WORDS ARE STONES
Stopping the legitimization of racism and xenophobia in European public debate. Engaging NGO activists and citizens in building counter-narratives to promote intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding.
The Project
A European initiative to combat the stigmatization of immigrants and build counter-narratives in the context of the 2019 European elections
Words are Stones is a project supported by the Europe for Citizens programme that aims to engage NGO activists and European citizens in stopping the current process of cultural, social, political and media legitimization of racism and xenophobia in political and public debate.
The project is coordinated by Lunaria (Italy) in partnership with Antigone (Greece), SOS Racisme (Spain), Grenzenlos (Austria), Adice (France) and Kisa (Cyprus).
The context: Nationalist, populist and xenophobic movements that instrumentally mix Euroscepticism, intolerance, hatred and racism to increase their consensus represent a danger to the construction of a democratic, united, cohesive and peaceful European society.
Public debate is crossed by stereotypes and prejudices against immigrants and refugees that often degenerate into racist crimes and attacks. It is urgent that European civil society strengthens its efforts to combat all forms of intolerance, stigmatization and hate speech.
