Active for climate protection and biodiversity – save the peatlands in the Hunsrück area! You will actively contribute to protecting a special peatland called “Weyrichsbruch”. This area was drained more than 150 years ago for forestry use. Peatlands are a valuable and natural Co2 storage as well as an ecological habitat with a high and very specialized biodiversity. For these reasons, in the 1980s it was decided to revitalize a small part of the Weyrichsbruch. Now the regional authorities for nature protection want to revitalise a much bigger part and this is where you can help! Under the supervision of two experienced Park Rangers you will improve the water balance in this peatland in order to renature the bog, and help it to cope better with the consequences of climate change. Some of your tasks will be to undo the drainage of the area by blocking or filling ditches, or by building small wooden barriers. While working, you will be able to discover many rare species which have already returned. The park Rangers will be happy to explain to you the ecological background and the consequences of climate change and they will guide you to discover this special habitat and its species. The Weyrichsbruch is bordering a well-known hiking trail. On that trail, it is possible to take a look inside the bog from a wooden plank path. In addition, various information boards have been placed around the area to convey the ecological background of the Weyrichsbruch and thus contribute to environmental education. Attention: The work might be physically hard, the wheelbarrow becomes your daily companion and you will get wet and muddy for sure! Please bring hiking boots, rubber boots and suitable working clothes.
This is a special project for nature lovers and people interested in nature protection work. You will get wet and dirty. Please be prepared that April in the Hunsrück area can either be warm and sunny or quite fresh and rainy.
The workcamp will take place in Kell am See, a village 30 km from Trier, not far from the border with Luxemburg. The landscape in this area is very beautiful! It is dominated by huge forests, steep hills, small brooks and ponds, rocks and marshes. Only small hamlets interrupt the nature, which makes it a perfect region for plenty of different species but also for hiking. You will really feel different here! The area is well known for cycling, walking and other kinds of outdoor activities. There is a local holiday resort nearby the Education Centre, which offers more than 200 holiday bungalows next to a lake and locals love to come here for cycling (there is a 45 km cycling path on a former railway roadbed) or to spend a nice day outside. The region also offers plenty of historic sites (castles, museums….). In addition, you will have the opportunity to come in contact with local associations, e.g. the local voluntary fire brigade. Since there aren’t many public transportation means available around Kell am See, the number of excursions will be limited. However, you will have the chance to visit the city of Trier with its famous Roman sites, the cathedral and birth place of Karl-Marx
You will stay in the Educational Centre in Kell am See, which is an important place for youth work in the whole area around the city of Trier. This public and non-profit centre offers the opportunity for youth groups, associations and schools to spend some days or weeks here running a seminar or other projects. You will stay in five wooden tepees for max. five persons each. Staying here, among pure nature and with the campfire in the middle of the tepees’ circle is a wonderful experience. You will sleep on mattresses inside the tepees. Close to the tepees, you will have access to your own kitchen including a dish-washer, to a living room and sanitary facilities, all inside the Educational Centre. In your free time you can use the different outdoor facilities of the centre like the campfire and the basketball, football and volleyball fields. Close to the centre, there is also a lake and hiking trails. Please be aware that the tepees have electricity but no heating, so it might be cold at night. The facilities in the centre (kitchen, living room and sanitary facilities) can be heated though. Your group of volunteers will be responsible for grocery shopping and cooking together. The food will be bought with the camp budget and everybody will take turns for cooking, washing the dishes and cleaning. In order to reduce our carbon footprint on the planet, we encourage volunteers to reduce meat and try more sustainable dishes.
Please be aware that ticks are a problem at all outdoor work camps in Germany - including this one. In our General Infosheet you will find suggestions on how you can protect yourself against them. You are also welcome to check whether a vaccination against the tick-borne disease TBE makes sense and is possible in your home country
You will be picked up from the bus stop in Kell am See. Please inform your campleader about your arrival time on Apr 21st . You can check for connections from anywhere to Kell am See on: www.bahn.com .

SEEDS’ programme combines learning, sharing, hands-on activities, getting to know Iceland, its culture, having fun, exploring the city and its attractions, as stunning natural attractions in possible excursions. Participants should prepare to share environmental issues from their countries and should be ready to spend time outdoors walking medium distances during activities and sightseeing. Note this project is a learning/sharing camp and not a standard workcamp. This project has a smaller volunteer work part and puts a bigger emphasis on the personal learning process than on the community impact. One of the two options below is also included in this camp as a hands-on volunteering activity day: 1. A day trip to the Hot River area, combined with a cleanup or work with an environmental project in the area, or 2. A day trip to the Reykjanes peninsula, combined with a coastal cleanup in the area.
During this camp, participants can share their love for (and learn more about) global & local environmental issues, as well as photography. If you are interested in topics such as climate change, waste management, animal protection and sustainability, and you also love taking photographs or want to develop your photography skills, then this project is for you! While developing artistic and technical photography skills, you will be focusing on environmental and sustainability issues through non-formal activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits facilitated by SEEDS. One of our aims is to help create more environmentally aware consumers & travellers! You will visit local projects on environment and conservation. These may include hands-on activities or guided visits. Some examples include outdoor cleanup tasks, a geothermal power plant, a local fauna and/or flora exhibition or an outdoor Icelandic culture museum. Some of these activities are dependent on conditions such as weather, as well as availability or restrictions of our partner organisations. You will also have time to put the theory about photography into practice, walking around and exploring the city. At the end of the camp, the best photographs from each participant are selected for an online exhibition on SEEDS' social media. Participants should bring their own digital cameras, lenses, tripods and laptops if possible.

SEEDS participants will stay in a house in Reykjavík. The facilities are basic with a kitchen, showers, and a washing machine. Everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions. Participants will sleep in shared rooms or dormitories. Please bring your own sleeping bag. Volunteers will receive food supplies and will be in charge of cooking and cleaning. Please note the food SEEDS provides will be vegetarian. Do not forget to bring some traditional/typical food, drinks, recipes, music, games or movies from your country for the intercultural evening. Please be aware some items or ingredients may be expensive in Iceland and you will need to buy them yourselves or bring them from your country.
Participation fee EUR 350 (Euros). The fee can either be transferred in advance via bank transfer, or paid in cash on arrival. The fee includes transportation from the meeting point to the camp (on the first day and one trip combined with the trash collection activity (Hot River or Reykjanes). Meeting time will be 18:00 (6:00 pm) on April 25 at SEEDS’ office in Reykjavík. Participants that cannot arrive on time (later or delayed flights) will be sent information on how to reach the camp on their own. Some excursions (e.g. to the Golden Circle and/or South Shore) can be arranged at discount fares if there is free time after the camp workshops/sessions. Weather may be cold or rainy, so we recommend bringing warm and/or waterproof clothes) and good walking shoes, as some of the activities take place outdoors.

This camp allows volunteers to learn about global and local environmental issues through non-formal educational activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits, as well as to contribute directly to environmental protection by joining outdoor coastal cleanup tasks in the shores and beaches. Additional work will be undertaken in the area of our accommodation such as removing old fences dangerous to wildlife and visitors, as well as helping with renovation and maintenance of the house. We may also be marking some walking paths and, depending on the advance of the mentioned tasks, volunteers might do some forestry tasks in a small forest planted in the area, like trimming the vegetation or planting some trees. This camp combines learning, sharing, hands-on work and fun. No previous experience is needed. Volunteers should prepare to share environmental issues from their countries and be ready to spend time outdoors, walking during the cleanups. Volunteers should be ready to adapt and be flexible with the work and free-time schedule, as depending on the weather, we may not be able to perform some of the planned activities.
The Awareness, Engagement and Action project is part of a series of camps organised by SEEDS in cooperation with different partners, where we try to raise awareness about current environmental issues and encourage the volunteers to take action One of our main goals for the next few years is to contribute to a nation-wide project aiming at cleaning up the Icelandic coastline. SEEDS works along and supports the Icelandic ministry for Environment and Natural Resources, the Icelandic Environmental organisation Landvernd, the Environmental Agency of Iceland, Umhverfisstofnun and other partners in order to draw attention to the issues of ocean pollution, plastic waste and to engage volunteers in cleaning up actions around the country. PROJECT: The association works to build an idea of an inclusive educational community where everyone has the opportunity to find the space to express themself, outside of any judgment, social or political. On a daily basis it deals with youth aggregation, active citizenship, reception and receptivity, and local development for the purpose of sustainable tourism. This project takes place at Rifugio il Trio, a new space that the association is aiming to redevelop starting from the renovation of the spaces. This camp will be one of the first held in this facility and the restoration work will focus on restoring the dormitory areas. The management of a refuge is an act of care for this rural area, offering an active presence in the mountain area and facilitating access to the hinterland for everyone. The ordinary management of the refuge requires constant maintenance and renovation, which is why the camp focuses on this space, on the one hand offering volunteers the experience of living in a mountain refuge in its wildness and using this space as a place of experimentation were expressing one's creativity and rediscovering the value of manual skills and traditional knowledge.
WORK: The days will be structured by including a part of manual work and redevelopment and maintenance of the space and area. In particular, the main body of work will be aimed at restoring the dormitories. Volunteers will work around 5/6 hours a day. As always, there will be space to give vent to creativity and much more. Group life, shared management of cooking, cleaning and convivial moments including games, excursions and other experiences. This workcamp requires a high sense of adaptation, the ability to disconnect from digital devices and the internet connection, the desire to disconnect from everyday life to connect with a life more in relationship with the people around you and nature. By joining this workcamp you will contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals: Reduce inequality -SDG10 and SustainableCommunities-SDG11
PARTNERS: ALA Associazione Liberi Artigiani – organization active since 2009, work to develop educational framework and workshops specializing in activities for youth and adults in the rural areas. The focus of its work is in Sabina, an agricultural area north of Rome ( 40km) where it has made local development and youth policies its main vocation. The methodology and the educational approach mixes non formal methods, art, creativity, and outdoor practices.
LOCATION AND LEISURE: Rifugio il Trio is located near Poggio Catino, a small village in the Province of Rieti in the Italian region Latium. It is located about 50 kilometers northeast of Rome and about 20 kilometers southwest of Rieti. During their free time, volunteers could make some excursions, workshops and sports. TERMINAL: Rome Fiumicino airport (FCO) and then direct train to Poggio Mirteto or Rome Ciampino airport (CIA) and then bus connection to Rome Tuscolana and then train to Poggio Mirteto.
ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD: The group is accommodated in a tent, in the camping area around the refuge. The shelter and the spaces inside are used by the staff for cooking and rain emergencies.Scarcity of resources, spartan accommodation, with shared bathrooms and outdoor showers. Cleaning and cooking will be managed by the volunteers themselves through cleaning/cooking shifts. The group will have access to a pantry based on which to build a weekly menu respecting allergies/intolerance and particular diets.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Come with proper equipment and be ready to go hiking (trekking shoes, working clothes, etc...). Be ready to become part of a local small community. Be open minded. This project is supported by the European Solidarity Corps. Food and accommodation are covered by the European Union. Transportation costs will be refunded according to the distance band rules of the programme. No fees are required. SEEDS programme combines learning, sharing, hands-on activities, getting to know Iceland, its culture, having fun, exploring the city and its attractions, as stunning natural attractions in possible excursions. One of the two options below is also included in this camp as a hands-on volunteering activity day:1. A day trip to the Hot River area, combined with a cleanup or work with an environmental project in the area, or2. A day trip to the Reykjanes peninsula, combined with a coastal cleanup in the area.
During this camp, participants can share their love for (and learn more about) global and local environmental issues, as well as photography. If you are interested in topics such as climate change, waste management, animal protection and sustainability, and you also love taking photographs or want to develop your photography skills, then this project is for youWhile developing artistic and technical photography skills, you will be focusing on environmental and sustainability issues through non-formal activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits facilitated by SEEDS. One of our aims is to help create more environmentally aware consumers and travellersYou will visit local projects on environment and conservation. At the end of the camp, the best photographs from each participant are selected for an online exhibition on SEEDS social media. Participants should bring their own digital cameras, lenses, tripods and laptops if possible.
Reykjavik is a dynamic, modern city which lives in harmony with nature, using renewable energy sources. The world s northernmost capital bridges the Atlantic, between Europe and North America. Mornings will be devoted to renovating the association's premises. On the programme, you'll be repainting the interiors of this recently renovated building and helping to make it a warm and welcoming place. You'll also be lending a hand with the overall project for this third place Ecocycle, a collective space for sharing, through its shared gardens and participatory workshops.
Nestled in the hollow of a green valley, the town of St Amand de Coly is located in the heart of the Périgord Noir, a territory rich in history! Composed of two former municipalities that decided to join forces to form one. The town is home to the Ecocycle association, a third place that is developing a participatory activity project in Saint Amand de Coly and the surrounding area. These activities are strongly influenced by concerns about climate change. You will help the association and its volunteers to prepare the building to welcome its members. You'll discover the local people's sense of welcome and the charm of the countryside and heritage, as you work with the other volunteers to organise your programme of activities.
Coly - St Amand is located in Périgord Noir, 10 km from the caves of Lascaux, between Périgueux and Brive. Leisure activities: Site visits, nature activities, you will build your own entertainment program with the leaders and the other participants. We favour a discovery of the territory and these actors over consumption activities.
You will be welcomed at the Vieux logis de Saint Amand. Sleeping accommodation in rooms of 2 to 3 people. Meals will be cooked and eaten collectively, so you can take it in turns to prepare some tasty dishes, so come along with your own recipes.
You will have to take a train to Condat-Le Lardin (2 hours from Bordeaux and 4 hours from Toulouse). The leaders will meet you at Condat-Le Lardin train station in the end of the afternoon.

Come and enjoy the exceptional setting of the Chamonix-Mont-Blanc valley. In summer and winter alike, the Chamonix Youth Hostel welcomes many tourists who take advantage of their stay to discover the beauty of the surrounding nature and enjoy outdoor activities. The hostel is keen to offer facilities that reflect its values, and has joined forces with the Mont-Blanc fermes pédagogiques association to bring you this project. These two organisations work hand in hand to raise awareness of agricultural values: their aim is to set up an educational micro-farm at the hostel. You'll be taking part in the creation of a henhouse, a cabin for the animals, and the creation of paddocks for grazing. This work camp will be an opportunity to think about what food we produce and how. No specific skills are required. If you're interested in preserving the mountain environment and enjoy working as part of a team, this is the project for you.
For the past three years, Concordia has been working with the youth hostel network on volunteer projects. This partnership is being developed this year with a new project at the Chamonix site. Thomas, the hostel manager, wanted to strengthen the international and intercultural dimension of his business by welcoming a group of volunteers. The environmental dimension is also an issue at the heart of the priorities of tourism, which is evolving under the impact of climate change. The youth hostel is in partnership with the Mont-Blanc fermes pédagogiques association, which aims to introduce certain sections of the public to the rudiments of balanced systems from field to plate, and to raise awareness among as many people as possible of sustainable production methods, permacultural market gardening and the treatment of small livestock.
The youth hostel is located at the foot of the Bosson glaciers, facing the Aiguille du Midi, so you'll have plenty to see during your stay! Just 600 meters from the accommodation, you'll find all the basic amenities (mini-market, market, restaurants, etc.). Chamonix town center is 2.5km away, within easy walking distance. There are plenty of outdoor activities to choose from: sports, nature and cultural activities to suit all tastes.
You will be accommodated in the Youth Hostel, in dormitories with individual beds.Toilets and showers will be on the landing. Together, you'll help to organise community life (cleaning, activities, etc.) and take it in turns to prepare meals using locally sourced produce. Our aim is to encourage vegetarian eating using local, seasonal produce, while respecting participants diets and discovering local cuisine together. You'll be rubbing shoulders with the guests of the youth hostel, which will strengthen the exchange of experiences. The hostel has Wifi in the communal areas.
This project is supported by the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) programme for young people aged 18 to 30. It is open to all volunteers who meet the ESC criteria and is subject to several principles and conditions presented on this page: https://europa.eu/youth/solidarity/mission_fr - Volunteers do not have to pay any fees (neither postage nor participation fees) to take part in the project, and will receive financial support for their journey, up to a maximum amount determined according to the distance they will be travelling and on presentation of the original tickets; - Volunteers must register on PASS, the ESC portal, and Concordia will then invite them to confirm their participation in the project; - Volunteers will receive pocket money, calculated on the basis of €6/day, as soon as they arrive on the project in France; - Volunteers will be required to complete a participation report, which will be submitted online via the portal.
The Chamonix Youth Hostel is accessible from Lyon, Marseille and Paris by bus or train. Meet late afternoon at the Chamonix bus station (a 20-minute walk from the hostel) or at the "Les Pelerins" train station (a 9-minute walk from the hostel). Train reservations can be made approximately 4 months before departure on the SNCF website, link below: https://www.sncf-connect.com/
Don't forget to bring work clothes and shoes resistant to dirt. In the mountains, despite the sunshine, the weather is surprising and can change rapidly. For leisure activities, you'll need to pack clothes suited to the climate (warm fleece or jumper, shorts and hiking trousers, windbreaker, down jacket, warm socks, etc.). For hiking, high-top, notched shoes are recommended. Don't forget sun protection (a hat or cap is essential, sunglasses with a high protection factor because of the intense reflection, sun cream with a high protection factor IP 30-50, etc.) and a swimming costume for swimming or white-water activities. For your accommodation, remember to bring a towel and a pair of flip-flops for when you move around the youth hostel. You should also bring a backpack (in addition to your luggage) and comfortable trainers. You'll also need to pack the following essential accessories: a mobile phone charger, hiking poles (not compulsory, but recommended), a water bottle, a set of bandages and a headlamp or torch. Social events will be organised in collaboration with our coordinators and according to your wishes. In particular, we will be organising themed evenings for each country. If you would like to share a little of your culture (recipes, traditional stories, unusual objects, music, etc.), don't hesitate to take a little piece of your country/region in your backpack.

SEEDS volunteers will be mostly working on the hiking trails and walking paths in this beautiful mountanious area. The main tasks of the volunteers will be making and marking the walking trails on the different routes in the area. The work is physical and tools may include the sledge (sledgehammer) and crowbar. Well maintained paths enable people to visit these amazing areas without damaging them and this important work also helps to improve safety for visitors. Additional tasks may be cleaning or beautifying the surroundings, like hand-picking garbage or collecting trash blown by the wind or brought by some visitors. Some of the trails are located in an isolated area and the group may spend the day at the work site, therefore it will be needed to prepare packed lunches in the morning as we would return in the late afternoon back to the accommodation. The group may be split during the day to work in different locations. The working day normally runs from 09:00 to 17:00 with breaks for lunch and coffee; however, please be prepared for some flexibility due to the nature of Iceland s changeable weather. You can experience forestry work and relaxation in idyllic surroundings at this workcamp. You will live with 11 other young people from all over the world on the beautiful Noer youth campsite, which is located directly at the Baltic Sea. You will work at the Noer Castle, which is 1 km away, and will make the huge forest around the castle safe for traffic again by removing branches and undergrowth. You will also spend one day a week carrying out other small gardening and manual tasks.
The Society for Youth Facilities (Gesellschaft für Jugendeinrichtungen e.V.) has been running youth guesthouses on the North Sea and Baltic Sea since 1959. Under the brand "Leisure and Education by the Sea" (Freizeit und Bildung am Meer) the non-profit association pursues its educational mission in a very special way - because with the individually tailored programmes, young people and anyone else interested learn about the nature, culture and history of Schleswig-Holstein. The Noer youth campsite is located directly on the Baltic Sea beach and is mainly used by youth groups and for school trips. The Schloss Noer youth guesthouse is mainly used by choirs and orchestras, but also by families and youth groups. The ijgd has been organising volunteer service programmes since 1949. We are an independent, non-profit association for international youth work, a recognised independent youth welfare organisation, and one of the largest and oldest workcamp organisations in Germany. Each year, we assist around 5,000 young people into volunteer work in Germany and abroad. We give them the opportunity to be creative, act in solidarity, take responsibility for themselves, and discover their own true potential and strengths. Our principles: Ecological learning, voluntary contribution, self-organisation, social development, intercultural learning, gender equality, anti-racism/anti-discrimination and political education. Follow us on Instagram ijgd_workcamps Facebook @ijgd.workcamps

This camp allows volunteers to learn about global and local environmental issues through non-formal educational activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits, as well as to contribute directly to environmental protection by joining outdoor coastal cleanup tasks in the shores and beaches.
The Environmentally Aware & Trash Hunting project is part of a series of camps organised by SEEDS in cooperation with different partners. SEEDS works with and supports the Icelandic ministry for Environment and Natural Resources and the City of Reykjavík on a project to clean up the Icelandic coastline; the Blue Army, an organisation dedicated to the cause of coast cleaning; Whales of Iceland, an exhibition of life size models of whales and porpoises aiming at educating about their lives and human impact on their existence; SORPA, the organisation in charge of waste collection & management in the Reykjavík area and other local stakeholders.
This camp allows volunteers to learn about global and local environmental issues through non-formal activities such as workshops, discussions, presentations and visits, as well as to contribute directly to environment protection by joining outdoor cleanup tasks. These cleanup tasks may be arranged in partnership with the above mentioned organisations or organised solely by SEEDS. We aim to also involve the local community, so some of our events may be open to the public. We hope participants will learn how to plan and do their own trash hunting projects back at home. This project is based on similar activities around the world, where outstanding results have been achieved with volunteers. One of the two options below is also included in this camp as a hands-on volunteering activity day: 1. A day trip combining a visit to the Hellisheiði geothermal power plant, a trash hunt in the area; and the Hot River Hike, a hike up a valley filled with hot springs where one can bathe. 2. A day trip to the Reykjanes peninsula, combined with a coastal cleanup in the area. All the activities are dependent on conditions such as weather and availability of our partners. This camp combines learning, sharing, hands-on work and fun. No previous experience is needed. Volunteers should prepare to share environmental issues from their countries and be ready to spend time outdoors, walk medium distances during the cleanups, as during other activities and sightseeing. As a part of the project happens outdoors, volunteers should be ready to adapt and be flexible with the work and free-time schedule, as depending on the changeable weather, we may not be able to perform some of the activities (as) planned.
SEEDS Iceland was founded in 2005 as a non-governmental, non-profit volunteer organisation with international scope. Our main activities relate to the promotion of environmental protection and awareness, intercultural understanding and peace, through voluntary work on social, cultural and environmental projects in Iceland. We aim to empower, inform and expand the horizons of people of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds, to inform and share with them about the world in which we live and to take an active role in its future development. SEEDS provides opportunities to live, learn, understand and experience, while sharing and cooperating with others from different cultures and backgrounds.

The association for the renovation of Samuel JonssonEU? 1/2U? 1/2s art museum in Selardalur has been working on the restoration of SamuelEU? 1/2U? 1/2s statues and buildings for some years. SEEDS volunteers will be working hand in hand with a well known sculpture artist; who has dedicated several years to this project.
SEEDS Volunteers will be working for the ninth year helping and supporting the restoration of the artworks of Samuel Jonsson, an Icelandic folk artist, who lived in Selardalur. During his years of artistic production he produced unique concrete statues using sand from a local beach. Sadly, Jonsson passed away in 1969, leaving his creations without a caretaker. The land and the statues looked like they were simply going to be abandoned to nature in the out-of-the-way valley. However independent and government organisations have worked together with the support of SEEDS volunteers to preserve the site, which still remains for any visitors who would like to see the world through the eyes of an Icelandic farmer. This year, SEEDS volunteers will be mostly working on different walking paths and trails in the area, in Brautarholt/Samuel Jonsson Museum and Uppsalir/the house of Gisli O. Gislason, a museum in preparation.
This camp is located in Selardalur on the west side of Arnarfjordur, in the Westfjords, which are among the most breathtakingly beautiful places in Iceland, with its high mountains and dramatic fjords cutting deep into the landscape. The Lonely Planet put the area on its top 10 list of regions in the world to visit in 2011. Jonsson constructed at his farm in Selardalur a folk art environment that consists of a sculpture garden and two built structures: a chapel and a museum with his paintings and other small works. The story related with the chapel says that Jonsson had made an altarpiece, he wanted to donate to the local church, an offer that was rejected however. So to provide a place for the artwork, Jonsson constructed his own chapelSamuel Jonsson could first fully devote himself to creative activities after his retirement as a farmer and then he began building palaces and sculptures. Samuel built a grotesque but charming resemblance to the lion fountain in the Alhambra-palace in Granada, Spain, and sculptures of seals and other animals as figures from Icelandic history like Leif the lucky who found America. The distance from Reykjavik to Selardalur is about 500 km (8-9 hours drive) via the Whale Bay tunnel; it is perhaps one of IcelandEU? 1/2U? 1/2s most remote areas and a very peaceful and beautiful place to enjoy.
The volunteers will be hosted in a local house, in sleeping bag accommodation with mattresses on the floor. Please bring your own sleeping bag.Food supplies will be provided and a kitchen will be available, volunteers will share the different duties of cooking and cleaning. Remember to bring some traditional/typical food, drinks, recipes, music, games or movies from your country for the intercultural evening. Please be aware some items or ingredients may be expensive in Iceland and you will need to buy them yourselves or bring them from your country.
English will be the official language in the camp; high proficiency is not a requirement. Participation fee EUR 300 (Euros). The participation fee does not include the transportation from Reykjavik to the camp and back, which will cost EUR 75 one way or EUR 150 both ways.It may be very cold and/or rainy, so we recommend bringing warm and waterproof clothes (underlayers, overcoats, scarves, gloves and hats), good walking shoes, as some of the activities take place outdoors.Volunteers need to be prepared for physical work, to experience all kinds of weather and bring warm clothes as the project takes place outside and the weather can be cold. SEEDS and/or our hosting partner will organise free time activities in the area. This may include sightseeing, hiking, swimming in natural hot pots, etc.
Closest international Airport: Keflavik/Reykjavik (KEF). The tasks will be mowing andcollecting the grass. Additionally, the participants of the project will support the work on renovations on the Castle grounds. The hilly massive around Lohra Castle is listed as National Nature Reserve. Open Houses supports the Reserve since several years with volunteering activities. In a forest near the Castle the participants will remove trees and bushes which are not corresponding with the protection aims in order to clean the paths and make them enjoyable again. They will also will collect the wood remaining after maintenance works, load it on a truck, unload it at the castle and split and stack it for wintertime or for the fireplace. Besides that, the volunteers will continue the maintenance of the green area at the castle. In addition, in the later part of the summer, they will support the recollection, assortment, splitting and storage of wood to prepare the castle for the harsh winter months. PARTICIPATION TERMS Participants have to take part for the whole time of the project. The working part consists in six hours per day. Be informed, that during all projects the work will take place also on rainy and cold days and be prepared for that.
Open Houses – not empty buildings, but places with visible and invisible traces of history, places which have grown and decayed over the centuries, places which were shaped by those people who lived there long ago as well those who left only yesterday – places which will be shaped by those who live there or who come as a guest. Open Houses – rooms which want to be filled with dreams and ideas, with meetings and exchange, by people of different backgrounds, different cultures, different generations and different ideas and visions. The history of Open Houses Network dates back to the mid-1980s, when a group of young people started to restore village churches in East Germany in voluntary work to protect them from decay. The engagement for these buildings united people who enjoyed the freedom these activities provided and who filled these rooms with life again in ways which by far exceed the craftsmen's work done – through exhibitions, concerts, making music together or just sitting by the camp fire. Meanwhile, rooms free of political and ideological pressure are no longer urgently required; however, places have become rare where people can meet without commercial pressure, free of bureaucracy and institutionalism, free of nepotism and the exclusion which it produces. What should be easy – to go somewhere in order to meet people and to work together – has become difficult. The tightrope walk between, on the one hand, public activities in a monetary and functional sense, and the retreat into private life on the other, is very difficult, and it requires a lot of power and permanent efforts to tackle red tape and financial restrictions. Free spaces are less and less understood as common property, and are permanently being cut back. The idea of public property seems to have gone out of fashion, and places of common responsible work have become rare. Open Houses Network tries to create and protect such spaces. In this process, we do not want to be the doers, but be people who have a vision, who want to initiate something, but who also are aware of depending on the co-operation of others. We understand our projects and events as offers – as offers to create space for commitment, for changes, for meetings.
LOCATION: Next towns: Bleicherode (6 km), Nordhausen (20 km), Erfurt (75 km) Region: Thuringia Lohra Castle is situated in the heart of Germany in Northern Thuringia. The castle, which is surrounded by a scenic hilly landscape, is located on the edge of a natural reserve area. Being one of the largest castles in Thuringia, the history of castle Lohra begins in the Middle Ages. Its architectural styles which have been preserved in the structures of the ensemble attest to a prolonged period of occupation and historical evolution up until today. The castle is more than thousand years old, and it is a relic of German medieval past that is still standing at the heart of a region through which the story of the German nation has been written. Today, it includes twenty buildings from different time periods, showcasing this historical evolution to the enchantment of visitors and heritage enthusiasts: medieval fortifications, remnants of a tower from the 11th century, a Romanesque double-floored chapel, a manor house from the Renaissance period as well as stables and granaries from the 19th and the early 20th centuries. The ensemble is situated in the centre of a beautiful forest. LEISURE TIME The camp places are mostly situated in small villages in rural areas, so the participants should not expect busy places and normal city activities for the leisure time during the working days. Small trips in walking distance are possible in the afternoon. On the weekends it is possible to organise an excursion to nearby cities or to have other leisure activities.
ACCOMMODATION: shared rooms with 2 – 5 beds in 3 guest houses, warm shower (limited hot water), 1 camp kitchen (cold water), coal-burning stoves FOOD: The meals will be prepared together as they are part of the community life, what means that every participant will be responsible for the meal at least once during its stay. So, it would be very nice if the participants could bring typical recipes from home in order to introduce each other to the preparation of food from all over the world.
WHAT TO BRING Usually, average temperatures in Germany during the summer time are about 20o C to 30o C; during the night it will get colder. It is possible that there may be two weeks of non-stop sunshine, but every day rain is not impossible either. In September and October, it's about 8o C to 18o C. Passport Insurance Certificates (EU-members should bring their European Health Insurance Card; those which have an individual travel insurance should bring the certificate) sleeping bag stable work boots, really appropriate for practical work appropriate clothes, waterproof coat mosquito protection lotion dictionary typical recipes, sweets, music, instruments and games from the participants' home country for group activities
TERMINAL: Next bus station: Großlohra, Friedrichslohra/Wartehalle Next railway stations: Gebra/Hainleite (5 km), Wolkramshausen (12 km). Next airports: Leipzig/Halle (LEJ, 155 km), Frankfurt/Main (FRA, 280 km), Berlin (BER, 300 km)
Open Houses does not provide internet access or phone at the sites. So, it will be not possible for the participants to check emails or to make phone calls from the project place. The next public phones are at most of the places far away and there are no internet cafes nearby. In the case that participants will need access to internet or phone they should prepare themselves in advance. Furthermore, washing machines are not available at the camp places.
