This project is actively working for SDGs 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), organized together with Ohara Eco Project (OEP) since 2009. There were 600 inhabitants in Ohara village with 90 houses 100 years ago, but now only 1 elder! OEP was founded by the local people in 2006 and has rehabilitated 7 houses of cultural heritage. They maintain and revive the trails and fields, organize the workcamps with NICE and run various eco tours, so got the best prize in the award of Creating Home Town by the national government in 2016! The family workcamp started since 2013 (President of NICE keeps joining as a leader with his kids) and hosted a lot of families from Japan, Asia, Europe and Americas with great success. *Outcome of this workcamp: In 2024, 17 vols. from 5 families joined and made great contribution to have dried over sleeping mats, weed in the tea field (see the pictures), made natural clay for walls, cleaned the village road, etc. Please see the presentation made by the volunteer for the IVS contest in Japan; https://www.slideshare.net/nice-workcamp/e5-55193721 (only Japanese for the moment, but you can at least enjoy the pictures!)
200 km north east of Osaka. Katsuyama is an agricultural city and famous for dinosaurs discovery. Ohara village is located at 500 m a.s.l. and surrounded by the mountains with very rich nature (e.g., the spring water is drinkable and very tasty!). Help us to create pallet outdoor furniture for the commune of Les Mureaux, creating a cheerful, welcoming environment for local residents! The city of Les Mureaux has a number of social and youth structures that are essential for social action at family level, and for the city's cultural activities. The aim of the project will be to create an outdoor living room using recycled wooden street furniture, so that it can once again become a welcoming and convivial space for the community, and in particular for the neighborhood's young people! Workshops will be organised to raise awareness of sustainable development, as well as workshops with children and many community visits.
For the fourth year, Concordia is pleased to be working in partnership with the town of Les Mureaux. You'll be teamed up with young people from the community, thanks to the town council, which has asked us to get involved in a civic and supportive approach.
Les Mureaux is a suburban town with a population of 32,000 in the northern Yvelines region, just under an hour from Paris. Civic activities include a visit to the Musée de l'Immigration in Paris, a meeting with the NGO Terre d'Asile, Refugee Food, the Château de Versailles and the Amarres third place center. Social events in Les Mureaux and Paris are planned throughout the workcamp.
You will be accommodated in a hard-standing building (gymnasium, school or social center) with hard-standing toilets and showers. Lunches and dinners will be cooked collectively, i.e. you will take it in turns to cook for all the volunteers. Weekday lunches will be taken in the canteen. A budget will be allocated to the leaders for the shopping in which you will participate, giving priority to healthy and local products, and vegetarian products. Wifi will not be available at the mission site and at the accommodation site. There is no washing machine but laundries are accessible in town if needed, 4€.
Foreigners from the European Union must bring with them a personal EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), and everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate. If health issues arise on the project, volunteers will have to pay for it, and will then be reimbursed once back in their home country. Please note that a copy of your criminal record will be required to participate to the project.
The meeting point is at Les MUREAUX train station at 6pm on 25/07. To get there, take train line J from Gare Saint-Lazare. From Orly airport: Take the OrlyVal bus to Antony, then RER B to Châtelet, then Line 14 to Saint-Lazare. From Roissy - Charles de Gaulle airport: take RER B to Gare du Nord, RER E to Haussmann-Saint Lazare. Wherever possible, consider using a green travel option (train and bus rather than plane) for a more sustainable journey.
Bring work clothes. Nights can be chilly, so bring warm clothes, a sleeping bag, a pillowcase and a pillow. Bring rain equipment (fleece, raincoat, etc.). Don't forget your sun protection (hat, sunglasses, cream, etc.), a water bottle and your swimsuit for swimming at the leisure center. There will be plenty of time for socializing, especially with local adults, children and teenagers. If you'd like to share a little of your culture (music, songs, recipes, unusual objects...), don't hesitate to bring along a little piece of your country or region, children's books, a Bluetooth speaker or a musical instrument to show off your favorite playlist! The internet connection is very weak, so you'll be immersed in nature. There's no launderette nearby, so laundry will mainly be done by hand. The last day of the workcamp (8/08) is devoted to departure in the morning.

The project takes place in the refugee centre in Emmen which is a location for families with children. The children you will be working with are between 4 and 12 years. These children participate in a school program, but during the months of July and August, there is the summer holiday break. The volunteers organise activities for and with the children. This type of work calls for creative people who can make up all sorts of games from scratch to play with the children: music, sports, arts, language sessions, creativity, etc. Therefore the content of this project is up to you and the other participants. The games are scheduled throughout the week.
The location of the project is the Refugee Centre Emmen. Emmen is a city of about 60.000 inhabitants in the province of Drenthe in the northern part of the Netherlands. This refugee centre (in Dutch: ‘AZC Emmen’) has a capacity for about 400 refugees. This particular place is a location for families with under age children whose application for asylum has been denied by the Dutch government. These families will in time return to their homeland. Our partner is the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (in Dutch: COA). The COA provides accommodation during the asylum procedure and prepares asylum seekers for staying in the Netherlands, returning to their country of origin or transmigration. At the moment COA manages about 100 centres in the Netherlands. COA is an independent administrative body funded by the Dutch Ministry of Justice. The COA works together with a partner named ‘De Vrolijkheid’: the National Foundation for the Promotion of Happiness. The Happiness is a multicultural, not-for-profit network of artists, play writers, actors, musicians and volunteers who invest in children and teenagers in asylum-seeking centres. The Happiness organises creative activities on a regular basis in 30 asylum-seeking centres in the Netherlands. Please note that it is not allowed to take pictures and/or make videos in the refugee centre.

Some of the teenagers are also mothers. It is also possible for the volunteers to offer some activities for adults living in the center, but the children have priority. The volunteers will receive the support of the center’s animation team, who’s used to work with volunteers every summer. Outdoor maintenance and vegetable garden : The other half of the time, volunteers will take care of the center's vegetable garden and help the technical team maintain the center's outdoor areas. The vegetable garden was set up a few years ago and is usually maintained by a few residents and a staff member. It allows residents to benefit from fresh, seasonal vegetables. In summer, the vegetable garden requires constant attention: volunteers will therefore help with its maintenance and harvesting. The center also has a park, a children's playground, a volleyball court, etc. Volunteers will help ensure that these areas remain pleasant for residents to use, among other tasks by pulling out weeds.
he Fedasil reception center for asylum-seekers of Rixensart hosts individuals or families who have requested asylum in Belgium. They hope, with this request, to get refugee status which will allow them to stay legally in the country. These people come, for example, from Palestine, Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea, etc. and have fled situations of war, persecution, discrimination or environmental disasters. Before they can settle in Belgium and build their future there, their refugee status must be proven and granted through a long administrative process. In the meantime, they are hosted in this center near Brussels. Always waiting, the residents of the center never know what tomorrow may bring them. Individual situations are multiple and complex, but never easy. The life of the Fedasil center of Rixensart reflects these individual tragedies and the hopes of the residents. The Fedasil center of Rixensart has hosted groups of volunteers for many years. More info: https://www.facebook.com/FedasilRixensart/?locale=fr_FR
Rixensart is a small town located 25 km from Brussels and 7 km from Wavre. Rixensart still retains its country charm but you can feel its proximity to Brussels (40 minutes by train, 20 by car). The Fedasil center is located outside the city center, but a few steps from the famous lake of Genval, the cinema, shops, supermarkets, the train station…
Volunteers will sleep in a mixed dormitory with 6 bunk beds, in an annex building. Toilets are located in the same building, but for showers, volunteers will have to go to the main building. Volunteers will have access to the washing machines in the center’s laundry room and can leave their personal belongings (passport, money, etc.) in the safe at reception if they wish. They will have access to Wi-Fi. Volunteers will be cooking their own meals in a small, basic kitchen. So feel free to bring your own recipe ideas, but keep in mind that it should be kept simple. Please let us know in advance if you have any special dietary requirements so that we can do some shopping ahead.
We warn the volunteers that the consumption of alcohol is strictly forbidden inside the centre. The volunteers are required to have basic knowledge of French. Besides, it is necessary to have basic knowledge about group’s animation (songs, music, dance, plays…) and to be able to assume responsibility within a group. Be able to listen to others is very important there. This kind of workcamp is a very rich personal and human experience. It makes people aware of the complexity of certain social conditions related to the great inequalities on our planet. In order to demonstrate this, we ask the candidate volunteers: - to answer our specific questionnaire (if you do not have it yet, please ask it to your sending organization) - to send us a CGC (Certificate of good conduct) We will not confirm any placement request before the analysis of these documents.
Sunday the 3d of August at the train station of Rixensart around 3 pm. Find your route on: www.belgiantrain.be
