long administrative process. In the meantime, they are hosted in this center near Brussels. Always waiting, the residents of the center never know what tomorrow may bring them. Individual situations are multiple and complex, but never easy. The life of the Fedasil center of Rixensart reflects these individual tragedies and the hopes of the residents. The Fedasil center of Rixensart has hosted groups of volunteers for many years. More info: https://www.facebook.com/FedasilRixensart/?locale=fr_FR

Location

Rixensart is a small town located 25 km from Brussels and 7 km from Wavre. Rixensart still retains its country charm but you can feel its proximity to Brussels (40 minutes by train, 20 by car). The Fedasil center is located outside the city center, but a few steps from the famous lake of Genval, the cinema, shops, supermarkets, the train station…

Accomodation

Volunteers will sleep in a mixed dormitory with 6 bunk beds, in an annex building. Toilets are located in the same building, but for showers, volunteers will have to go to the main building. Volunteers will have access to the washing machines in the center’s laundry room and can leave their personal belongings (passport, money, etc.) in the safe at reception if they wish. They will have access to Wi-Fi. Volunteers will be cooking their own meals in a small, basic kitchen. So feel free to bring your own recipe ideas, but keep in mind that it should be kept simple. Please let us know in advance if you have any special dietary requirements so that we can do some shopping ahead.

Requirements

We warn the volunteers that the consumption of alcohol is strictly forbidden inside the centre. The volunteers are required to have basic knowledge of French. Besides, it is necessary to have basic knowledge about group’s animation (songs, music, dance, plays…) and to be able to assume responsibility within a group. Be able to listen to others is very important there. This kind of workcamp is a very rich personal and human experience. It makes people aware of the complexity of certain social conditions related to the great inequalities on our planet. In order to demonstrate this, we ask the candidate volunteers: - to answer our specific questionnaire (if you do not have it yet, please ask it to your sending organization) - to send us a CGC (Certificate of good conduct) We will not confirm any placement request before the analysis of these documents.

Meeting point

Sunday the 13th of July at the train station of Rixensart around 3 pm. Find your route on: www.belgiantrain.be

Notes:

Work

The main goal of this camp will be that volunteers make the village move, but also that they learn a lot about local cultures (because it is in plural). Some of the tasks will be: renovation of the mural at the bus station, help to make the local Youth center prettier, cleaning the garbage on boats from the canal, painting the kids' playground, make sports' terrains look more representative, watering the trees maybe even with the firetruck, supporting the organizers of the festival "PactON"...

Partner

Pact Ruthenorum is a local organization dedicated to promotion of Rusyn's culture (ethnic Eastern-Slavic minority in South-Slavic Serbia; more on that nobody knows, that is why this project is important, haha). It is founded in 2004. with the mission to connect people all over the region and even all over the world. With that aim, they organized numerous festivals (mostly musical or traditional with the cultural topics) and workcamps. Its main focuses are music, nature and socializing. Young Researchers of Serbia (YRS) was founded in 1976. Our main aims are environmental protection and education, promotion of sustainable development, work with young people in an international context, promotion of scientific creativity and voluntarism and its values. Voluntary Service of Serbia is a volunteer exchange service center founded in 1990 as one of the sectors of YRS.

Location

Ruski Krstur is a village in the Kula municipality in the Sombor department of Vojvodina province. It has 3000 inhabitants approximately and majority of them are Rusyns (less-known Eastern-Slavic minority that we mentioned previously). It lays on the Small Backa canal (very important one for fertile lands all around the village). Free time will be spent in nature, walking and riding bicycles, swimming in the pool, meeting locals (hosts really care about this part). Also, some excursion to the interesting surroundings might be easily organized! Try to bring a positive attitude, meeting people from other cultures of this international village is really important to the host.

Accomodation

Volunteers will be accommodated in the local sports' hall, on the mattresses (bedding will be provided, but if you insist you can bring your own, hehe). The kitchen will be in the near Fire department (many associations cooperate closely in this interesting village). Food will be provided sometimes (with accent on national cuisine) and sometimes it will be made by volunteers. On few occasions there can be even outdoor preparation.

Requirements

There are no special requirements (except to not forget the smile and good energy), but if you like to make your life easier, bring sunscreen, adequate clothes and mosquito repellent as it gets hot and humid during the summer.

Meeting point

From Belgrade you take the train to Novi Sad and from there you can take the bus to the village. More precise-in its time.

Work

The major aspect of this project will be focusing on community lifestyles. Volunteers and community members will have an opportunity to experience and exchange both work and leisure behavior patterns in various activities, attitudes, interests, opinions, and values. This provides an opportunity to reflect on each involved person’s self-image or self-concept, the way they see themselves and believe they are seen by others. This is expected to be a composite of motivation, needs, and wants influenced by factors such as culture, family, reference groups, and social classes. In realization of the above objective, volunteers will join a series of activities that will include: Community economic life (I do what they do): Participation in the daily activities of community members. This will include working in small businesses, farming, handicrafts, arts, taking care of animals, and other daily economic activities of community members. Social-cultural life: Participation in various social aspects of community life, including traditional medicine and healthcare (learning and experience). Rituals: Visiting ritual sites, learning and understanding. Ceremonies: Participating in weddings, initiation, and other traditional and religious ceremonies available during that time. Language exchange: This will include Kiswahili language (1-2 hours every day) and an optional foreign language teaching class (1 hour per day, preferably English or French). Knowledge exchange: This will include intergenerational exchange—age groups' knowledge and experience-sharing events. Images of my (self, culture, country, etc.) vs. others. Community exhibitions: Sharing various arts, music, food, etc.

It is believed that the world’s population recently passed more than 7 billion people, an incredible number to measure. In Tanzania, Africa, as well as around the world, many people still barely meet anyone outside of a small circle of family, friends, and community, while even more never venture beyond the culture in which they were raised. The Intercultural Exposure Project aims to serve as an important means of introducing people around the world to realities they might not normally be exposed to. Many barriers have begun to fall between people around the world, with near-instantaneous communication allowing people on opposite sides of the world to meaningfully interact. The Intercultural Exposure Project encourages people from all walks of life to appreciate and understand distinct cultures and play a key role in creating productive dialogue across the world. The project will be hosted at Lolarash Lutheran Church.

Location

Nakilongos is an area of Longido District, Arusha, Tanzania, located about 112 km from Moshi town. The community is accessible via public transport starting from Moshi Main Bus Terminal to Tarakea and then changing to Kamwanga via Lolarash. Indigenous inhabitants are the Maasai tribe; however, due to the economic activities happening in the North Kilimanjaro Forest, there is a good mixture of people from various parts of the country. The community shares a border with Kenya as well as the Kilimanjaro Forest. If arriving from Kilimanjaro Airport (about 43 km), volunteers will need to take a shuttle to Moshi town. Possibilities and options for leisure activities include wildlife safari trips to Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, and Tarangire National Parks. Various packages are available depending on the available time and budget. Other options include mountain climbing (Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, and others) and eco and cultural tourism.

Accomodation

Accommodation will be at a community residential house. It is basic accommodation where volunteers should expect to use water, toilet, and have a bath. Mattresses will be provided in shared rooms. Volunteers are expected to help in meal preparation and cleaning. Vegetarian meals will be available for the entire period of the project.

Requirements

Potential volunteers for this project need to have sufficient language proficiency to understand instructions given in English. They should be flexible, open-minded, eager to learn, independent, and committed to treating others with respect. Volunteers should also have a non-judgmental approach that values different cultures, as well as an interest in people, cultures, and their stories.

Work

The work will be educative and mainly focused on environmental topics. As researchers from "Vladimir Mandić Manda" have this practice going on for years now, the scheme is very-well prepared. The accent is on learning, but also on meeting between people and spending time in the lovely nature. Every day there will be at least one important lecture, that will be led by experienced members of the organization. The topics will be chosen there, having in mind practical possibilities (the goal is that volunteers find out something and then apply it next day right there, on the field). Volunteers, as well, will be invited to make their own presentations of topics they choose. There will, also, be a few workshops on bushcraft i.e. surviving in the natural environment.

Partner

From Belgrade there are numerous busses and trains to Valjevo, so it can all be organized easily. More informationS you will have in the Infosheet.

Location

For 55 years, the association of researchers "Vladimir Mandić - Manda" has been gathering young people from Valjevo and beyond who have the desire to learn something more than what they learn in school, but certainly in a much nicer way. Their goals are initiation and support in organizing educational programs for young people, popularization of scientific research work and creativity among young people, encourage young people to be active and take part in organized activities, raising awareness of the need to protect and contribute to the preservation of the environment and historical-cultural heritage in the context of sustainable development, promotion and support for the development of volunteerism as well as contribution to solving problems in the local community, better understanding of peoples and cultures, friendship and peace, creating conditions for improving the position of young people and implementing youth initiatives, as well as advocating for adequate verification and affirmation of results achieved by young people.

Accomodation

Volunteers will be accommodated on the field in front of the mountaineer house (that has a bathroom). They will sleep in tents, on mats, which will be provided for them, but it is preferable to bring your own sleeping bag (if it can't be, we will provide them, don't worry). The tents will be for two, three and four people, but one gigantic tent for ten people will also be brought, so you can admire its grandiosity. Of course, volunteers that want to arrive with their own camping gear which includes all of the above, are very welcome, as well. In the house, there is a kitchen where every day three or four people (or more, it will be one big group) will be in charge of preparing, setting up and serving meals from ingredients that will be provided. They will certainly not do it alone, but with the support of camp leaders and researchers.
