Every summer, the daughters and sons of the village of Kuma-Apoti in Togo and the diaspora come together to cheerfully celebrate their Dunenyo-Za festival or development festival. These are solemn moments when the natives of the village of Kuma-Apoti, (one of the cleanest and ecological villages in Togo) meet to reflect on the future and the development of their village. For them, it is about giving new impetus to youth, promoting them in terms of education and learning and making resolutions for the local development of the village. The village's economy is mainly based on agriculture, around which various economic activities revolve.
Housing conditions are simple and adapted to each project site. Volunteers are housed in rooms of three or four, with the mix depending on the organization of the groups. Depending on the location, dry toilets and waterless showers may be used. The association provides plastic or foam mats, and volunteers can bring their own sleeping bags if necessary. Drinking water is available on site, but access to electricity and the Internet may be limited due to power cuts and difficulties accessing the network. During the work, volunteers will prepare their own meals. An internal organization will distribute domestic tasks, including cooking, alternating between the groups. Nepal faces significant challenges as a developing country, with over 25% of its population living below the poverty line. Ranked 145th on the Human Development Index, the government reports a life expectancy of 70.7 years. Malnutrition affects 29% of children under the age of five, and access to health and sanitation facilities remains severely limited. In many rural and underserved communities, awareness of proper hygiene practices is minimal, with only 12% of poor households having adequate sanitation facilities. Additionally, around 5.6 million people, or 20% of the population, lack access to clean drinking water, posing serious health risks. Sanitation, hygiene, and access to safe water are essential for improving health outcomes and driving social and economic development. These elements are critical for achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of equitable sanitation for all. Without proper sanitation, communities remain vulnerable to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH)-related diseases, worsened by inadequate garbage disposal practices. These issues not only threaten public health but also harm the environment. There is an urgent need for education and advocacy campaigns to raise awareness and create lasting improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene practices. Through its project, Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN) aims to address these challenges by educating local communities, particularly children, on health, hygiene, and sanitation. Volunteers will raise awareness about WASH standards and prepare communities for future pandemic management. They will collaborate with youth and rural populations, employing innovative approaches and tools designed in consultation with the VIN team to ensure the project meets the specific needs of the local context.
Volunteers will play a key role in educating and raising awareness among youth, children, and rural communities about water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). They are encouraged to bring innovative ideas and develop tools tailored to the local context in consultation with the VIN team. Educating communities about safe water practices and preventing waterborne diseases. Raising awareness about health, hygiene, and sanitation in schools and the community. Organizing cleanliness drives in schools and neighborhoods to promote a cleaner environment. Utilizing creative mediums such as charts, slogans, posters, banners, T-shirts, quotes, videos, films, photographs, and discussions to effectively engage and educate villagers.

This includes the cutting of trees and bushes to maintain the forest areas and other practical work. While working you can enjoy the fresh air, the beautiful nature, and the fantastic view of the beaches, thanks to your highly valued and important work! Volunteers will be in charge of ecological part of the festival. They will take care of waste separation, composting, and education of visitors about the preferable dealing with the trash. They will also learn and teach about compost toilets and biofilters for water. Also, there will be opportunities for them to be part of healing and musical events at the festival (they will not only "work", naturally, they are here to have fun, as well).
Assocition "Eko Heroj" (Eco Hero) is a non-prfit organization that has for its goal protection of the environment, then promotion of ecological topics, but also of volunteerism in general. The main activities are attempts to reach as many people as possible speaking about these important topics. So, there are always many actions of cleaning the nature, many organized workshops, but there are also workcamps now and then. For them priority is zero waste philosophy, which they explain to people whenever they have a chance. Young Researchers of Serbia (YRS) was founded in 1976. Our main aims are environmental protection and education, promotion of sustainable development, work with young people in an international context, promotion of scientific creativity and voluntarism and its values. Voluntary Service of Serbia is a volunteer exchange service center founded in 1990 as one of the sectors of YRS.
The camp is located on the mountain Rtanj (pronounced-Rtany) in lower part of Eastern Serbia. It is well-known for its intact nature, rich flora and fauna, but also its legends and stories, because the shape of the mountain is the one of pyramid (to what festival owes its name; uuu, so mysterious). The best thing you can do there is ask locals to tell you some of those, so you can enjoy in the depth behind myths. Other than that, it is wonderful place, where you can hike and relax, searching for fresh air, clean water and nice locals. Of course, during the festival, volunteers will have the opportunity to access every part of it, as well as to participate in many interesting workshops on different topics. Since everything is made for people there to have great time, just bring your smile and all the rest will be for eternal memory!
The accommodation will be in tents (that will be provided, but you can bring your own, if you want more comfort, we will not make any problems; sleeping bags, as well, can be given by local host), there will be compost toilets (important to know) and showers. Food will be prepared by local chef who will use local healthy and seasonal products. Although there will be some cutlery (knife, fork and spoon), it is recommended that you bring your own, since that policy is something favorited by the local host.
There are no specific requirements, but if you want to make your life easier bring sunscreen, adequate clothes and mosquito repellent as it gets hot and humid during the summer in Serbia.
It will be Boljevac or Sokobanja. In the Infosheet everything will be clarified.

Lohra Castle, with its centuries-old architecture and vast natural surroundings, is not only a site of historical significance but also a living, functioning place that requires continuous care and attention. This workcamp offers volunteers the opportunity to actively contribute to the sustainable management of the castle, ensuring that its grounds remain accessible, welcoming, and well preserved. While this workcamp does not involve hands-on heritage conservation interventions, it plays an equally essential role in the long-term care of the site, allowing future visitors and guests to experience and appreciate Lohra Castle as a harmoniously maintained historic and natural space. Beyond the practical tasks, the workcamp offers a unique and immersive experience. When the castle closes its doors to the public in the evenings, it becomes the volunteers' home, a place where they can experience the privilege of inhabiting a medieval site. In this way, they take on the role of stewards, caring for the space as if it were their own. The experience encourages a sense of responsibility, ownership, and connection to heritage, reinforcing the idea that heritage sites thrive not only through large-scale restoration projects but also through the daily care and attention given to them by those who value their existence.
The volunteers will engage in seasonal maintenance tasks, including mowing and collecting overgrown grass, clearing organic material from public areas, and ensuring that the castle’s open spaces remain well-kept. These tasks are crucial for the aesthetic and functional upkeep of the historic ensemble, preserving the visual integrity of the castle and its surroundings. The work also extends to the general maintenance of communal spaces and halls, contributing to the overall experience of visitors who use the castle for cultural events, educational programmes, and retreats. The income generated from these activities is directly reinvested into the castle’s conservation and educational projects, meaning that the work of volunteers directly supports heritage preservation efforts, even if not through conservation itself.
Despite its historical significance, Lohra Castle was abandoned for several decades, leading to neglect and structural deterioration. In the 1990s, the site was rediscovered and revitalised through the efforts of Open Houses, which has since used the castle as a base for heritage conservation, cultural initiatives, and international collaboration. Today, it serves as a centre for hands-on restoration projects organised by Open Houses ́ daughter organisation European Heritage Volunteers, as well as training courses organised by partner educational institutions, and volunteer-driven maintenance efforts such as this workcamp, welcoming participants from across the world to engage with its unique built heritage.
Lohra Castle, located in northern Thuringia, Germany, stands as one of the region’s most representative medieval fortifications located in the vicinity of important trade routes that connected the medieval world of central Europe. Though its present form is modest, the castle continues to command a striking position within the hilly landscape near a natural reserve. With a history spanning over a thousand years, the site reflects multiple layers of architectural evolution, shaped by shifting political, economic, and social contexts over the centuries. The architectural ensemble of Lohra Castle presents a rich assortment of historical styles, with elements dating back to the 11th century. Among its most remarkable features is a Romanesque double-floored chapel from the 12th century, an exceptional structure that highlights early medieval religious architecture. Traces of medieval fortifications and towers, as well as a Renaissance-era manor house, further illustrate the site’s transformation from a medieval defensive stronghold into a more residential and agricultural complex. The projects of Open Houses are based on sustainable principles, ensuring that Lohra Castle is maintained not just as a historical monument but as a living environment where culture and nature coexist. The castle is surrounded by a vast natural protected area, making its preservation an effort that combines aspects of cultural and natural heritage conservation. Through their contributions, volunteers help safeguard the balance between history and nature, keeping Lohra Castle a welcoming place for future generations of visitors, researchers, and heritage enthusiasts.
