Do you want to get involved in a project and feel useful for the protection of nature? This is a project that takes place on a departmental site where nature lovers like to go for a walk, to find peace and serenity. Some interpretation trails will allow you to become familiar with the flora and fauna. This place is dedicated to welcoming the public, young and old, but also hosts an agropastoral project. Sheep and wild boar will be at your side. You will be offered the opportunity to carry out various landscaping projects to maintain this exceptional site. You can create wooden games, make benches, build picnic tables and maintain some of the footpaths.
The Herault department is leading an ambitious and voluntary land policy to protect sensitive natural areas. By acquiring certain plots of land, it allows them to be preserved as part of the compensation measures. This estate welcomes a shepherd and his sheep all year round. It also welcomes discovery classes who wish to learn about ecology and education in the environment and sustainable development. You will be charmed by the estate and the surrounding nature. This is the eighth consecutive year of partnership with the departmental council de l'Herault.
The departmental domaine de Roussieres is located in the Herault region in the village of Viols-en-Laval, north of Montpellier. Located near an exceptional archaeological site (Cambous is the oldest known archaeological site in France), it is also not far from the river and villages with a remarkable historical heritage. You can also discover the village of St Guilhem le Desert on the route of St Jacques de Compostelle, or take advantage of the outdoor activities available near the estate.
You will be accommodated on the departmental estate. Sleeping in individual tents (bring your own sleeping bag and duvet). A marquee will be set up to accommodate the collective life. There are permanent sanitary facilities on the domain. You will share the various collective tasks and prepare meals together. A budget will be allocated to the staff and you will take part in the shopping and the preparation of the meals, favouring healthy and local products. Please note that this is an isolated environment in the middle of nature, with no Wi-Fi or washing machine! Make sure to bring enough clothes with you.
The meeting point is set at the VIOLS-EN-LAVAL “PEYRE CANES'' bus stop, on the 17th of July in the late afternoon. The exact time of the meeting will be communicated with the infosheet, sent at the latest 4 weeks before the beginning of the work. To reach VIOLS-EN-LAVAL, you will have to go to MONTPELLIER. From MONTPELLIER Saint-Roch train station, you will have to take the tramway line 1, towards mosson, to the OCCITANIE tramway stop (about 20 minutes’ journey). Then from the OCCITANIE tramway stop, you can take bus 608 to the VIOLS-EN-LAVAL “PEYRE CANES” bus stop (45 minutes’ journey). More information about the tramway: https://www.tam-voyages.com/index.asp More info for the buses: https://www.herault-transport.fr/ If possible, please consider using low-carbon transportation (train and bus rather than aeroplane) for a sustainable international workcamp. The trains are open to booking about 4 months before the departure dates, accessible on the following website:https://www.sncf-connect.com/en-en/ If you are coming first by plane, remember that you will need some time to commute from the airport to the train station, therefore we recommend that you arrive early enough for you not to rush and have a stress free travel.
Remember to bring gloves, clothes and closed shoes for the work. Also remember to bring your sleeping bag, sleeping mattress, swimsuit and towel. There is a possibility of heat waves at this time of year. Bring sunglasses, a cap (or similar) and at least SPF 30 sunscreen. The environment is isolated, for nature lovers! This camp allows volunteers to learn about global and local environmental issues through non-formal educational activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits, as well as to contribute directly to environmental protection by joining outdoor coastal cleanup tasks in the shores and beaches. Additional work will be undertaken in the area of our accommodation such as removing old fences dangerous to wildlife and visitors, as well as helping with renovation and maintenance of the house. We may also be marking some walking paths and, depending on the advance of the mentioned tasks, volunteers might do some forestry tasks in a small forest planted in the area, like trimming the vegetation or planting some trees. This camp combines learning, sharing, hands-on work and fun. No previous experience is needed. Volunteers should prepare to share environmental issues from their countries and be ready to spend time outdoors, walking during the cleanups. Volunteers should be ready to adapt and be flexible with the work and free-time schedule, as depending on the weather, we may not be able to perform some of the planned activities.
The Awareness, Engagement and Action project is part of a series of camps organised by SEEDS in cooperation with different partners, where we try to raise awareness about current environmental issues and encourage the volunteers to take action One of our main goals for the next few years is to contribute to a nation-wide project aiming at cleaning up the Icelandic coastline. SEEDS works along and supports the Icelandic ministry for Environment and Natural Resources, the Icelandic Environmental organisation Landvernd, the Environmental Agency of Iceland, Umhverfisstofnun and other partners in order to draw attention to the issues of ocean pollution, plastic waste and to engage volunteers in cleaning up actions around the country.
The accommodation is located 1 hour drive south-east from Reykjavik. The house serves as an environmental-educational centre where visitors can have a look at an extensive stone and stuffed animal collection. The house sits under Ingolfsfjall, The Mountain of Ingolfur, with a view to Eyjafjallajokull where the volcanic eruptions started in March and April 2010. The place is registered as natural Icelandic heritage; the nature, vegetation and birdlife is rich in variety and quantity. The volunteers can enjoy outdoor activities in a peaceful and beautiful location with a small stream and a pond nearby. Hiking trails with maps about cultural heritage can be found spread around the area, which is a popular attraction among foreign and local visitors. The nearest town, Selfoss, only 10 minutes-drive away with 6500 inhabitants, is a centre of commerce and small industries where you find a geothermal swimming pool, shops, museums, cafes and bars.
SEEDS volunteers will stay in an old farm which has been transformed into an environmental-education centre. The facilities are basic with a kitchen, shower, and a washing machine. Volunteers will sleep in shared rooms, up to 6 people per room. Please bring your own sleeping bag.Volunteers will receive food supplies and will be in charge of cooking and cleaning. Please note the food SEEDS provides will be vegetarian. Remember to bring some traditional/typical food, drinks, recipes, music, games or movies from your country for the intercultural evening. Please be aware some items or ingredients may be expensive in Iceland and you will need to buy them yourselves or bring them from your country.

These cleanup tasks may be arranged in partnership with the above mentioned organizations or organized solely by SEEDS. We aim to also involve the local community, so some of our events may be open to the public. We hope participants will learn how to plan and do their own trash hunting projects back at home. This project is based on similar activities around the world, where outstanding results have been achieved with volunteers. One of the two options below is also included in this camp as a hands-on volunteering activity day:A day trip combining a visit to the Hellisheioi geothermal power plant, a trash hunt in the area; and the Hot River Hike, a hike up a valley filled with hot springs where one can bathe. Join us in Autrêches to participate in an exciting project focused on preserving the natural and built heritage within an innovation hub. During this project at l’Hermitage, our mission will be to renovate and rebuild a large wooden/earthen staircase, while also carrying out minor masonry renovation on the first steps and installing a remarkable handrail made from reclaimed wood. Additionally, we will contribute to environmental preservation by constructing shelters for wildlife using pallet wood, as well as cleaning and rehabilitating various natural sites on the premises. This will also be an opportunity to collaborate with local youth and other organisations present on site, thereby strengthening community ties and the spirit of solidarity. Join us for this rewarding and engaging experience in Autrèches, where every action counts towards preserving our heritage and environment.
The hermitage portrays a place of great historical richness and strategic importance, now transformed into a true rural innovation hub. Located in the heart of a lush green hill steeped in history, it embodies the testimony of a crucial frontline during the First World War, as well as a remarkable medical innovation center in the 1950s. Building on this heritage, a new project is emerging, aiming to breathe new life into this iconic venue. The proposal to create a staircase on the site to establish a common and more accessible hiking space is both relevant and inspiring. It aligns perfectly with our shared vision focused on environmental respect and strengthening connections between individuals and their territory. This initiative not only promises to preserve the Hermitage but also to transform it into a dynamic hub for exchange and gathering, offering unique opportunities for community engagement and connection with local heritage.
Autrêches (750 inhabitants) is located in the department of Oise, in the Picardie region. A small enclave of Oise within the department of Aisne, it is a village composed of several hamlets. The region boasts a rich historical heritage that you can explore nearby: The Palace of Compiègne, the cathedrals of Soissons, and the Château de Pierrefonds, among others. The Hermitage is a community hub welcoming various actors to its premises. Among them is an associative café/bar, where intercultural activities and exchanges are scheduled. These include a large international karaoke night, a visit to the market garden farm, and various concerts throughout the week. More information on the city's website: https://www.hermitagelelab.com/activites/
You will be accommodated in individual tents on the Hermitage park, and will have access to two bungalows equipped with toilets, showers, and a kitchen. The living area will be under a large marquee in the middle of the forest. The group will be sharing the cleaning chores and preparing meals together, and you will participate as well in the grocery shopping and in the preparation of meals, prioritising products from the market and local producers.
Remember to bring work clothes for the work site as well as closed shoes. As the accommodation is under tents, remember to bring your sleeping bag as well as a sleeping mat or a camping mattress for more comfort. Don't forget your bathing suit in case you have the opportunity to go swimming! You can also bring back specialties from your country, photos, musical instruments, in short what you like and want to share on this site, either with the local population or with the group. Foreigners belonging to the European Union must bring with them a personal EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), and everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate. If health issues arise on the project, volunteers will have to pay for it, and will then be reimbursed once back in their home country.
We will meet up at SOISSONS train station on 19/07 at the end of the day. The exact time of the meeting will be communicated with the roadmap, sent at the latest 4 weeks before the beginning of the work. From PARIS, regular trains are leaving from Gare du Nord train station towards SOISSONS. The ride lasts for about 60 minutes. The trains are open to booking about 4 months before the departure dates, available on the following website: https://www.sncf-connect.com/en-en/ The last day (03/08) is departure day, which means you can leave anytime in the morning.

The work will be done around and in the village of Slatinka and in the city park in Zvolen. The volunteers will help with cleaning the area in Slatinka: cutting the grass, taking care of the trees. Part of the help will be mapping and cleaning of wells and springs and maintenance of the new memorial site on the site of the demolished birthplace of the writer Jan Beno. The working hours are from Monday to Friday divided as follows: 4 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. There are no special skills required. By participating to this project you contribute to protecting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems (UN SDG 15).
The Slatinka Association was established in 1993 as a reaction to the construction of the Slatinka water dam on the Slatina River. The association’s mission is to work at the basin of the Slatina River, to protect the environment and preserve natural areas while spreading consciousness of the project’s effects on nature. One of their main aims is to bring life back to the village of Slatinka, since many people had to leave due to the dam construction. Workcamps like this one have been organized in Slatinka since 2011.
Slatinka is a little village near Zvolen located in the Central part of Slovakia. The village is surrounded by beautiful nature with many touristic routes and hiking opportunities. The volunteers may visit Zvolen, where they will find a castle, a historical center and other interesting sites.
Volunteers will stay at a local school called the Eco Center. The center has an outdoor shower that requires participants to manually heat the water before each shower, and the toilets are dry (outhouses). There will not be access to running water, so water will be delivered or taken from a well pump for showers. Drinkable water will be provided by the local partner. On-site access to electricity and mobile signal is available. There are two bedrooms with mattresses, but a sleeping bag is required. Meals will be prepared by the volunteers themselves. Volunteers will be divided in the kitchen teams and cook together; the groceries will be provided. The food will be mostly vegetarian.
Bring a sleeping bag, working clothes, warm clothes, cap, raincoat, strong boots, swimming suit, headlamp and a smile on your lips :) You can also bring some games from your country.
Bus station in Zvolen, on 19.07.2024 around 5 pm. More info will be provided to accepted volunteers in the infosheet sent at least 4 weeks before the start of the workcamp.
Study Part: The workcamp will have a rich environmental study part as the local partner is an ecologically-focused organization. Volunteers will learn about environmental protection efforts in Slovakia and all the issues related to the dam construction. Participants will also learn about the history of Slatinka and Zvolen. The volunteers will prepare the "Feast of cultures" - an international food evening. Part of the program is “volunteering footprint” workshop and an educational workshop about current events in Europe. Our camps will follow the rules of Sustainability campaign. Attention: The camp is for nature and ecology lovers! Mostly vegetarian food and eco camp! For more info and pictures about the project please see: www.slatinka.sk. Our workcamp groups have been actively involved in nature conservation and forest maintenance work in Wolfsburg's city forest for 14 years now! Of course we will be celebrating with you! The city forest is a habitat for many (rare) plant and animal species and a recreational area for people who jog, bike, hike or simply enjoy nature there. Due to climate change, many plants and animals are now endangered and the task of the forestry team is to protect the forest and preserve the flora and fauna for the future. You will support the forest rangers in a variety of activities in the areas of nature conservation, forest maintenance and the preservation of recreational areas for forest visitors. These tasks include the removal of non-native plants, the care of young trees and the clearing of watercourses and forest paths. You will also gain an insight into the diverse tasks of a forest ranger's office and the forest ecosystem.
