In Hersbruck you have the opportunity to participate in many different great projects. You can do handicrafts, get creative and work with wood. Interculturality and encounters with young people from the Nuremberg region are the main focus here. The following projects are on the agenda: - The low ropes course on the site is to be dismantled and possibly rebuilt, you can help with this - There is a youth center and a restaurant on the grounds of the Edelweißhütte; you can help pave a barrier-free path between the parking lot, the restaurant and the youth center - You can give the wooden façade of the restaurant a new coat of paint by sanding the wood first - The furniture (tables and chairs) in the restaurant also needs a new coat of paint - Last but not least, you can also get a little creative and build new pallet furniture for the outdoor area
The ijgd has been organising volunteer service programmes since 1949. We are an independent, non-profit association for international youth work, a recognised independent youth welfare organisation, and one of the largest and oldest workcamp organisations in Germany. Each year, we assist around 5,000 young people into volunteer work in Germany and abroad. We give them the opportunity to be creative, act in solidarity, take responsibility for themselves, and discover their own true potential and strengths. Our principles: Ecological learning, voluntary contribution, self-organisation, social development, intercultural learning, gender equality, anti-racism/anti-discrimination and political education. Hersbruck is not far from Nuremberg and has 2 train stations (Hersbruck (l Pegnitz) and Hersbruck (r Pegnitz)). You can travel from both in the direction of Nuremberg. You also have many opportunities to spend your free time on the grounds of the Edelweißhütte: Football, table tennis, table football, a lovely campfire site and a pizza oven, which was created in a previous project. There are also several lakes nearby (Happurger Stausee and the "Baggersee" swimming lake), the outdoor pool in Hersbruck and many paths where you can hike to your heart's content. The history of Hersbruck: From July 1944 to April 1945, Hersbruck was home to the second largest satellite camp of the Flossenbürg concentration camp, where 9,000 prisoners from all over Europe were held. They had to build an underground tunnel system for an armaments factory in neighboring Happurg. The Hersbruck/Happurg documentation site commemorates this camp with two installations: one is located at the former site where the concentration camp prisoners were housed in Hersbruck; the other at the former site of forced labor in Happurg. The Flossenbürg Concentration Camp Memorial offers free public tours every first Sunday of the month at 2 pm. The meeting point is the documentation site in Hersbruck (Badstraße, in the immediate vicinity of the Fackelmann thermal baths). Excursions are also available here if you would like to take a short historical detour with your group.
You will spend the night in newly erected yurts on the grounds of the Edelweißhütte learning and experience space. The kitchen and sanitary facilities are located in the self-catering house. The Edelweißhütte is located on a hill above Hersbruck, on the edge of the small village of Deckersberg. Surrounded by forest, you have a great, spacious area at your disposal. The Edelweißhütte will not only be occupied by you during this time, so expect and make use of the contact with other local youth groups. You will cook together. You plan, shop, cook and clean the kitchen and the accommodation yourselves. From experience we recommend daily shifts of teams with two people, who, on that day don’t take part in the work shift.
At the train station in Hersbruck (l Pegnitz) Attention! There also is a train station called “Hersbruck (r Pegnitz)”, this will NOT be the meeting point! You will be picked up in a minibus by the camp leaders. The camp leaders will ask for your arrival times beforehand. Please let the camp leaders know if there are any last-minute changes. We ask for an arrival until 6pm. Directions to Meeting Point: From airport Nürnberg take the U-Bahn (U2 directed to „Nürnberg Röthenbach“) to „Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof“, this is Nürnberg central station. At the central station you need to change into the S-Bahn (S2 directed to “Hersbruck(l Pegnitz)") and get off at your destination Hersbruck (l Pegnitz). You will work in a nature reserve about 3 km from the campsite where you will walk on foot. The main work will consist of mowing, raking and collecting grass on protected meadows. This work might be physically demanding. As the meadows can be very wet, make sure to bring waterproof working shoes (or rubber boots), gloves, rain gear and a hat to protect yourself from the sun. Work gloves will be provided for you. You will also work directly in the campsite on maintenance tasks and in the nearby forest by doing various manual jobs. At the end of the workcamp, you will help to dismantle the campsite and to transport all the material to Prague where it will be stored during winter.
The workcamp is organised in cooperation with EUROSOLAR. EUROSOLAR promotes renewable energies and a sustainable lifestyle; it engages in youth environmental education and organises environmental summer camps for children, youth and families. The workcamp takes place in a remote but exceptionally beautiful, hilly area of the Bohemian Forest, near the western border of the Czech Republic. The campsite is isolated from civilization and we welcome volunteers who are fond of trying out a basic lifestyle in the forest and do not mind longer walks. The main goal is to help maintain meadows in a nature-protected area and maintain the campsite. At this workcamp, you will actively contribute to the achievement of UN SDG15 Life on Land.
The workcamp takes place in the Bohemian Forest near Stara Knizeci Hut. The campsite is located in the valley of the Celni stream, an isolated part of the village of Lesna in the Bohemian Forest near the German border. There is limited phone coverage. The nearest bus stop is Stara Knizeci Hut and the nearest bigger town is Tachov where you can find ATMs, pharmacies, doctors etc. Hiking in the surrounding countryside. You can visit the ruins of the Zahaji castle or go on trips to the Czech towns in the neighbourhood (e.g. Marianske Lazne). The project is situated on the border with Germany; a trip to Germany could be an option. Besides, you can try archery, play games or experience an Indian sauna. If you have any games, musical instruments or any other activity you could share or teach the group in the campsite conditions, you are welcome to bring them.
In tee-pees with a fireplace in the centre. You will sleep on wooden pads and mattresses stuffed with hay. Nights in the forest might be very cold, even frosty, so bring a very warm sleeping bag, camping mat and some warm clothes. You will bathe in a small river with cold water next to the campsite, the toilets are dry and outdoors. Everyone will cook together as a group on a fireplace. The food is only vegetarian. You can charge your cell phone with a small solar-electricity generator. There is limited phone coverage and no Wifi.
Bring a warm sleeping bag, a mat and warm clothes. There is a strict no alcohol and drugs policy at the campsite. Please note that the last three days are dedicated to dismantling the campsite and transporting all the material to Prague. Therefore leaving the workcamp earlier is not an option. We expect volunteers to enjoy camping and being outdoors. This camp is perfect for volunteers who want to enjoy living and working in basic conditions in close touch with nature. If you are ready for this, an amazing experience is waiting for you! The workcamp might be also suitable for people with social, economic and some health disadvantages. Please, let us know ahead if you need any assistance. To reach the workcamp you will take forest paths, therefore you need to pack your stuff in a backpack rather than in luggage. Because you will be outside all the time, beware of all kinds of allergies (grass, pollen, insects, hay etc.). The food is vegetarian only.
From the airport take bus 119 to the Nadrazi Veleslavin stop. Change to green metro line A in the direction of Depo Hostivar, get off at “Muzeum” and change to red metro line C in the direction of Letnany, go 1 stop and get off at “Hlavni Nadrazi” stop (main railway station). Take the train IC562 Zapadni Express at 12:23 and get off at Plzen at 13:58. Go to the bus station in front of the train station and at 14:10 take the bus 440251 3 in the direction to “Lesna, Stara Knizeci Hut”. Get off at this last stop at 16:03. The meeting point is at the bus stop. PAY ATTENTION! THIS IS THE ONLY CONNECTION YOU CAN TAKE ON THIS DAY!
Evening discussions about climate, environment, sustainability and sustainable camps by the fire. You will have the unique opportunity to try archery, participate in fun games and learn to recognize the stars. Also, as you will be living in close contact with nature, you will improve your camping skills and learn a lot about local fauna and flora.

Do you want to actively contribute to the climate and the renaturation of a moor? Then you can get active on a small area in a nature reserve near Gifhorn. Peatlands not only play an important role in storing CO2, they also store water and have a cooling effect on the surrounding landscape. You will be working on an area near Gifhorn that is part of a nature reserve, continuing the work project of last year's work campers. To prevent the area from becoming a forest or drying out, young pine and birch trees must be removed. These can either be pulled out by hand or removed with spades and branch shears. After that, the small trees must be removed from the area. In doing so, you not only make your contribution to climate protection, but also help to preserve valuable habitats and rare species (e.g. peat mosses). To ensure that the area remains particularly attractive for rare dragonflies (spear damselflies), a few peat pits (hollows) must be improved so that the water can remain there for longer and thus remain a habitat for the dragonflies. You will work mostly independently, but will be guided and supported by staff members of the Department of Environment. Your programme also includes the construction of various nesting aids.

During this workcamp you will make an important contribution to the preservation of a 2km long nature trail for students. The ERNat(o)ur nature trail (https://www.erna-eutin.de/ner/ (only in German)) consists of 16 learning and experience stations where children and young people can gain practical experience on the topics of biotopes, species conservation, sustainable use of our habitat and conscious nutrition. The aim is to encourage students to shape a sustainable environment by teaching them about nature and its interrelationships and raising their awareness of the inestimable value of nature. To ensure that the nature trail can continue to be used, intensive maintenance and care are required. Despite ongoing maintenance and renovation work by the supervising association Erlebnis Natur e.V. (ERNA) (https://www.erna-eutin.de/ (only in German)), there are always construction sites that cannot simply be renewed during ongoing operations. For example, a 100-metre-long boardwalk was completely demolished and rebuilt, and a small landing net pond was renewed and enlarged at the last workcamp in 2022. As part of this year's workcamp, weather protection roofs are to be erected in order to ensure safety for the organisation of around 100 events a year with around 3,000 visitors on the subject of education for sustainability. You will also be carrying out some work on the landing net pond, which will be renovated in 2022, repairing and replacing broken information boards on the nature trail, cutting and repairing paths and preparing two major festivals of the Erlebnis Natur e.V. (ERNA) association, the apple festival on 3rd of October and the 20th anniversary of the association on 7th of October. For the Erlebnis Natur e.V. (ERNA) association, your maintenance work on the nature trail is an important prerequisite for being able to fulfil its self-imposed task of education for sustainable development. he members of the association will of course also pursue this task during your work and provide you with a lot of theoretical and practical knowledge about nature, environment, species and climate protection, sustainable development and sustainable use of our habitat as well as conscious nutrition.
Erlebnis Natur e.V. (ERNA) was founded 20 years ago to get children and young people excited about nature and to promote environmental education. The association offers various programs for groups, has its own children's and youth group and has created the extensive nature experience area ErNat(o)ur in Eutin with numerous learning and experience stations. The range of nature education topics includes the exploration of various biotopes, species protection and promotion, the sustainable use of our habitat and conscious nutrition. The host is looking for passionate, motivated and dedicated volunteers who have an interest in animal welfare and conservation. Work includes providing a high standard of care to monkey who have been rescued from the UK pet trade, allowing them to live in stable, enriching social groups. Volunteers will spend the mornings helping clean the enclosures. In the afternoons, volunteers will be preparing monkey food bowls and learning to identify edible wild leaves to use to make enrichment items for the monkeys. Volunteers will be helping with daily tasks and general upkeeping, including cleaning, tidying, maintenance and gardening. When the site is open to the public, volunteers may help full time members of staff provide arts and crafts workshops to visiting children. Volunteers will receive training on how to behave around monkeys, along with a general background regarding the UK Pet Trade and the impact of captivity on monkeys as well as training on how to prepare enclosures, food and enrichment for the monkeys – a truly once in a lifetime experience! It is important to note, volunteers will have no direct contact with the monkeys.
Wild Futures is a UK registered charity founded upon six decades of experience as a leader in the field of primate welfare and conservation, environmental education and sustainable practice. The host is committed to protecting primates and habitats worldwide, with the protection of non-human primates at the forefront of the charities work. The safe haven for monkeys rescued from situations of abuse and neglect is The Monkey Sanctuary in Cornwall, which has an international reputation for its levels of care and innovative management techniques.
The volunteers are based a 45-minute walk from the picturesque seaside town of Looe. Volunteers will stay at the sanctuary in Murrayton House, a 19th Century Building, which has beautiful views of the rising and setting sun, and wildlife gardens to relax in and enjoy. Looe is the picturesque fishing harbour situated in South East Cornwall, just a further 45 minutes from the big city of Plymouth. Looe is famous for fish and a sandy beach with lots of shops, hikes, food and fun to be had! Looe has a rich history such as the famous Looe Bridge that joins the East and West towns. There are many hidden treasures in including beautiful woodland and cobbled streets lined with independent shops and restaurants.
Volunteers will stay in single sex dorms with up to four other people on the site. Volunteers will either stay in a single bed or bunk bed. Volunteers need to bring their own towels, toiletries and sleeping bag. Pillows, pillow cases, a sheet for the mattress and a blanket are provided. There is a fully accessible kitchen and pantry which volunteers will be able to utilise for meal times, food supplies will be provided for volunteers to prepare their own three meals a day (or cook together as a group it is lovely to cook and eat together!) and there is additional access for volunteers to store meat and fish free products. Volunteers will have access to a living room with a TV, board games, DVDs and an area to relaced. Optional evening entertainments are listed on the chalkboard. Volunteers will have access to showers, hot water and a washing machine and detergent. There is a specific drying room to dry clothes. Uniform is provided, when necessary, on volunteering jobs. Volunteers will clean enclosures in PPE (overalls, boots and gloves) which are provided. PLEASE NOTE: this is a vegetarian centre, no meat or fish product are to be eaten, cooked or stored on side. Volunteers need to be fit and healthy to carry out the volunteering. Volunteers need to be physically fit to carry out the work.
There are two options for the incoming volunteers: 1. Volunteers fly into Bristol Airport. Volunteers will get the cross country to Bristol Temple Meads and then a train to Liskeard - this will take roughly 2 hours 40 minutes and is a direct train. Once volunteers arrive in Liskeard, they will need to take a train to Looe which is roughly 30 minutes. A Taxi will then be needed to wild Futures which is less than ten minutes. 2. If volunteers cannot arrive in to Bristol Airport, then Heathrow is needed. However this is a longer journey, Volunteers will need to get the National Express Bus (Book In Advance) to Liskeard and a train to Looe which takes approximately 6 hours. A Taxi will then be needed to wild Futures which is less than ten minutes. Travel Costs: Option One: £60 Option Two: £50 These costs are rough estimates.
Concordia will work with the host and pre organise taxis to cover one journey to the venue and one journey back to the station on the final day. If the volunteer fails to reach the meeting point on time, they will need to organise their own final transportation to the venue. IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT ALL VOLUNTEERS HAVE 2 COVID VACCINATIONS.

The tasks will be mowing andcollecting the grass. Additionally, the participants of the project will support the work on renovations on the Castle grounds. The hilly massive around Lohra Castle is listed as National Nature Reserve. Open Houses supports the Reserve since several years with volunteering activities. In a forest near the Castle the participants will remove trees and bushes which are not corresponding with the protection aims in order to clean the paths and make them enjoyable again. They will also will collect the wood remaining after maintenance works, load it on a truck, unload it at the castle and split and stack it for wintertime or for the fireplace. Besides that, the volunteers will continue the maintenance of the green area at the castle. In addition, in the later part of the summer, they will support the recollection, assortment, splitting and storage of wood to prepare the castle for the harsh winter months. PARTICIPATION TERMS Participants have to take part for the whole time of the project. The working part consists in six hours per day. Be informed, that during all projects the work will take place also on rainy and cold days and be prepared for that.
Open Houses – not empty buildings, but places with visible and invisible traces of history, places which have grown and decayed over the centuries, places which were shaped by those people who lived there long ago as well those who left only yesterday – places which will be shaped by those who live there or who come as a guest. Open Houses – rooms which want to be filled with dreams and ideas, with meetings and exchange, by people of different backgrounds, different cultures, different generations and different ideas and visions. The history of Open Houses Network dates back to the mid-1980s, when a group of young people started to restore village churches in East Germany in voluntary work to protect them from decay. The engagement for these buildings united people who enjoyed the freedom these activities provided and who filled these rooms with life again in ways which by far exceed the craftsmen's work done – through exhibitions, concerts, making music together or just sitting by the camp fire. Meanwhile, rooms free of political and ideological pressure are no longer urgently required; however, places have become rare where people can meet without commercial pressure, free of bureaucracy and institutionalism, free of nepotism and the exclusion which it produces. What should be easy – to go somewhere in order to meet people and to work together – has become difficult. The tightrope walk between, on the one hand, public activities in a monetary and functional sense, and the retreat into private life on the other, is very difficult, and it requires a lot of power and permanent efforts to tackle red tape and financial restrictions. Free spaces are less and less understood as common property, and are permanently being cut back. The idea of public property seems to have gone out of fashion, and places of common responsible work have become rare. Open Houses Network tries to create and protect such spaces. In this process, we do not want to be the doers, but be people who have a vision, who want to initiate something, but who also are aware of depending on the co-operation of others. We understand our projects and events as offers – as offers to create space for commitment, for changes, for meetings.
LOCATION: Next towns: Bleicherode (6 km), Nordhausen (20 km), Erfurt (75 km) Region: Thuringia Lohra Castle is situated in the heart of Germany in Northern Thuringia. The castle, which is surrounded by a scenic hilly landscape, is located on the edge of a natural reserve area. Being one of the largest castles in Thuringia, the history of castle Lohra begins in the Middle Ages. Its architectural styles which have been preserved in the structures of the ensemble attest to a prolonged period of occupation and historical evolution up until today. The castle is more than thousand years old, and it is a relic of German medieval past that is still standing at the heart of a region through which the story of the German nation has been written. Today, it includes twenty buildings from different time periods, showcasing this historical evolution to the enchantment of visitors and heritage enthusiasts: medieval fortifications, remnants of a tower from the 11th century, a Romanesque double-floored chapel, a manor house from the Renaissance period as well as stables and granaries from the 19th and the early 20th centuries. The ensemble is situated in the centre of a beautiful forest. LEISURE TIME The camp places are mostly situated in small villages in rural areas, so the participants should not expect busy places and normal city activities for the leisure time during the working days. These cleanup tasks may be arranged in partnership with the above mentioned organisations or organised solely by SEEDS. We aim to also involve the local community, so some of our events may be open to the public. We hope participants will learn how to plan and do their own trash hunting projects back at home. This project is based on similar activities around the world, where outstanding results have been achieved with volunteers. One of the two options below is also included in this camp as a hands-on volunteering activity day:A day trip combining a visit to the HellisheiE(i geothermal power plant, a trash hunt in the area; and the Hot River Hike, a hike up a valley filled with hot springs where one can bathe. A day trip to the Reykjanes peninsula, combined with a coastal cleanup in the area. All the activities are dependent on conditions such as weather and availability of our partners. This camp combines learning, sharing, hands-on work and fun. No previous experience is needed. Volunteers should prepare to share environmental issues from their countries and be ready to spend time outdoors, walk medium distances during the cleanups, as during other activities and sightseeing. As a part of the project happens outdoors, volunteers should be ready to adapt and be flexible with the work and free-time schedule, as depending on the changeable weather, we may not be able to perform some of the activities (as) planned.
The Environmentally Aware and amp; Trash Hunting project is part of a series of camps organised by SEEDS in cooperation with different partners. SEEDS works with and supports the Icelandic ministry for Environment and Natural Resources on a project to clean up the Icelandic coastline; the Blue Army, an organisation dedicated to the cause of coast cleaning; Whales of Iceland, an exhibition of life size models of whales and porpoises aiming at educating about their lives and human impact on their existence; SORPA, the organisation in charge of waste collection and amp; management in the ReykjavEk area and other local stakeholders. This camp allows volunteers to learn about global and local environmental issues through non-formal activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits, as well as to contribute directly to environment protection by joining outdoor cleanup tasks.

This project is actively working for SDG 15 (Life on Land), organized together with local NPOs, ‘Association to protect nature in Tondabayashi’ and ‘Hamuro club’ since 1999. 67% of land in Japan is covered with forest and 40% of them is human-made planted forest called SATOYAMA, where people used to receive the benefit to live such as food and resources. SATOYAMA needs to be maintained its biodiversity and to keep water adjustment function. Our ancestors had protected and utilized the forest in an ecological and sustainable way, which has been neglected by modernization. We try to revive it with global voluntary power! Most of the members of the local organization are aged 50-70 so they expect our participation of youth and foreign vols. to vitalize the activities both mentally and physically.
