Globalisation and social movements
Lunaria's work on globalisation crosses over the different fields of its activities. Migrations, economic alternatives, ethical finance, and international volunteering are heavily influenced by globalisation in its different forms. The dominant model, i.e. the neo-liberalist one, which denies rights, produces armed conflicts, multiplies financial speculative activities, cannot be ours. Peace, rights and global environmental protection should be the axis along which globalisation evolves. We all know that this is not the case. It is for this reason that, since its foundation, Lunaria has been dealing with globalisation and has been networking with movements opposing the neo-liberalist model of globalisation. We support these ideas carrying out research, preparing publications, and the building networks; particular attention is given to the analysis of composition and evolution of global movements. As with our other activities, the most important aspect for us is the circulation and distribution of informative material. It is for this reason that, besides carrying out research, we organize seminars, publish books and other documents. We have taken part in the Genoa G8 and worked with "Tavolo migranti", ARCI, ICS and other European organisations to set the Florence Social Forum up. We have been co-operating for years with the "Table of Peace" to organize the Assembly of the Peoples’ UN every two years, and with the international network "Social Watch", which publishes a yearly report on the quality of human development in 60 countries in the world. Throughout the years we have published and contributed to several publications: Maps of Social Movements, a work exploring the evolution of global movements up to the Genoa dramatic climax (written by Pianta, Agnoletto, Della Porta, Allegretti); Gatsopoli, a short guide on the GATT agreement and the WTO. This guide was published during the This World is not for sale campaign, which in Italy did the preparatory work to the Cancun WTO summit, together with Attac, Roba dell’Altro Mondo, Altreconomia, Mosaico di Pace. Our most important research project at the moment is called Globi. For this project we have administered a questionnaire to organizations which participated in the Florence Social Forum and we have processed and analyesed the results in Globalizers from below, a report which is also available in English in our document archive.
