With the help of a professional for the half of the time the volunteers will extend a dry stone wall built in the previous workcamp by international volunteers in order to separate the garden itself from the part of the field developed as relaxation area with tables and benches in wood. The rest of the time is dedicated to gardening tasks (watering, clearing, planting, transplanting, cleaning, etc.) in the CBB gardens as well as in other gardens shared near other associations on Marche en Famenne (Jardin des Petits Pots, Maison de la Culture, etc.). This project is another step forward in our idea to create a “green space” for young people for learning about gardening, permaculture, biodiversity, for meeting, for having outdoor activities, … but also to create more links with other local associations that develop environmental projects. BEWARE: This workcamp is based on manual and outdoor tasks which might be sometimes hard.
At the end of 2020, CBB received the management of a plot of land of around 20 acres, near the center of Marche-en-Famenne, in order to work on the theme of ecological transition and responsible consumption while creating activities that encourage the meeting of small groups of young people. We developed the plot into a garden, where we lead workshops (discovery of permaculture, construction of nest boxes, insect hotels, vegetable beds, etc.) and cultivate useful resources for young people who invest in our activities. We want our garden to become a place of meeting and (bio)diversity. It will live and evolve thanks to the interaction of the young people involved. Above all, our garden must allow us to cultivate social ties, such as sustainable and inclusive practices between more or less vulnerable young people, with or without disabilities. Your help will ensure the renovation and improvement of the rural landscape of Marche-en-Famenne (UN SDG 11 Sustainable cities and communities, UN SDG 15 Life on land). Website : https://compagnonsbatisseurs.be/actualites/labcap48/
Marche-en-Famenne is a city in the countryside and it is also CBB’s town! You can find everything there: schools, supermarkets, industries… But still, it is surrounded by woods, fields and small villages where the life rhythm remains rural. Liège, Namur, Brussels and Luxembourg can be easily reached by train in about one hour. For more information see: www.marche.be
The accommodation is in a boarding school (Saint François complex): a corridor with double rooms; the toilets and showers are on the same floor with also a small kitchenette for enjoying a coffee or tea in peace. No smoking inside. A large common area is also available for indoor activities. You will cook your own meals, so bring your recipes to enjoy the ‘kitchen life’! PLEASE NOTE: you will share the kitchen and living spaces with the youth exchange group (26 young people) that will take place at the same time as this project. So expect a great experience of community life, sharing, intercultural encounters, etc.
This project is a volunteering team, supported by the European Solidarity Corps program of the European Union. Compared to the usual workcamp participation scheme, some main financial and administrative differences must be underlined: The participation to the ESC volunteering teams is subjects to several principles and conditions, presented on the ESC webpage: https://europa.eu/youth/solidarity/mission_en The volunteers do not have to pay any fee (not sending, nor participation fee) to attend the project The volunteers will receive pocket money, calculated on basis of 4€/day, once they arrive on the project in Belgium The volunteers will receive a financial support for their travel, according to a maximum amount established in accordance with their travel distance (up to 275€) The volunteers need to register on the European Solidarity Corps Portal; CBB will organize their matching, on the online system, with the volunteering project The volunteers will have to complete a participation report, submitted online by the ESC portal

This year, we'll be continuing the tradition by rehabilitating the estate's perimeter walls. Activities will include erecting the scaffolding, preparing the site by selecting the stones and setting up the formwork, assembling the stones, rehabilitating the base, creating the roof using small Bourbonnais tiles, applying a traditional finishing coat, and repairing the old stoneworks.
Discover castle life in the heart of the Auvergne at Les Prureaux! But it's much more than just an experience: it's about living, laughing, sharing and above all contributing together! Come and play your part in the restoration of the wall that surrounds the estate! The tasks will be mowing andcollecting the grass. Additionally, the participants of the project will support the work on renovations on the Castle grounds. The hilly massive around Lohra Castle is listed as National Nature Reserve. Open Houses supports the Reserve since several years with volunteering activities. In a forest near the Castle the participants will remove trees and bushes which are not corresponding with the protection aims in order to clean the paths and make them enjoyable again. They will also will collect the wood remaining after maintenance works, load it on a truck, unload it at the castle and split and stack it for wintertime or for the fireplace. Besides that, the volunteers will continue the maintenance of the green area at the castle. In addition, in the later part of the summer, they will support the recollection, assortment, splitting and storage of wood to prepare the castle for the harsh winter months. PARTICIPATION TERMS Participants have to take part for the whole time of the project. The working part consists in six hours per day. Be informed, that during all projects the work will take place also on rainy and cold days and be prepared for that.
Open Houses – not empty buildings, but places with visible and invisible traces of history, places which have grown and decayed over the centuries, places which were shaped by those people who lived there long ago as well those who left only yesterday – places which will be shaped by those who live there or who come as a guest. Open Houses – rooms which want to be filled with dreams and ideas, with meetings and exchange, by people of different backgrounds, different cultures, different generations and different ideas and visions. The history of Open Houses Network dates back to the mid-1980s, when a group of young people started to restore village churches in East Germany in voluntary work to protect them from decay. The engagement for these buildings united people who enjoyed the freedom these activities provided and who filled these rooms with life again in ways which by far exceed the craftsmen's work done – through exhibitions, concerts, making music together or just sitting by the camp fire. Meanwhile, rooms free of political and ideological pressure are no longer urgently required; however, places have become rare where people can meet without commercial pressure, free of bureaucracy and institutionalism, free of nepotism and the exclusion which it produces. What should be easy – to go somewhere in order to meet people and to work together – has become difficult. The tightrope walk between, on the one hand, public activities in a monetary and functional sense, and the retreat into private life on the other, is very difficult, and it requires a lot of power and permanent efforts to tackle red tape and financial restrictions. Free spaces are less and less understood as common property, and are permanently being cut back. The idea of public property seems to have gone out of fashion, and places of common responsible work have become rare. Open Houses Network tries to create and protect such spaces. In this process, we do not want to be the doers, but be people who have a vision, who want to initiate something, but who also are aware of depending on the co-operation of others. We understand our projects and events as offers – as offers to create space for commitment, for changes, for meetings.
LOCATION: Next towns: Bleicherode (6 km), Nordhausen (20 km), Erfurt (75 km) Region: Thuringia Lohra Castle is situated in the heart of Germany in Northern Thuringia. The castle, which is surrounded by a scenic hilly landscape, is located on the edge of a natural reserve area. Being one of the largest castles in Thuringia, the history of castle Lohra begins in the Middle Ages. Its architectural styles which have been preserved in the structures of the ensemble attest to a prolonged period of occupation and historical evolution up until today. The castle is more than thousand years old, and it is a relic of German medieval past that is still standing at the heart of a region through which the story of the German nation has been written. Today, it includes twenty buildings from different time periods, showcasing this historical evolution to the enchantment of visitors and heritage enthusiasts: medieval fortifications, remnants of a tower from the 11th century, a Romanesque double-floored chapel, a manor house from the Renaissance period as well as stables and granaries from the 19th and the early 20th centuries. The ensemble is situated in the centre of a beautiful forest. LEISURE TIME The camp places are mostly situated in small villages in rural areas, so the participants should not expect busy places and normal city activities for the leisure time during the working days. Small trips in walking distance are possible in the afternoon. On the weekends it is possible to organise an excursion to nearby cities or to have other leisure activities.
ACCOMMODATION: shared rooms with 2 – 5 beds in 3 guest houses, warm shower (limited hot water), 1 camp kitchen (cold water), coal-burning stoves FOOD: The meals will be prepared together as they are part of the community life, what means that every participant will be responsible for the meal at least once during its stay. So, it would be very nice if the participants could bring typical recipes from home in order to introduce each other to the preparation of food from all over the world.
WHAT TO BRING Usually, average temperatures in Germany during the summer time are about 20o C to 30o C; during the night it will get colder. It is possible that there may be two weeks of non-stop sunshine, but every day rain is not impossible either. In September and October, it's about 8o C to 18o C. Passport Insurance Certificates (EU-members should bring their European Health Insurance Card; those which have an individual travel insurance should bring the certificate) sleeping bag stable work boots, really appropriate for practical work appropriate clothes, waterproof coat mosquito protection lotion dictionary typical recipes, sweets, music, instruments and games from the participants' home country for group activities
TERMINAL: Next bus station: Großlohra, Friedrichslohra/Wartehalle Next railway stations: Gebra/Hainleite (5 km), Wolkramshausen (12 km). Next airports: Leipzig/Halle (LEJ, 155 km), Frankfurt/Main (FRA, 280 km), Berlin (BER, 300 km)
Open Houses does not provide internet access or phone at the sites. So, it will be not possible for the participants to check emails or to make phone calls from the project place. The next public phones are at most of the places far away and there are no internet cafes nearby. In the case that participants will need access to internet or phone they should prepare themselves in advance. Furthermore, washing machines are not available at the camp places.

This work camp is for nature lovers, since the work will be mainly outdoors. There is a lot of work around the natural reserve “Upahl-Lenzen”. Since it’s not possible to use common agricultural techniques, volunteers have to do everything manually. More over every meadow around has to be cut and the grass have to be put aside. The aim of this project is to help to protect this unique reserve through your contribution. This project will be done in cooperation with the environmental agency of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
This project is organized by NiG e.V., a german non-profit and non-government organization. In this project we work together with the local agency for agriculture and environment.
Lohmen is a village in the middle of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and is surrounded by the nature reserve Upahl-Lenzen. It has about 850 inhabitants but also many possibilities for outdoor activities like a labyrinth, sports grounds and an archeological nature trail. There is a lake in walking distance where you can swim and also much nature to enjoy in general. Leisure time activities: Excursions (swimming, short trips) can be planned.
The volunteers will stay at the building of a former kindergarten. Food (also vegetarian/ vegan) is included, but meals have to be prepared by the volunteers. (we like to do international cooking days, so every nation cooks one typical/traditional meal for everyone) On the last weekend, we arrrange a trip to Rostock (next biggest city, directly at the sea) and stay in our office accomodation. There we have the opportunity, to either go the beach or into clubs and stuff like this :)
Please bring a sleeping bag, working clothes (gloves), a mattress pad (and good motivation :D).
BE CAREFUL! There are two different villages called "Lohmen" in Germany. The workcamp will be in that Lohmen between Guestrow and Goldberg in the region Mecklenburg Western Pomerania.

This camp allows volunteers to learn about global and local environmental issues through non-formal educational activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits, as well as to contribute directly to environmental protection by joining outdoor coastal cleanup tasks in the shores and beaches. Additional work will be undertaken in the area of our accommodation such as removing old fences dangerous to wildlife and visitors, as well as helping with renovation and maintenance of the house. We may also be marking some walking paths and, depending on the advance of the mentioned tasks, volunteers might do some forestry tasks in a small forest planted in the area, like trimming the vegetation or planting some trees. This camp combines learning, sharing, hands-on work and fun. No previous experience is needed. Volunteers should prepare to share environmental issues from their countries and be ready to spend time outdoors, walking during the cleanups. Volunteers should be ready to adapt and be flexible with the work and free-time schedule, as depending on the weather, we may not be able to perform some of the planned activities.
The Awareness, Engagement and Action project is part of a series of camps organised by SEEDS in cooperation with different partners, where we try to raise awareness about current environmental issues and encourage the volunteers to take action One of our main goals for the next few years is to contribute to a nation-wide project aiming at cleaning up the Icelandic coastline. SEEDS works along and supports the Icelandic ministry for Environment and Natural Resources, the Icelandic Environmental organisation Landvernd, the Environmental Agency of Iceland, Umhverfisstofnun and other partners in order to draw attention to the issues of ocean pollution, plastic waste and to engage volunteers in cleaning up actions around the country. This camp will take place in Baixo Vouga Lagunar, in two areas of the Estarreja municipality, both of high ecological and social value. BioRia is a network of nature trails, a paradise for birdwatching, integrated in a Natura 2000 site. In Canelas, the LUSITANICA project has been running since 2016, aiming to convert a degraded area into a model forest for nature conservation and fire prevention, as well as to rebuild heritage buildings: an abandoned water mill and a historic fountain ( Fonte dos Namoricos ) which is very degraded. It is an area much cherished by the population, but it requires a major intervention to return to being the social dynamic pole it was in the past. This project integrates environmental and social interventions promoting sustainability as a whole.
Location: Canelas (https://goo.gl/maps/VZxXRCd3GwdwgmD7A )Canelas is also a rural area but easily accessible by train. It is also 15 minutes from Aveiro city by train.
Participants will sleep in a shared sports complex in Estarreja with beds, separated by gender. The complex has a sports locker room with hot water showers also separated by gender. The organization will provide breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Lunches and dinners are prepared/cooked by the municipalitys staff and served in a canteen, but some lunches will be served in the field (sandwiches, fruit, etc.). Vegetarian/vegan meals are an option.
Participants have to bring their own towels and hygiene products. Participants can also bring typical food items/beverages from their country for the international cultural dinner and a presentation about the nature of your region. It is also important to bring working clothes and shs, sunscreen and hat.
