Commit yourself to the heritage of Châteaudouble, a small and typical mediaeval village. For nature and history lovers! The village inaugurated last year an open-air green theatre on an esplanade overlooking the village and its listed monuments with a magnificent unobstructed view. The place will host artists, concerts and many other events for the inhabitants and tourists, participating in the dynamism of the village. The site being vast, several restoration works are planned to vary the pleasures! Your work will consist in restoring the dry-stone walls by sorting stones (salvage and purchased ones), cleaning the area (ground clearance) and constructing the area’s entrance.
Châteaudouble is a mediaeval village with a very rich heritage and sumptuous monuments, some of them being even listed. Very dynamic and invested in the development of its historical and natural heritage, several projects are currently undertaken by the village. This is a renewed partnership with the commune of Châteaudouble for the second year. Our current project is part of a development plan for the plateau of Sainte Anne, on the heights of the village, which became last year an open-air theatre with stone terraces and dressing rooms for artists in the middle of old cobblestone ways, dry-stone walls as well as an old chapel. Our work camp and your commitment will enable us to restore and enhance this magnificent site for the benefit of the population and tourists.
Like a real eagle's nest, overlooking the Nartuby gorges in the upper Var, Châteaudouble has retained its authentic mediaeval appearance. Châteaudouble takes its name from the presence of two castles in the Middle Ages, each of them located on a bank of the Nartuby. Only the remains of the Tower, a square keep, dating from the 12th century, which overlooks the village, still exist today. Perched on its narrow plateau, Châteaudouble is a village that invites you to discover its alleys, wander between the houses and climb up to the ruins of the castle, on the plateau of Sainte Anne. The village offers a wide range of leisure activities, including visits and walks, swimming in the rivers and gorges, kayaking in the gorges or at sea, hiking, local sports such as pétanque, and taking part in the various village festivities. In Châteaudouble, a village of 200 inhabitants, there are two bars and one concert a week in the summer. As the village is isolated with few public transport links, the vast majority of activities take place on site. Outings to the gorges and/or the sea can be organised.
You will be accommodated on site in individual tents with access to a building for communal living, toilets and meals. Handwashing of the laundry. Remember to bring your floor mat or air mattress and your duvet (very important!!). As we do not have a bathroom on site, we will install solar showers. The group will share the cleaning chores and prepare meals together. The budget will be allocated to the staff and you will participate in the grocery shopping and in the preparation of meals, prioritising products from the market and local producers.
Foreigners belonging to the European Union must bring with them a personal EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), and everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate. If health issues arise on the project, volunteers will have to pay for it, and then be reimbursed once back in their home country. This project is supported by the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) program for young people between 18 and 30. It is open to all volunteers that fit the ESC criteria. The participation to ESC volunteering teams is subjected to several principles and conditions, presented on the ESC webpage: https://europa.eu/youth/solidarity/mission_en - volunteers do not have to pay any fee (neither sending, nor participation fee) to attend the project and will receive financial support for their travel, according to a maximum amount established depending on their travel distance and upon the presentation of original tickets; - volunteers need to enrol in the PASS, the ESC Portal; then Concordia France will organise their matching, on the online system, with the volunteering project; - volunteers will receive pocket money, calculated on the basis of 6€/day, once they arrive at the project in France; - volunteers will have to complete a participation report, submitted online through the portal.
The meeting point is set at Les ARCS DRAGUIGNAN train station, at 5:00 PM CET on the 5th of July. An "on-demand" rural bus service operates in the area, linking Draguignan and Châteaudouble; the coordinators will contact you in the days leading up to the worksite with specific instructions on how to get to the worksite. From “PARIS Gare de Lyon” train station the journey by train to the ARCS DRAGUIGNAN lasts about 4 to 5 hours, make sure that you have enough time to have a stress free travel. Train reservations can be made about 4 months before departure on the SNCF website, link below: https://www.sncf-connect.com Whenever possible, use low-carbon transportation (train or bus, rather than airplane) for a responsible and sustainable international work site.
Remember to bring clothes and shoes for work and hiking. Nights can be cool, so bring a good warm duvet. To avoid mosquito bites, remember to bring mosquito repellent and loose, covering clothes for the evenings. As we are in an area where it can be very hot during the day, bring a hat or cap, sunglasses, sunscreen, a small backpack and water bottles. As the village is far from the meeting place and has no public transportation, it is imperative to be on time at the meeting point! For the public meals and the open house, you can bring a few specialties from home that are easy to carry with you. On the last day (19/07), the departure time is usually set in the morning.

The tasks will be mowing andcollecting the grass. Additionally, the participants of the project will support the work on renovations on the Castle grounds. The hilly massive around Lohra Castle is listed as National Nature Reserve. Open Houses supports the Reserve since several years with volunteering activities. In a forest near the Castle the participants will remove trees and bushes which are not corresponding with the protection aims in order to clean the paths and make them enjoyable again. They will also will collect the wood remaining after maintenance works, load it on a truck, unload it at the castle and split and stack it for wintertime or for the fireplace. Besides that, the volunteers will continue the maintenance of the green area at the castle. In addition, in the later part of the summer, they will support the recollection, assortment, splitting and storage of wood to prepare the castle for the harsh winter months. PARTICIPATION TERMS Participants have to take part for the whole time of the project. The working part consists in six hours per day. Be informed, that during all projects the work will take place also on rainy and cold days and be prepared for that.
Open Houses – not empty buildings, but places with visible and invisible traces of history, places which have grown and decayed over the centuries, places which were shaped by those people who lived there long ago as well those who left only yesterday – places which will be shaped by those who live there or who come as a guest. Open Houses – rooms which want to be filled with dreams and ideas, with meetings and exchange, by people of different backgrounds, different cultures, different generations and different ideas and visions. The history of Open Houses Network dates back to the mid-1980s, when a group of young people started to restore village churches in East Germany in voluntary work to protect them from decay. The engagement for these buildings united people who enjoyed the freedom these activities provided and who filled these rooms with life again in ways which by far exceed the craftsmen's work done – through exhibitions, concerts, making music together or just sitting by the camp fire. Meanwhile, rooms free of political and ideological pressure are no longer urgently required; however, places have become rare where people can meet without commercial pressure, free of bureaucracy and institutionalism, free of nepotism and the exclusion which it produces. What should be easy – to go somewhere in order to meet people and to work together – has become difficult. The tightrope walk between, on the one hand, public activities in a monetary and functional sense, and the retreat into private life on the other, is very difficult, and it requires a lot of power and permanent efforts to tackle red tape and financial restrictions. Free spaces are less and less understood as common property, and are permanently being cut back. The idea of public property seems to have gone out of fashion, and places of common responsible work have become rare. Open Houses Network tries to create and protect such spaces. In this process, we do not want to be the doers, but be people who have a vision, who want to initiate something, but who also are aware of depending on the co-operation of others. We understand our projects and events as offers – as offers to create space for commitment, for changes, for meetings.
LOCATION: Next towns: Bleicherode (6 km), Nordhausen (20 km), Erfurt (75 km) Region: Thuringia Lohra Castle is situated in the heart of Germany in Northern Thuringia. The castle, which is surrounded by a scenic hilly landscape, is located on the edge of a natural reserve area. Being one of the largest castles in Thuringia, the history of castle Lohra begins in the Middle Ages. Its architectural styles which have been preserved in the structures of the ensemble attest to a prolonged period of occupation and historical evolution up until today. The castle is more than thousand years old, and it is a relic of German medieval past that is still standing at the heart of a region through which the story of the German nation has been written. Today, it includes twenty buildings from different time periods, showcasing this historical evolution to the enchantment of visitors and heritage enthusiasts: medieval fortifications, remnants of a tower from the 11th century, a Romanesque double-floored chapel, a manor house from the Renaissance period as well as stables and granaries from the 19th and the early 20th centuries. The ensemble is situated in the centre of a beautiful forest. LEISURE TIME The camp places are mostly situated in small villages in rural areas, so the participants should not expect busy places and normal city activities for the leisure time during the working days. Small trips in walking distance are possible in the afternoon. On the weekends it is possible to organise an excursion to nearby cities or to have other leisure activities.
ACCOMMODATION: shared rooms with 2 – 5 beds in 3 guest houses, warm shower (limited hot water), 1 camp kitchen (cold water), coal-burning stoves FOOD: The meals will be prepared together as they are part of the community life, what means that every participant will be responsible for the meal at least once during its stay. In collaboration with a local NGO, "Youth for Smile," a youth organization, is embarking on an ambitious project to transform the abandoned former orphanage in Lauderi village into a vibrant non-formal education training centre. This workcamp activity aims to engage volunteers in revitalizing the surrounding area and the interior of the building, setting the stage for a future hub of learning and community development. The project activity will take place in Lauderi village, where the dormant training centre stands as a testament to untapped potential. This picturesque village provides the perfect backdrop for community-driven initiatives, and the youth organization envisions transforming the old orphanage into a lively educational space. Project Goals: Revitalizing the Park and Surrounding Area: Volunteers will work collaboratively to clean and rejuvenate the park surrounding the former orphanage. This includes clearing debris, landscaping, and creating a welcoming outdoor space for the future training centre. Interior Cleanup: In addition to the exterior, volunteers will venture inside the building to tackle the accumulated remnants of years of abandonment. This involves removing old and broken furniture, clothes, and other items that hinder the potential of the space. Community Engagement: The project aims to foster a sense of community among volunteers and local residents. Through shared efforts, participants will not only contribute to the physical transformation of the training centre but also build lasting connections with the community.

Non-formal Education: Providing young people with opportunities to acquire essential life skills, knowledge, and competencies through non-formal education. 3. Leisure Time Activities: Offering opportunities for young individuals to make good use of their leisure time in meaningful ways. 4. Information Access: Ensuring young people have access to relevant information for their developmental needs. To address the needs of youth with fewer opportunities, we implement outdoor education and adventure pedagogy through various non-formal education programs. Additionally, our international voluntary work camps program promotes intercultural learning, community development, and peace education. In low-populated areas, we conduct mobile youth work, providing essential youth services where municipalities may not cover them. Advocacy at the regional level is a crucial aspect of our work, advocating for the quality of youth work and the development of participatory youth policy. Furthermore, our active involvement in traditional folk and cultural events aims to introduce these aspects to the youth, preserving cultural heritage and fostering a sense of community. DIY workshops are organized to support young people in learning practical skills necessary for life. While the organization was established in 2005, we have grown to be a values-based youth association with a significant impact on local communities and the personal development of young individuals. Our commitment to creating, experiencing, and being together drives our efforts to empower the youth and contribute to the well-being of the broader community.

This work camp is for nature lovers, since the work will be mainly outdoors. There is a lot of work around the natural reserve “Upahl-Lenzen”. Since it’s not possible to use common agricultural techniques, volunteers have to do everything manually. More over every meadow around has to be cut and the grass have to be put aside. The aim of this project is to help to protect this unique reserve through your contribution. This project will be done in cooperation with the environmental agency of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
This project is organized by NiG e.V., a german non-profit and non-government organization. In this project we work together with the local agency for agriculture and environment.
Lohmen is a village in the middle of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and is surrounded by the nature reserve Upahl-Lenzen. It has about 850 inhabitants but also many possibilities for outdoor activities like a labyrinth, sports grounds and an archeological nature trail. There is a lake in walking distance where you can swim and also much nature to enjoy in general. Leisure time activities: Excursions (swimming, short trips) can be planned.
The volunteers will stay at the building of a former kindergarten. Food (also vegetarian/ vegan) is included, but meals have to be prepared by the volunteers. (we like to do international cooking days, so every nation cooks one typical/traditional meal for everyone) On the last weekend, we arrrange a trip to Rostock (next biggest city, directly at the sea) and stay in our office accomodation. There we have the opportunity, to either go the beach or into clubs and stuff like this :)
Please bring a sleeping bag, working clothes (gloves), a mattress pad (and good motivation :D).
BE CAREFUL! There are two different villages called "Lohmen" in Germany. The workcamp will be in that Lohmen between Guestrow and Goldberg in the region Mecklenburg Western Pomerania.
