Rois is part of the Sar region, in the south of the province of A Coruña. Its cultural heritage is influenced in its historical-artistic component by its proximity to Santiago de Compostela and has exponents of the Baroque in its religious architecture (both in the churches and in the cruceiros of its parishes) and in its civil architecture with the Pazo do Faramello (early 18th century) where one of the first paper mills was located. It was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in December 2009. It is easily accessible and remains of the walls can be seen. The Jacobean legend places in this castro the residence of the Raiña Lupa (a character from Galician mythology who appears in the Codex Calixtinus, in which it is told how once the remains of the apostle Santiago arrived at Iria Flavia, they were deposited in the property of a lady named Lupa). The Grup d'EsPlai Vidrerenc (GEPV) is a youth organization in the village of Vidreres of a recreational and non-profit nature, which organizes all kinds of activities based on the pillars of education in leisure. It is a group open to everyone, with the aim of contributing to the development of children and young people, helping them to realize themselves as people, so that they are part of the society that surrounds them in a way active and creative, while giving them tools to grow and train from and to wherever they want. So, we are an organization that, on a voluntary basis, carries out leisure activities for children and young people between the ages of 3 and 17 during the winter, which include fun afternoons, camps, the Children's Park Christmas, chocolates... In addition, we have been developing a campaign in the summer that includes the following activities: - Casal-Casalet: from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the months of July and August, with dining and reception services for families who need it. - Casal Jove: teenagers aged 14 to 17 enjoy an active, safe home with various activities. - Work camp: two shifts of two weeks each and of different types: a Catalan volunteer camp with young people between the ages of 14 and 17 and an international volunteer camp with young people between the ages of 18 and 29 years.
The work camp, like the other activities organized by the GEPV, takes place at Escola Salvador Espriu. During the summer, the school adapts in order to carry out all the activities. The main place for coexistence is the school gymnasium, with the showers and toilets nearby; each participant will have a mattress to sleep on and shelves to store belongings. Meals are taken in the school canteen, prepared by a cook and taking into account the needs specific to each participant. Right in front of the educational center we find the swimming pool, which we use daily, and the town center is a 10-minute walk away. And the place where the work will take place is Castell de Sant Iscle, a castle from Vidreres located on the outskirts of the town. During the camp, leisure activities are developed with coherence aiming to achieve group cohesion among participants and fulfill the camp's objectives. Some activities, as examples of our work, may include: - Ice-breaking games. - Scavenger hunt to get to know the town of Vidreres and its people. - Catalan culture workshop: traditional dances and games. - Mask-making workshop. - Catalan bowling matches. - Excursion to Caulès hermitage, the Llobet swamps, Montseny, Sils lakes and Girona - Stargazing. - Orienteering race. - Non-contact sports night. - Fun outdoor dinner. - Movie night. - Group dynamics.
The work camp, like the other activities organized by the GEPV, takes place at Escola Salvador Espriu. During the summer, the school adapts in order to carry out all the activities. It is located on the outskirts of the village, with a lot of green areas nearby. All participants will be living in the same space (the school gymnasium) and the room will be shared with no gender separation: the sleeping area will be equipped with mattresses and wardrobes for all participants, but it is necessary to bring a sleeping bag and a pillow. For personal hygiene, volunteers will use the school's changing rooms, which are equipped with showers and sinks, and the changing rooms are going to be divided by girls/boys. : It's important to bring clothing suitable for high temperatures. With the sun shining bright, lightweight and breathable fabrics are key to staying comfortable throughout the day. It's also wise to pack a few layers just in case the weather turns slightly chilly, especially during the evenings or early mornings. All the meals provided will be prepared by an external chef and the food is going to be prepared in the school kitchen. Adjacent to the kitchen space is the dining hall, where meals are typically served. If anyone has any dietary restrictions or is vegetarian, the organization will accommodate volunteer needs. There are going to be breaks for snacks.
The accommodation space is adapted for individuals with physical disabilities, but the archaeological work is not. Regarding intellectual disabilities, we are prepared to receive them. The camp activities are NOT accessible for people with reduced mobility because participants must be capable profiles to follow the archaeological work conditions, which is the core of the work camp.
Participants are invited to join the work camp on Sunday, August 11, 2024. The meeting point will be at Salvador Espriu School of Vidreres, starting at 5 p.m. However, if any participant arrives at the Sils train station, a village 5 minutes away from Vidreres, we offer our van service to pick them up also from 5 p.m. Therefore, we ask participants to send an email to grupesplaividrerenc@gmail.com as soon as they know how they will arrive or which option best fits their schedule. The participants will work on the area of an external camp of the former women´s concentration camp Ravensbrück. The women had to work there under very extreme conditions in an armament’s factory. First steps will be taken to build a memorial on the area where the former prisoners were accommodated. The volunteers are supposed to bring some ideas about the future of the memorial.
This project is organized by NiG e.V., a german non-profit and non-government organization. In this project we work together with the town Malchow.
Malchow is a small city in the southern part of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. What once started as a village on the island of the Malchower lake, later became a town with about 6600 inhabitants and an important health resort between two great lakes and within the Malchower lake. But in between those times the town Malchow was mainly known for two things: The first thing was a manufactory for ammuniation in Malchow that was a company established during the times of the regime of the Nazis. Half of the manufactory workers were forced labourers from abroad. The second thing was an external labour camp of the Ravensbrück concentration camp for women that was built in 1943. Hundreds of women, most of them Hungarian jews, had to work under inhumane conditions. A lot of them died. Leisure time: Excursions (swimming, short trips) can be planned.
The volunteers will stay in a hostel. Full board is included (also vegetarian).
Please bring a sleeping bag, a mattress pad, working clothes and motivation.
