AGORÀ – Youth Worker’s Actions in Public Spaces for Social Change
Together in the streets against gender discrimination. An innovative system to combat gender discrimination among young people through artistic street actions with clownerie, dance, theatre and social cabaret.
What is AGORÀ?
An Erasmus+ strategic partnership that developed innovative pedagogical tools to combat gender discrimination through artistic actions in public spaces
AGORÀ – Youth Worker’s Actions in Public Spaces for Social Change is a project coordinated by Lunaria and co-financed by the Erasmus+ programme, aimed at youth workers, educators, activists, young people and local communities.
The main objective is to develop tools and pedagogical approaches to combat gender discrimination among young people living in isolated areas, through the implementation of street actions in public spaces.
The project involved 5 organizations from 5 European countries: Lunaria (Italy), Universitur (Romania), Nexes (Spain), Break the Borders (Greece), Le Bruit de la Conversation (France), in a journey lasting from December 2019 to June 2022.
Why is it innovative? For the first time it integrates non-formal education with artistic and performative methods (clownerie, dance, theatre, social cabaret) to create street actions that raise awareness on gender issues in an engaging and accessible way.

The Journey
From December 2019 to June 2022: a journey through research, training, testing and public actions
First Transnational Meeting in Athens
The coordinators of partner organizations met in the ancient setting of Athens to define the project strategy: beneficiaries, common objectives, implementation methods and research tools to detect real needs of educators working with young people on gender discrimination.
Field Research
In-depth research conducted in all involved countries through interviews, focus groups and questionnaires to photograph the picture of gender discrimination among new generations.
People involved:
• 280 people in focus groups
• 178 questionnaires collected
• 48 in-depth interviews
Target: young people, youth workers, representatives of local organizations, social workers and teachers
Common issues identified: gender and education, gender in educational institutions, gender in workplaces, gender violence, gender and minorities, gender discrimination in public spaces.
Field Testing of IO1
After the pandemic pause, testing of Intellectual Output 1 tools with organizations in Rome and Rieti province: Associazione Liberi Artigiani, Spazio Giovani e Scuola D’Arte MaTeMù, Centro Giovanile Batti il tuo Tempo Evolution.
11 field tests carried out in Italy, marking the resumption of in-person activities after lockdown.
Training Course in Orvieto
From September 25 to October 6, at Casa Laboratorio il Cerquosino in Morrano (Orvieto), 30 youth workers, activists and performers from 5 European countries were trained experiencing non-formal education methodologies integrated with clownerie, labyrinth theatre and body movement.
5 activities developed to address issues emerged from research:

Tools Refinement
Development of tools used and created during the training course for the publication of Intellectual Output 2, with descriptions of artistic methodologies, their pedagogical application and workshops on gender issues.
Testing in Rome
The 5 thematic workshops were tested with youth organizations in Rome, in collaboration with the Network of Popular Schools and Scomodo editorial team, to adapt the tools and ensure their effectiveness in combating gender discrimination.
Final Event in Rome
Training event at “Tool Scuola di Arti, Mestieri e Cittadinanza” headquarters at via Taranto 96/e with:
• Presentation of results and impact in Rome area
• Two sessions of Non-Formal Education activities (2 hours each)
• Distribution of Intellectual Output 2
A day full of reflections on gender dynamics in an intergenerational and heterogeneous group.
Transnational Project Meeting in Toulouse
Representatives of partner organizations met in Toulouse at “Le Bruit de la Conversation” for two intense days:
Day 1: Local event open to residents of Bagatelle neighborhood with informational activities, concert by “La Bruja” group and choreographic performance by local dance school.
Day 2: Discussion among organization representatives on results, experiences and great impact of the project on national territories.

Two complete manuals for educators and youth workers: diagnostic tools and practical activities to combat gender discrimination
Intellectual Output 1
Toolkit to Detect Discrimination
Manual with research reports conducted in 5 European countries and a package of non-formal education tools to detect warning signs of possible gender discrimination among young people and understand their causes.
Includes: Research results with 506 people, comparative analysis, diagnostic tools and methodologies for educators.
