Monitoring Racism in Sport
Monitoring racism in grassroots sport. A European project to strengthen the capacity to monitor, document and report discrimination and racism in grassroots sport.
The Project
MONITORA strengthens the capacity of civil society organizations to monitor and report racism in sport
MONITORA aims to strengthen the capacity and professional skills of civil society organizations, grassroots sports operators, local and national institutions in monitoring and reporting discrimination in sport, to increase their visibility and to identify strategic actions to prevent and combat them.
In Europe, there is a lack of effective and coordinated methodologies, tools and procedures for monitoring racism and discrimination, especially in grassroots sport. The attention of the media and public opinion tends to focus on explicit forms of discrimination and racism that run through professional sport and involve the most famous athletes.
MONITORA aims to help fill this gap by developing cooperation, peer learning and the exchange of experiences at European level in the field of monitoring discrimination and racism in grassroots sport.
Research & Analysis
Collect and analyze methodologies adopted at local and national level to structure an effective monitoring system.
Networking
Strengthen networking at local, national and international level to develop a common monitoring protocol proposal.
Training
Develop, test and disseminate training modules to improve operators’ monitoring and reporting skills.
The Problem
Why it is necessary to monitor racism in grassroots sport
Sport cannot be considered an island separate from the social context. Racism and discrimination run through all levels of sport, from professional to amateur.
However, while the most blatant cases in professional sport receive extensive media coverage, racism in grassroots sport remains largely invisible and unmonitored, making it impossible to intervene effectively to combat it.
Systematic monitoring is the essential first step to raise awareness, give visibility and promote equal opportunities in all sporting environments.
