The Serra do Courel is not free of pre-Roman remains and there are many examples of settlements distributed throughout its valleys. There are several remains of castros, for example that of Vilar, that of Seceda, Castro da Torre, Castro de Vilamor, also called castro da Pena do Castro. All of them were later Romanized and served as support for the intense mining work of these mountains by the Romans. The history of Soutomaior is linked to the history of its castle, an indisputable center of reference. Its origin and exact construction chronology are unknown, but its foundation must be linked to Pax Méndez Sorrede, who was the first to use the surname Soutomaior. Among the most famous members of this family are Pax Gómez de Soutomaior, for his political expertise, or Pedro de Soutomaior, the most renowned member of this lineage, known as Pedro Madruga, Count of Camiña, who went down in history as a character of mystery and legend. There is a thesis, defended by many historians, on the Galician origin of Cristobal Colón stating that he and Pedro Madruga were the same person. The Xacobea Route, Camino Portugues. Through Soutomaior passes the Xacovea Route for pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela: the Camiño Portugues. This route became relevant, especially from the twelfth century, after the independence of Portugal. Its layout inherits old tracks and paths, such as Via XIX, built in the 1st century AD. C., which linked Braga (Portugal) with Astorga through Ponte de Lima (Portugal), Tui, Pontevedra, Santiago and Lugo, and which was one of the most important Roman roads, since it was the backbone of Gallaecia, today Galicia. The Jacobean cult has had in the Portuguese Way a fundamental territory to understand the true international dimension of the phenomenon of pilgrimages. The work will be environmental and will consist of maintenance work on the island, fire surveillance, information work and visitor awareness, and specific interventions to improve the park in collaboration with the environmental service workers. Cleaning of the South Island (the only island not communicated by passenger boat). (This activity depends on the park, it cannot be carried out in all shifts).

This work camp is located on the Illas Cíes, specifically on the Island of Monteagudo (north) at the mouth of the Ría de Vigo, in the municipality of Vigo (Pontevedra). The Cíes Islands form part, together with the Cortegada, Sálvora and Ons archipelagos, of the Galician Atlantic Islands Maritime-Terrestrial National Park. The ecological value of its marine environment is incalculable since within its waters some of the most representative examples of Atlantic marine ecosystems are preserved, which treasure great biological wealth. The marine environment of the Park is a great mosaic of different habitats that support an extraordinary diversity of flora and fauna. There are important communities such as brown algae forests (Saccorhiza polyschides and Laminaria spp.), or those associated with seabeds such as those of Mäerl, and we also find habitats defined as of community or priority interest within the Habitats Directive of the European Union, such as reefs, lagoons or shallow sandbanks permanently covered with seawater. The terrestrial environment is strongly influenced by the proximity of the ocean, highlighting the dune systems, the cliffs and the gorse or heather thickets. Also in the emerged part of the islands we find habitats considered to be of community interest or priority by the directives, such as the gray dunes, the aerohaline coastal scrub or the southern Atlantic humid heather scrub. The main problem for conservation in this environment has been human pressure. Especially in the Cíes Islands, eucalyptus, pine or acacia plantations have displaced the native vegetation in several areas. The eradication of these native species is a very long-term process that is already being worked on and the results of which will be seen gradually. Actions are currently being carried out to develop adequate management of public use, waste from the islands, navigation and anchoring of boats, fishing, shellfishing, etc. Sport fishing and underwater fishing are prohibited within the limits of the National Park. COMPLEMENTARY ACTIVITIES: • Sport activities. • Diving. • Group dynamics. • Guided routes. • Workshops. • Theme evenings. • Environmental activities.
The volunteers will stay in tents, which have canvas-based bunks for resting. The facility has barracks for dining and showers. There is no washing machine (hand wash).

The work will take place at Oosterhouw in Leens (province Groningen). It is a beautiful monumental manor house surrounded by a garden divided into four different styles. Many parts of these gardens have been neglected over the past decades. Volunteers will be cleaning up and helping restore the gardens to their former glory. Activities range from groundwork like digging and levelling to gardening such as weeding and pruning to wood shredding and splitting. The volunteers will work in the gardens five days a week. This excludes the weekends.
The mansion Oosterhouw in Leens is located in the north of the Netherlands in the province of Groningen. The estate is surrounded by a flat agricultural landscape approximately 10 km from the Wadden Sea UNESCO heritage. Oosterhouw was built in 1868. The last time the building was renovated was in 1912-1913. After that, there weren’t any significant developments. The former owners of the mansion were C.o Jellema and Klaas Noordhuis. Co. Jellema is a semi-known poet in the Netherlands, and his current library is still in the house. Klaas Noordhuis was a garden architect and has added essential aspects to the garden. The current owners bought the house a few years ago and want to open the house more to the public. The house, the garden and the surrounding landscape are unique in this area and must be protected and taken care of.
You will have leisure time after work (work ends at 4 p.m.). The Oosterhouw area mainly consists of small villages with Leens as the main village. You will have bikes at your disposal to explore the surrounding area. During the weekend you can enjoy your free time. There are plenty of nice places to visit, for example the beautiful and vibrant city of Groningen or take a ferry boat and visit the peninsula of Schiermonnikoog.
During the two weeks, the volunteers will be staying at Wongema. It’s a working café located in the small village of Hornhuizen. The whole group will be staying in the residential barn besides the main building. There’s a dorm where everybody will be staying. Clean towels will be provided. Sheets for the beds won’t be provided. (Make sure you bring a sleeping bag or your own sheets!) Downstairs is a kitchen which we can use. Bicycles will be provided for transportation between the accommodation and the gardens of Oosterhouw. The bike ride from and to the accommodation is approximately 15 minutes. You will cook together in teams, taking turns and having the opportunity to cook meals from your home countries. You have a kitchen at your disposal. Self-organisation is also a vital point during your daily camp routines. Cooking and cleaning are planned and done independently within the group. Each participant is expected to take part in the CCC (cooking-cleaning-crew).
In The Netherlands the weather is unpredictable. So it’s really important to bring clothes for different types of weather (a rain jacket, hat or sun lotion). We will be working primarily outside in the gardens, where it’s essential to have a safe and secure work environment. Safety glasses and hearing protection will be provided. But there are other important things to think about such as: Strong safety shoes, good fitting working gloves. Make sure you bring a sleeping bag or your own sheets! Take the following documents with you: Passport, Health Insurance Card, Student ID (might be useful in your free time), Debit/Credit card. Especially if you’re from outside Europe, check with your bank if debit or credit card actually works in The Netherlands.(Note: We do not insure your personal items! So please avoid bringing unnecessary expensive electronic items!! Also, make sure to get yourself valid travel insurance!!) Participation fee: €50,- in cash to be paid upon arrival (so please bring this with you!)*
Arrival by plane at Schiphol airport & travel by public transportation: you can travel by train to Winsum station from Schiphol airport. For the train schedules please check the website: https://www.ns.nl/en/journeyplanner/#/ or call us if you need any assistance. We will pick you up at the train station Winsum. Work: Work includes repairing forest fencing for seedlings, raking hay, pulling weeds, preparing firewood, pick-ing up trash in the backcountry, etc. The specific work schedule will be determined depending on weather conditions. You have the opportunity to discover different places in the region during your work. Most of the work will be done outside in the forest and in the wetlands. Bring suitable clothes and boots that can get dirty or damaged, including waterproof clothes with long sleeves, long trousers, and a raincoat. No previous experience is required, you will be trained on how to use the tools on spot. Study part: Interactive field excursions are planned for the volunteers to get to know the locations where they will work and understand why their work is needed and beneficial.
The project is organized in cooperation with the local NGO Cmelak - Friends of Nature Society whose activities focus on a sustainable lifestyle, nature protection, and environmental education. An example of such activities can be the replacement of unnatural spruce tree monoculture with seedlings of original trees or maintaining wetlands and meadows. The aim of this project is to involve volunteers in activities in the New Forest on Jested mountain and Jablonne wetland park and introduce volunteers to a way of life outside the comforts of civilization at one of our mountain cottages. At this project, you are actively contributing to the achievement of UN SDG15 Life on Land.
Location: The project takes place at various work locations around the city of Liberec. The localities (Wetland Park in Jablonne, the new Forest on Jested mountain or the orchid meadows around the Jizera Mountains) are mostly outside the protected areas, but they are interesting and deserve care. Everywhere is a good phone reception. But the closest services such as ATMs or pharmacies are only in the closest bigger town - Liberec. Leisure time: You can play sports, go on hikes to the natural areas, climb the Jested Mountain - the highest peak in the region, or visit nearby castles. The closest city is Liberec which offers many possibilities to enjoy culture, visit the local ZOO, botanical garden or swimming pool etc. There is also a swimming pool on the premises of the second accommodation in the camp.
You will be accommodated in two places. The first week is in the mountain cottage Padouchov, where you will sleep on the beds. The second accommodation is provided in a camp in Jablonne pod Jestedi, where you will sleep in small cabins with a sink. You need to bring your own sleeping bag and a towel. Toilet facilities and showers are available on both sites. Beware that there is no WIFI or washing machine. Volunteers will mostly cook their own meals from provided ingredients. Volunteers might also use the outside fireplace for cooking.
Bring a sleeping bag, adequate clothes and boots for work in wet or hillside areas and a raincoat. It is necessary to pack your stuff into a backpack, not a wheely suitcase or a handbag due to the accommodation at the mountain cottage, where we move partly on foot!
From the airport take bus 119 to Nadrazi Veleslavin stop. Change to green metro line A in the direction of Depo Hostivar, get off at “Mustek” stop and change to yellow metro line B in direction of Cerny Most and go all the way to the final stop “Cerny Most”. From here take the Regiojet bus 15442021 at 14:00 to “Liberec, aut. nadr” (final stop) where your campleader will be waiting for you. Detailed information will be provided in the infosheet.
You will spend a lot of time outdoors so you can get into contact with different kinds of plants, herbs, pollen, and insects - beware if you are allergic.

The main work in the camp will be the recovery off different dry stone works (wall, huts and Civil War trenches). To do this, participants will have the support of experts from CESUB, Subirats historical studies group. They will be provided with all the material needed and experts will contextualise the work they do, the history of the area and the role played by dry stone and vineyard. This will be the principal work but you will take part part on some naturalistic and environmental works like nest boxes making or path cleaning. Work areas are close to accommodation area and participants will be taken there by bus.
Fundació Catalana de l’Esplai has been in "Educating children and youth, strengthening leisure organizations and the third sector, improving the environment and promoting social inclusion and citizenship, with a desire for change” since over 30 years ago. Fundació Catalana de l’Esplai organizes a wide range of leisure time education activities such activities for children, school camps, summer camps, work camps, training for trainers, etc. In 2018 Fundesplai projects reached 258.656 people and more than 600 took part in work camps. “Beyond the vineyard: the dry stone heritage” is a camp based on dry stone works, which were declared cultural heritage by UNESCO. Participants are going to recover a huge stonewall in a vineyard area and also a shepherd stone hut. They are also going to work in a Civil War trenches area in order to make them more accessible to visitors.
The privileged geographical situation, a plain protected by mountains by the sea, the mild climate of the Mediterranean coast and a permeable land, rich in phosphorus, make the region of El Penedès the main producer of wines and cavas in Catalonia. This wine history goes back to at least the 4th century B.C. The vineyard structures are thus a distinctive cultural feature of the area, and they have been refined over time. The Subirats area, halfway between the Vilafranca plain and the Ordal mountains, has steeper terrain than the rest of the region. That is why, in this area, the structure of dry stone walls and constructions, which are necessary for levelling the ground and plotting the vineyards, are quite important. Dry stone works were declared Cultural Patrimony of UNESCO due to its historical importance and patrimonial value. Free time and leisure activities will include group games, workshops and cultural activities in order to learn more about Catalan culture and the vineyard tradition in the area. Participants will visit cultural and historical areas and museum in Subirats, a wine and champagne factory and also Vilafranca del Penedès, the Catalan wine capital. They will also visit the city of Barcelona, which is only 45km from the accommodation area. During the camp, some spaces will be reserved to be able to make trips that allow the young people to know the reality of the territory, as well as its heritage and traditions. Therefore, the following departures will be made: - Two-day excursion with bivouac to the Castle of Subirats. - Visit to the old town of Vilafranca del Penedès. - Visit to the Llopart quarries.
The participants of the workcamp will be installed in “ZER Montcau”, the school of Ordal. They are going to use a school multifunctional area. They will sleep indoors and mattresses will be provided. They are going to eat outdoors and a catering service will serve the food. There will be vegetarian and vegan options and as many menu adaptation as needed.

Lohra Castle is situated in the heart of Germany in Northern Thuringia. The castle, which is surrounded by a scenic hilly landscape, is located on the edge of a natural reserve area. Being one of the largest castles in Thuringia, the history of castle Lohra begins in the Middle Ages. Its architectural styles which have been preserved in the structures of the ensemble attest to a prolonged period of occupation and historical evolution up until today. The castle is more than thousand years old, and it is a relic of German medieval past that is still standing at the heart of a region through which the story of the German nation has been written. Today, it includes twenty buildings from different time periods, showcasing this historical evolution to the enchantment of visitors and heritage enthusiasts: medieval fortifications, remnants of a tower from the 11th century, a Romanesque double-floored chapel, a manor house from the Renaissance period as well as stables and granaries from the 19th and the early 20th centuries. The ensemble is situated in the centre of a beautiful forest. For years Lohra Castle was vacant. In the 1990s a civil society association which became today’s Open Houses, began to rescue the castle and to revitalise it through cultural activities. The process of rehabilitation of cultural heritage not only brought new life and use to an otherwise forgotten monument, but it also provided with a new space where young people could reconnect with tangible heritage while valorising the relevance of preserving a historical monument. Since then, a large number of international workcamps, heritage volunteering projects, heritage training courses, seminars, exhibitions, concerts and other activities with international participants have been taking place every year in the castle.
The projects of Open Houses are based on sustainable principles. Therefore, the activities at Lohra Castle combine aspects of cultural heritage preservation and aspects of natural heritage preservation. The participants of the Workcamps carry out works in the green areas and the forests around the castle, restoration work and collaboration in renovation works. The castle is surrounded by a vast green area and the volunteers will help in the maintenance of it, Near the youth accommodation houses that are part of the Lohra Castle complex there is a camping site which can be used by youth groups, for this reason the area should be made accessible from overgrown grass. The tasks will be mowing and collecting the grass. Additionally, the participants of the project will support the work on renovations on the Castle grounds. The hilly massive around Lohra Castle is listed as National Nature Reserve. Open Houses supports the Reserve since several years with volunteering activities. In a forest near the Castle the participants will remove trees and bushes which are not corresponding with the protection aims in order to clean the paths and make them enjoyable again. They will also will collect the wood remaining after maintenance works, load it on a truck, unload it at the castle and split and stack it for wintertime or for the fireplace. Besides that, the volunteers will continue the maintenance of the green area at the castle. In addition, in the later part of the summer, they will support the recollection, assortment, splitting and storage of wood to prepare the castle for the harsh winter months.
The history of Open Houses Network dates back to the mid-1980s, when a group of young people started to restore village churches in East Germany in voluntary work to protect them from decay. The engagement for these buildings united people who enjoyed the freedom these activities provided and who filled these rooms with life again in ways which by far exceed the craftsmen's work done – through exhibitions, concerts, making music together or just sitting by the camp fire.
The camp places are mostly situated in small villages in rural areas, so the participants should not expect busy places and normal city activities for the leisure time during the working days. Small trips in walking distance are possible in the afternoon. On the weekends it is possible to organise an excursion to nearby cities or to have other leisure activities.
