Maintain SATOYAMA forest to keep biodiversity and encourage sustainable life!
In the morning, volunteers will work in the forest to maintain. Cutting woods, pealing skins, cutting bamboos, sometimes chopping firewood. In the afternoon, volunteers will have activities such as discussion about environmental issues, bamboo craft, having a lecture about SATOYAMA. Volunteers will get knowledge of conservation work in a forest.
This project is actively working for SDG 15 (Life on Land), organized together with local NPOs, ‘Association to protect nature in Tondabayashi’ and ‘Hamuro club’ since 1999. 67% of land in Japan is covered with forest and 40% of them is human-made planted forest called SATOYAMA, where people used to receive the benefit to live such as food and resources. SATOYAMA needs to be maintained its biodiversity and to keep water adjustment function. Our ancestors had protected and utilized the forest in an ecological and sustainable way, which has been neglected by modernization. We try to revive it with global voluntary power! Most of the members of the local organization are aged 50-70 so they expect our participation of youth and foreign vols. to vitalize the activities both mentally and physically.
Takitani fudo, Tondabayashi city in Osaka. 60 km south of Osaka city Exchange parties, experiencing Japanese culture etc.
Simple local community house. Meals will be cooked by volunteers by turns. Volunteers will take a bath to go to hot spring everyday.

Would you like to go on a camp with various activities in the forest? Then you've come to the right place! In the municipality of Heidenrod, your help is needed for many different tasks: Together with the foresters, you will build a wooden bridge and clean the forest of rubbish. A tree planting campaign is also planned, but because we do not yet know how dry it will be in summer 2024, the trees will be ordered, but it is not certain whether this task can be carried out: planting different tree species, for which the planting areas must also be prepared with brushwood piles. The newly planted Douglas firs (tree species) must be protected from deer, for this you must check, repair and renew the protection. You will also repair existing gates. Unfortunately, there are also many dead spruces (tree species), which you have to remove and from the remaining wood and brushwood you will build piles of rice, which are very important for the protection of birds and small animals. Along the forest edges of the Mehrbach meadows, you will remove barbed wire remnants for animal and environmental protection reasons. The work in the forest is always very dependent on the weather, so the work can still change before the camp starts. .
The ijgd has been organising volunteer service programmes since 1949. We are an independent, non-profit association for international youth work, a recognised independent youth welfare organisation, and one of the largest and oldest workcamp organisations in Germany. Each year, we assist around 5,000 young people into volunteer work in Germany and abroad. We give them the opportunity to be creative, act in solidarity, take responsibility for themselves, and discover their own true potential and strengths. Our principles: Ecological learning, voluntary contribution, self-organisation, social development, intercultural learning, gender equality, anti-racism/anti-discrimination and political education. In this workcamp, you will participate in the center's life and in diverse aspects: community (cook, washing, planning...), intercultural exchanges (locals and association's volunteers encounter)... The workcamp's purpose is to raise awareness over sustainable development. Caring the garden (seeding, transplanting, hoeing, watering, picking, processing). Upkeep of compost, phytosanitary pool, henhouse, insect-house and bamboo canopy.
Sustainable development, like permanent agriculture, is rooted in the organization's values and its transversal in our actions. Thus, "Maison des Bateleurs-Solidarités Jeunesses" began creating an environment hub: phytosanitary tank, dry toilets, compost, eco garden, use of natural resources are just examples.
Montendre, Charente-Maritime, 75 Km from the sea, between Bordeaux and Angoulême. Leisure Activities: Tour of the region will be collectively planned as you wish: city visits, ocean, museums or the Forest House... These cleanup tasks may be arranged in partnership with the above mentioned organisations or organised solely by SEEDS. We aim to also involve the local community, so some of our events may be open to the public. We hope participants will learn how to plan and do their own trash hunting projects back at home. This project is based on similar activities around the world, where outstanding results have been achieved with volunteers. One of the two options below is also included in this camp as a hands-on volunteering activity day:A day trip combining a visit to the HellisheiE(i geothermal power plant, a trash hunt in the area; and the Hot River Hike, a hike up a valley filled with hot springs where one can bathe. A day trip to the Reykjanes peninsula, combined with a coastal cleanup in the area. All the activities are dependent on conditions such as weather and availability of our partners. This camp combines learning, sharing, hands-on work and fun. No previous experience is needed. Volunteers should prepare to share environmental issues from their countries and be ready to spend time outdoors, walk medium distances during the cleanups, as during other activities and sightseeing. As a part of the project happens outdoors, volunteers should be ready to adapt and be flexible with the work and free-time schedule, as depending on the changeable weather, we may not be able to perform some of the activities (as) planned.
The Environmentally Aware and Trash Hunting project is part of a series of camps organised by SEEDS in cooperation with different partners. SEEDS works with and supports the Icelandic ministry for Environment and Natural Resources on a project to clean up the Icelandic coastline; the Blue Army, an organisation dedicated to the cause of coast cleaning; Whales of Iceland, an exhibition of life size models of whales and porpoises aiming at educating about their lives and human impact on their existence; SORPA, the organisation in charge of waste collection and management in the Reykjavik area and other local stakeholders.

This camp allows volunteers to learn about global and local environmental issues through non-formal educational activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits, as well as to contribute directly to environmental protection by joining outdoor coastal cleanup tasks in the shores and beaches. Additional work will be undertaken in the area of our accommodation such as removing old fences dangerous to wildlife and visitors, as well as helping with renovation and maintenance of the house. We may also be marking some walking paths and, depending on the advance of the mentioned tasks, volunteers might do some forestry tasks in a small forest planted in the area, like trimming the vegetation or planting some trees. This camp combines learning, sharing, hands-on work and fun. No previous experience is needed. Volunteers should prepare to share environmental issues from their countries and be ready to spend time outdoors, walking during the cleanups. The Awareness, Engagement and amp; Action project is part of a series of camps organised by SEEDS in cooperation with different partners, where we try to raise awareness about current environmental issues and encourage the volunteers to take action One of our main goals for the next few years is to contribute to a nation-wide project aiming at cleaning up the Icelandic coastline. SEEDS works along and supports the Icelandic ministry for Environment and Natural Resources, the Icelandic Environmental organisation Landvernd, the Environmental Agency of Iceland, Umhverfisstofnun and other partners in order to draw attention to the issues of ocean pollution, plastic waste and to engage volunteers in cleaning up actions around the country.
The accommodation is located 1 hour drive south-east from ReykjavEk. The house serves as an environmental-educational centre where visitors can have a look at an extensive stone and stuffed animal collection. The house sits under IngElfsfjall, The Mountain of IngElfur, with a view to EyjafjallajEkull where the volcanic eruptions started in March and April 2010. The place is registered as natural Icelandic heritage; the nature, vegetation and birdlife is rich in variety and quantity. The volunteers can enjoy outdoor activities in a peaceful and beautiful location with a small stream and a pond nearby. Hiking trails with maps about cultural heritage can be found spread around the area, which is a popular attraction among foreign and local visitors. The nearest town, Selfoss, only 10 minutes-drive away with 6500 inhabitants, is a centre of commerce and small industries where you find a geothermal swimming pool, shops, museums, cafEs and bars.
SEEDS volunteers will stay in an old farm which has been transformed into an environmental-education centre. The facilities are basic with a kitchen, shower, and a washing machine. Support the educational centre Kell am See, an important place for youth work in the whole area of Trier, by doing environmental and maintenance works! The educational centre is public, non-profit and offers the opportunity for youth groups, associations and schools to spend some days or weeks here, running a seminar or some other projects. One focus of the offer is on environmental education and outdoor activities. You will be working to take care and maintain the green areas around the regional education centre. Your tasks will include: • cutting the grass and bushes; • renovating/taking care of the playground and its big swing, the low rope course, the tree houses and the sports grounds; • tending the herbs garden and the insect hotel; • building wooden benches; • cleaning the grounds of the centre. In addition, you will continue to upgrade the outdoor area pedagogically and create new offers. One of the workcamps set up an outdoor kitchen with pizza oven, which is used for different educational actions with youngsters.
Kell am See is a touristic village not far from Trier, the oldest German city. The regional youth department runs an educational centre in this village, which offers different environmental educational activities for youth groups and school classes. Also, school classes or youth associations can come here for several days and run own seminars or trainings. The centre was just renovated a couple of years ago and different new outdoor and training facilities were installed. For them it is important to get the support of international volunteer for their centre but at the same time they share the aims of international volunteering and want to offer a nice opportunity to you. By participating in this project, you are supporting education on environmental issues (UN SDG 4 and 13).
Kell am See is a village 30 km from Trier, surrounded by beautiful landscapes. The area is well known for cycling, hiking and other ways of outdoor activities. In Kell, there is a holiday resort, which offers more than 200 holiday bungalows next to a lake (close to the educational centre). The area is not just appreciated by tourists: People from the area also come here for cycling (there is a 45 km cycling path on a former railway roadbed) or to spend a nice day outside. In addition, the region offers plenty of historic sites (castles, museums….). You will get the opportunity to come in contact with local associations, e.g. the local voluntary fire brigade. Since public transport is poor, the number of excursions will be limited but you will for sure visit Trier, famous for its Roman sites, its cathedral and for being the birth place of Karl-Marx.
You will stay in five several wooden tepees for max. five persons each. It is really great to stay here surrounded by pure nature, with the campfire in the middle of the circle of tepees. In the centre you will have your own kitchen including a dish-washer, a living room and sanitary facilities. For your free time you will find perfect conditions: billiard, plenty of outdoor facilities (campfire, basketball, football, volleyball…). Please be aware that the tepees have beds and electricity but no heating, so it might be cold at night. Bring a warm sleeping bag! In the different facilities of the centre as the kitchen and the living room, there is heating. Wifi is available. Your group of volunteers will be responsible for grocery shopping and cooking together. The food will be bought with the camp budget and everybody will take turns for cooking, washing the dishes and cleaning. In order to reduce our carbon footprint on the planet, we encourage volunteers to reduce meat and try more sustainable dishes.
You will be picked up from the bus stop in Kell am See. There is the bus No. 230 from Trier to Kell am See every 2 hours. Please inform your campleader about your arrival time on Sep 15. You can check for connections from anywhere to Kell am See on: www.bahn.com/en.

The tasks will be mowing andcollecting the grass. Additionally, the participants of the project will support the work on renovations on the Castle grounds. The hilly massive around Lohra Castle is listed as National Nature Reserve. Open Houses supports the Reserve since several years with volunteering activities. In a forest near the Castle the participants will remove trees and bushes which are not corresponding with the protection aims in order to clean the paths and make them enjoyable again. They will also will collect the wood remaining after maintenance works, load it on a truck, unload it at the castle and split and stack it for wintertime or for the fireplace. Besides that, the volunteers will continue the maintenance of the green area at the castle. In addition, in the later part of the summer, they will support the recollection, assortment, splitting and storage of wood to prepare the castle for the harsh winter months. PARTICIPATION TERMS Participants have to take part for the whole time of the project. The working part consists in six hours per day. Be informed, that during all projects the work will take place also on rainy and cold days and be prepared for that.
Open Houses – not empty buildings, but places with visible and invisible traces of history, places which have grown and decayed over the centuries, places which were shaped by those people who lived there long ago as well those who left only yesterday – places which will be shaped by those who live there or who come as a guest. Open Houses – rooms which want to be filled with dreams and ideas, with meetings and exchange, by people of different backgrounds, different cultures, different generations and different ideas and visions. The history of Open Houses Network dates back to the mid-1980s, when a group of young people started to restore village churches in East Germany in voluntary work to protect them from decay. The engagement for these buildings united people who enjoyed the freedom these activities provided and who filled these rooms with life again in ways which by far exceed the craftsmen's work done – through exhibitions, concerts, making music together or just sitting by the camp fire. Meanwhile, rooms free of political and ideological pressure are no longer urgently required; however, places have become rare where people can meet without commercial pressure, free of bureaucracy and institutionalism, free of nepotism and the exclusion which it produces. What should be easy – to go somewhere in order to meet people and to work together – has become difficult. The tightrope walk between, on the one hand, public activities in a monetary and functional sense, and the retreat into private life on the other, is very difficult, and it requires a lot of power and permanent efforts to tackle red tape and financial restrictions. Free spaces are less and less understood as common property, and are permanently being cut back. The idea of public property seems to have gone out of fashion, and places of common responsible work have become rare. Open Houses Network tries to create and protect such spaces. In this process, we do not want to be the doers, but be people who have a vision, who want to initiate something, but who also are aware of depending on the co-operation of others. We understand our projects and events as offers – as offers to create space for commitment, for changes, for meetings.
LOCATION: Next towns: Bleicherode (6 km), Nordhausen (20 km), Erfurt (75 km) Region: Thuringia Lohra Castle is situated in the heart of Germany in Northern Thuringia. The castle, which is surrounded by a scenic hilly landscape, is located on the edge of a natural reserve area. Being one of the largest castles in Thuringia, the history of castle Lohra begins in the Middle Ages. Its architectural styles which have been preserved in the structures of the ensemble attest to a prolonged period of occupation and historical evolution up until today. The castle is more than thousand years old, and it is a relic of German medieval past that is still standing at the heart of a region through which the story of the German nation has been written. Today, it includes twenty buildings from different time periods, showcasing this historical evolution to the enchantment of visitors and heritage enthusiasts: medieval fortifications, remnants of a tower from the 11th century, a Romanesque double-floored chapel, a manor house from the Renaissance period as well as stables and granaries from the 19th and the early 20th centuries. The ensemble is situated in the centre of a beautiful forest. LEISURE TIME The camp places are mostly situated in small villages in rural areas, so the participants should not expect busy places and normal city activities for the leisure time during the working days. Small trips in walking distance are possible in the afternoon. On the weekends it is possible to organise an excursion to nearby cities or to have other leisure activities.
ACCOMMODATION: shared rooms with 2 – 5 beds in 3 guest houses, warm shower (limited hot water), 1 camp kitchen (cold water), coal-burning stoves FOOD: The meals will be prepared together as they are part of the community life, what means that every participant will be responsible for the meal at least once during its stay. So, it would be very nice if the participants could bring typical recipes from home in order to introduce each other to the preparation of food from all over the world.
WHAT TO BRING Usually, average temperatures in Germany during the summer time are about 20o C to 30o C; during the night it will get colder. It is possible that there may be two weeks of non-stop sunshine, but every day rain is not impossible either. In September and October, it's about 8o C to 18o C. Passport Insurance Certificates (EU-members should bring their European Health Insurance Card; those which have an individual travel insurance should bring the certificate) sleeping bag stable work boots, really appropriate for practical work appropriate clothes, waterproof coat mosquito protection lotion dictionary typical recipes, sweets, music, instruments and games from the participants' home country for group activities
