No experience is necessary as new volunteers are teamed up with students and experienced volunteers for hands on learning. Volunteer opportunities range from field excavations to basic maintenance and restoration tasks. This year we will be opening test excavations in the field and assisting with historic preservation tasks in early 20th century buildings, including the museum. The workday is from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. The work is done in a friendly and supportive environment. Please understand that this is hard physical labor and includes digging with a trowel or shovel, screening soil, carrying buckets of dirt, and some other hand tool use. Each person will work at their own pace according to their physical condition. The temperature can be quite hot or cool and rainy. BRING work gloves, work shoes and clothing, including a warm coat or sweatshirt, sun hat, rain coat, long sleeve shirts and pants as there will be mosquitoes. The work site can be dirty and muddy so multiple sets of work clothes are a good idea. The local mud is a very red color, which can be difficult to remove from clothing. Sunscreen and bug spray will be provided. Study Themes: History and contemporaneous events (what was happening around the world while people lived at the site). Geology – why people chose to mine at this particular site. Immigration – where the mining community was from, and what challenges resulted from such a diversity of origins.
SHAPPS is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the historic and prehistoric resources at Sunrise, WY, and to providing experiential education opportunities for students of all ages. Come and enjoy the warm welcome of the inhabitants of a small town at the seaside! The town council of Plouguerneau welcomes you for its second international workcamp where you will help to restore its built heritage, in the heart of its countryside. An opportunity to experience the local culture and to make unforgettable inter-generational encounters. In addition to participating in the reconstruction, you will discover the history of the town! You will restore a washhouse, using traditional masonry techniques. The intervention will focus on the masonry and the restoration of the church.
Plouguerneau is a small rural town of about 6500 inhabitants located on the Brittany coast. It is a charming village, with a few lighthouses near the sea. This first workcamp allows it to restore its local heritage. The inhabitants are delighted to see people from all countries coming to help reconstruct their history.
Plouguerneau (around 6500 inhabitants) is located in the county of “Finistere”. There are several hiking trails around the town. You will be able to go on a trip to the sea or to do leisure activities in the town of Brest (around 140 000 inhabitants), only 25 km from Plouguerneau. You will also be able to share convivial moments with the inhabitants and the young people of the town.
You will sleep in tents near the sports field (please bring your sleeping mat and a warm sleeping bag). The group activities and meals will take place closeby in a room made available to the group. The group will be sharing the cleaning chores and preparing meals together. The budget will be allocated to the camp leaders and you will participate in the shopping and the preparation of meals with products from the market and local producers, (if possible).
Foreigners belonging to the European Union must bring with them a personal EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), and everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate. If health issues happen on the project, volunteers will have to pay for it, and will then be reimbursed once back in their home country.
The meeting point is scheduled at BREST train station on the 05/07 at the end of the afternoon. The exact meeting time will be given with the infosheet which will be sent at the latest 4 weeks before the start of the workcamp. From PARIS, you can take the train from Montparnasse train station, regular departures are scheduled throughout the day. The trip is about 3 hours long. If you are coming first by plane, remember that you will need some time to commute from the airport to the train station, therefore we recommend that you arrive early enough for you not to rush and have a stress free travel. The trains are open to booking about 4 months before the departure dates, accessible on the following website: https://www.sncf-connect.com/en-en/
You will have to bring warm clothes (trousers, sweater, socks, closed shoes, rain clothes) and light ones (skirts or shorts, t-shirts, open shoes) because the weather can change very suddenly in Brittany. You can literally experience all four seasons in one day! Please also take with you working clothes, gloves and shoes in addition to your swimsuit. Bring a warm sleeping bag and an insulated camping mat as nights are sometimes fresh and wet. On the last day (17/07), the departure time is usually set in the morning.

For some years now, volunteer workcamps have been helping with excavation work on site in cooperation with archaeologists. Remains of buildings, roads and paths as well as everyday objects and building and barrier material have already been recovered. We are now planning to build a modern educational trail on the site, which visitors can use to learn about the history of the camp. This requires further important archaeological work, e.g. uncovering parts of the former camp road and the site of a camp kitchen, as well as clearing and cutting free overgrown building sites and paths. The work will be carried out under the expert guidance of at least one archaeologist. The Ehrenhain Zeithain memorial commemorates the at least 25,000 people who were victims of malnutrition and catastrophic conditions in the Wehrmacht prisoner of war camp from 1941 to 1945. As part of the German war of extermination against the Soviet Union, a prisoner of war camp was set up in Zeithain in 1941. Initially, only Soviet soldiers from the Red Army were detained in the camp. At the time, Ukrainian and Russian soldiers fought together in the Red Army. Up to 30,000 of them died due to inhumane living conditions. From February 1943, the camp served as a central military hospital for prisoners of war. During this period, prisoners from other nations also arrived. Italian soldiers represented a large group. The majority of them also died due to insufficient food and poor medical care. The dead were buried in five cemeteries in the municipality of Zeithain. The memorial is located in one of the cemeteries. There is an exhibition and name plaques commemorating the victims of the camp. The area of the POW camp was completely cleared after 1945. The huge 66-hectare site is now part of the Gohrischheide nature reserve and is an uncultivated natural landscape. The aim of this workcamp is to give young people the opportunity to become familiar with archaeological challenges by researching historical heritage, but also to acquire knowledge about forms of remembrance work.
The ijgd has been organising volunteer service programmes since 1949. We are an independent, non-profit association for international youth work, a recognised independent youth welfare organisation, and one of the largest and oldest workcamp organisations in Germany. Each year, we assist around 5,000 young people into volunteer work in Germany and abroad. We give them the opportunity to be creative, act in solidarity, take responsibility for themselves, and discover their own true potential and strengths. Our principles Ecological learning, voluntary contribution, self-organisation, social development, intercultural learning, gender equality, anti-racism/anti-discrimination and political education. Follow us on Instagram ijgd_workcamps Facebook @ijgd.workcamps
The camp area and the municipality of Zeithain are located in a rural landscape surrounded by the river Elbe and the meadows. Zeithain is very centrally located in the triangle between the major cities of Berlin, Leipzig and Dresden. All cities can be reached by public transport in around one hour. XIV century fortress close to Belgrade awaits volunteers to find out the mysterious building in the Vojvodina planes. Volunteers will work on the conservation of the fortress together with the archeologist as well as some digging work. Also, they will participate in the cleaning of the surrounding areas from invasive plants and trash.
Association "Zeleni pogled" from Kupinovo was registered on June 2, 2015. The main topics we deal with are volunteerism, environmental protection and preservation of cultural heritage. Young Researchers of Serbia (YRS) was founded in 1976. Our main aims are environmental protection and education, promotion of sustainable development, work with young people in an international context, promotion of scientific creativity and voluntarism and its values. Voluntary Service of Serbia is a volunteer exchange service center founded in 1990 as one of the sectors of YRS.
Kupinovo is a village located in the municipality of Pećinci, Serbia. As of 2011 census, the village has 1,866 inhabitants. It is near the famous biodiversity area, the Obedska bara. Kupinovo is a place rich in cultural and historical sights. The most interesting are: Kupinik Fortress, a medieval fortification from the 14th century, the Church of Saint Luke from the half of the 15th century, the Church of Mother Angelina from the 16th century, the ethno complex with objects of folk architecture. You will be located on the premise of the special nature reserve "Obedska bara" and very close to Sava river, so that will give you a lot of ground to explore.
The volunteers will stay in the two renovated ethno houses in Kupinovo, located in Ethno Park (https://www.turizampecinci.rs/туристичке-атракције/етно-парк-купиново/). The food will be prepared together with the host from the groceries that will be provided.
The easiest way to get to Kupinovo is from Belgrade (30 km). The bus leaves from the main station in Belgrade. More details will be provided in the Infosheet about the meeting point.
