ijgd celebrates 75 years of international workcamps and together with the State Forest of Lower Saxony we are celebrating 75 years of cooperation. Of course we will also celebrate with you! For more than 30 years, our work camp groups have been supporting the Lautenthal forestry district in maintenance measures and ecological tasks in the forest areas in the Upper Harz. As large, contiguous forest areas, they are important for climate protection. You will help with nature conservation and environmental protection work and, through your efforts, contribute to preserving habitats for (rare) plants and animals and to restoring the balance in nature. The care of young deciduous trees, the nature-oriented design of waters, the repair of benches, shelters and hiking signs, but also the construction of hunting facilities, are among the tasks of your group. You will work in changing small groups and get an insight into the ecological, economic and social tasks of a forestry office.

The work will take place at Oosterhouw in Leens (province Groningen). It is a beautiful monumental manor house surrounded by a garden divided into four different styles. Many parts of these gardens have been neglected over the past decades. Volunteers will be cleaning up and helping restore the gardens to their former glory. Activities range from groundwork like digging and levelling to gardening such as weeding and pruning to wood shredding and splitting. The volunteers will work in the gardens five days a week. This excludes the weekends.
The mansion Oosterhouw in Leens is located in the north of the Netherlands in the province of Groningen. The estate is surrounded by a flat agricultural landscape approximately 10 km from the Wadden Sea UNESCO heritage. Oosterhouw was built in 1868. The last time the building was renovated was in 1912-1913. After that, there weren’t any significant developments. The former owners of the mansion were C.o Jellema and Klaas Noordhuis. Co. Jellema is a semi-known poet in the Netherlands, and his current library is still in the house. Klaas Noordhuis was a garden architect and has added essential aspects to the garden. The current owners bought the house a few years ago and want to open the house more to the public. The house, the garden and the surrounding landscape are unique in this area and must be protected and taken care of.
You will have leisure time after work (work ends at 4 p.m.). The Oosterhouw area mainly consists of small villages with Leens as the main village. You will have bikes at your disposal to explore the surrounding area. During the weekend you can enjoy your free time. There are plenty of nice places to visit, for example the beautiful and vibrant city of Groningen or take a ferry boat and visit the island of Schiermonnikoog.
During the two weeks, the volunteers will be staying at Wongema. It’s a working café located in the small village of Hornhuizen. The whole group will be staying in the residential barn besides the main building. There’s a dorm where everybody will be staying. Clean towels will be provided. Sheets for the beds won’t be provided. (Make sure you bring a sleeping bag or your own sheets!) Downstairs is a kitchen which we can use. Bicycles will be provided for transportation between the accommodation and the gardens of Oosterhouw. The bike ride from and to the accommodation is approximately 15 minutes. You will cook together in teams, taking turns and having the opportunity to cook meals from your home countries. You have a kitchen at your disposal. Self-organisation is also a vital point during your daily camp routines. Cooking and cleaning are planned and done independently within the group. Each participant is expected to take part in the CCC (cooking-cleaning-crew)

Come and take part in the renovation of the picturesque streets in a city of vultures in Provence! A small village of Rougon is situated in the heart of the Verdon Gorge, just next to Point Sublime, a vantage point where you can spot vultures hovering over the river canyon. The village has 56 habitants — and this number rises to as many as 150 in the summer period. The commune of Rougon is planning to continue renovating the village with a third volunteer youth work camp. The aim is to lay out a stone road linking the village to the start of a GR trail (« Grande Randonnée »). Many of the stones will have to be cut before they are laid, and plaster will be prepared on site. This project doesn't require any specific skills, but it is technically very complex and requires a lot of physical effort. You'll learn about stone, the work of a stonemason and the conditions of the trade!
We have collaborated with the lovely district of Rougon three years now and its dwellers are impatient to host us again! We want you to discover this lovely district and the culture of its inhabitants.
Rougon is situated in the heart of the Verdon Gorges. The Verdon is one of the most beautiful rivers of France, famous for its emerald colour, which is a result of a reaction between the fluorine and microalgaes. The water is particularly pristine, fresh and abundant in fish. Named one of the most remarkable places of Europe, the Great Verdon Canyon is a place attracting many tourists every year. Rougon, a fort dating back to 814, is located below vestiges of its mediaeval castle. In Rougon, you may spot griffon vultures, first introduced to Verdon between 1999 and 2004, black vultures, introduced in 2005 and white scavenger vultures which dwell in Verdon Gorge since 2007. The leisure activities will be mostly nature-oriented: hikes and swims in the river. Festivities of the Rougon village are planned for the last weekend of July, at the end of the project and all volunteers are going to be invited for the anchoïade and aioli contest which involves degustating local specialities prepared by the locals themselves and to an evening convert with live music played by a DJ.
You'll be staying in a field in the centre of the village of Rougon. Accommodation will be in tents, with access to public toilets; we will be installing solar-powered showers. For communal living, the group will set up shaded areas with large tents and/or tarpaulins. Don't forget to bring your sleeping bag (very important!!). The meal budget will be managed by the staff. You will share the various collective tasks. You'll help with the shopping and prepare the meals together, giving priority to local seasonal produce. As the site is surrounded by nature, the telephone and internet networks in the area around the village are fairly limited. However, there is a network throughout the village of Rougon. The French volunteers will be able to share their Internet connection through a hotspot.
This project is supported by the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) program for young people between 18 and 30. It is open to all volunteers that fit the ESC criteria. The participation to ESC volunteering teams is subjected to several principles and conditions, presented on the ESC webpage: https://europa.eu/youth/solidarity/mission_en - volunteers do not have to pay any fee (neither sending, nor participation fee) to attend the project and will receive financial support for their travel, according to a maximum amount established depending on their travel distance and upon the presentation of original tickets; - volunteers need to enrol in the PASS, the ESC Portal; then Concordia France will organise their matching, on the online system, with the volunteering project; - volunteers will receive pocket money, calculated on the basis of 6€/day, once they arrive at the project in France; - volunteers will have to complete a participation report, submitted online through the portal.
The meeting point is set at Les ARCS DRAGUIGNAN train station, at 5:00 PM CET on the 13rd of July. The village is some distance away from the meeting point and since there is no public transport, it is imperative to be present punctually at the meeting point! From PARIS, departure from the Gare de Lyon (train station). The journey by train to the ARCS DRAGUIGNAN lasts about 4 to 5 hours, make sure that you have enough time to have a stress free trip. Train reservations can be made about 4 months before departure on the SNCF website, link below: https://www.sncf-connect.com Whenever possible, use low-carbon transportation (train or bus, rather than airplane) for a responsible and sustainable international work site.
Remember to take clothing adjusted to work and hiking conditions. If you have safety shoes, take them with you, they are strongly recommended. Nights might be cool, take a good sleeping bag, a sleeping mat or an airbed. In order to avoid mosquito bites, take an anti-mosquito spray and loose fitting and covering clothing for the evenings. Days might be very hot, so take a cap or a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a small backpack and water bottles. On the last day (29/07), the departure time is usually set in the morning. For the open days and shared meals, you may take some easily transportable local specialities to share with others.

The Märkische Schweiz Nature Park 40 km east of Berlin offers a unique natural and cultural landscape as well as the backdrop for our project in and around the "Drei Eichen" environmental education centre. By cooperating with the nature park administration, we will not only get to know the nature park and its surroundings, but also actively help to shape it. We are offering this work camp because it is fun to have young people from all over the world with us and because we simply need many hands for some of the work! People and pets live on the grounds of the Drei Eichen environmental education centre - and there are almost always lots of guests: children, families, seminar groups. At the moment, we also want to reintroduce wild honey bees, which originally lived in caves in old trees, to our nature park. To do this, we are building hollows in tree trunks. You help us with this. You will learn about the types of beehives and how the bees are observed and cared for. This ancient art of beekeeping is called Zeidlerei. For activities in between, Drei Eichen with its grounds offers many opportunities to learn about plants and animals, nature conservation and alternative ways of life and to actively participate. On some days, you will "give something back" to Drei Eichen by helping out on the farm - because sometimes we need many hands: e.g. for wood protection paint on the playground, repair work, clearing the small pond of plant debris and cleaning up the garden. At various locations in the Märkische Schweiz Nature Park, we will spend a few days helping to carry out various landscape conservation tasks in different natural areas. The aim is to protect or promote either dry or wet sites, their soil and the native plants that grow there. Historically, these sites were created and maintained through a lot of manual labour - seasonal mowing and grazing by sheep and goats. Today, we help with this. There are many lakes that invite you to take a refreshing dip after work! All work, whether in landscape conservation, manual labour or creative design, takes place outdoors. We plan together on site, depending on the current weather conditions, on which days we do which work and which days we take off.

For activities in between, Drei Eichen with its terrain offers many opportunities to learn about plants and animals, nature conservation and alternative ways of life and to actively participate. There are many great options for spending your free time. Among them are GPS tour(s) in the nature park, guided hikes on biodiversity, a visit to the bat museum, trips to surrounding lakes, going to the movies, visiting the pub "lokal." in Buckow, making a campfire; going to an artificial climbing forest or doing a canoe tour in the area. Those who long for more urban hustle and bustle on the weekend can also take a day trip to Berlin or even go to Poland, which is not that far away. We plan together on site, depending on the current weather conditions, among other things, on which days we do what work and on which days we take off.
You will stay at the Drei Eichen environmental education centre, located in the middle of the forest, 4km from Buckow (www.dreichen.de). As a group, you will have a flat with kitchen, bathroom, toilet, lounge-kitchen, large balcony and 3 simple multi-bed rooms. We can also provide tents on request. You cook together. Money for shopping will be provided. Vegetarian or vegan meals are possible. Please indicate any intolerances when registering.
It helps if you have an interest in physical work and some strength. Please bring weatherproof work clothes/long sleeves and pants, the work takes place outdoors. Mosquito repellent, sunscreen are also essential. Shoes that can withstand water are good - outdoor sandals or similar.
On site in Drei Eichen or bus stop Buckow "Markt". From there we organize a shuttle, probably at 1 pm, 3 pm and 5 pm. The conservation of the heritage railway and its steam trains requires proper maintenance. Foreseen activities are conservation of the nature and green environment along the railway trajectory, cleaning and painting railway bridges and maintenance of historic railway stations.
The Zuid-Limburgse Stoomtrein Maatschappij (South Limburg Steam Train Company) or ZLSM is a heritage railway operating from its main station of Simpelveld to Schin op Geul and Kerkrade in the south of the Netherlands. It also runs across the border from Simpelveld to Aachen-Vetschau and has an extensive collection of stock. The construction of the original Miljoenenlijn, as a part of the total railway trajectory in the south of Limburg, started in 1925 and was carried out by the Spoorwegbouwbedrijf from Utrecht, a subsidiary of the NS. Construction was difficult and expensive. For example, there is a constant threat of subsidence due to mining. To keep the height differences as small as possible, a lot of earth is moved in the hilly area. While the railway embankment in the Anselerbeek valley in Kerkrade will be raised 32 meters, the railway line between Kerkrade and Simpelveld will be 18 meters below ground level - so as not to have to rise and fall too much. To this day, the Miljoenenlijn is a railway monument of great cultural-historical value that still appeals to the imagination. For old and young! Everyone is always amazed.
Several options for leisure time: - Evening traveling by steam train, - Tribute to Fleedwood Mac, music festival (July 20th, 2024, Brunsum), - visit to summer market, - visit a very good restored castle Hoensbroek, - visit marl caves in Valkenburg, - disco party end fest at scouting area.
